Joey Gatewood has enough QB ability to not write him off. It will be between him and Nix next year.

With the 4 game redshirt rule now in place, we'll see Gatewood play this year. And just like Cam, these reporters can't tell what he's all about in practice. Remember Cam was even with Neil Caudle in practice. But then, he took off the orange no contact jersey, and it wasn't close.

Rob's Rankings: Surprising verbal commits in 2019 cycle (Rivals)
quote:

4. OWEN PAPPOE TO AUBURN

WHY IT SURPRISED: The way Georgia head coach Kirby Smart is recruiting as of late, it’s a mild upset whenever he loses an in-state star like Pappoe, who ranks 26th overall in the 2019 class. When the four-star linebacker picked Auburn, it was a massive victory for the Tigers and a blow to Georgia fans, which planned on landing him for the better part of a year. Auburn’s ability to defeat a program coming off of a College Football Playoff appearance and national recruiting title shouldn’t be undersold, as Gus Malzahn and company now seem to be building a mountain of momentum of their own.

CHANCES IT STICKS: The outlook remains positive for Auburn. According to Pappoe, his recruitment is over. He wasn’t shy about his intentions to shut things down during a brief interview at the Ray Lewis Linebacker Academy a few weeks back and has stuck to his word thus far. That could change in the fall, however, as things in the recruiting world have a way of finding chaos down the stretch.

3* OG Kamaar Bell told KN he has a top 2 of AU/BAMA & will take OVs to those schools. Isn't sure who else will get visits. AU apparently texts him daily & he is hoping to make it to the recruiting event on July 28th. Most of his conversations are with Chip Lindsey so he's hoping to start building a closer relationship with JB Grimes. Said Grimes is kind of old ( ) but is energy level is high and likes fact he's a teacher. Hasn't decided a commit date but could come in middle of senior year or sooner

Pretty sure Bama is his favorite but they won't have room. I'm guessing AU is probably not gonna land William Putnam so they are turning the heat up on Bell. Looking likely AU take 5 OL this class as I gotta think they will try & take one more tackle

Still not sure what numbers are gonna be in this class. With Oladele not making it in, I imagine they really want 5 DL (counting Buck) in this class & they seem to be aiming for 5 OL as well. That probably means there won't be a spot for Pritchett/Otey unless we miss on Booth or we only take 2 true LBs in this class

Also LSU lost that other MS commit they got that same day with Handy (Ed O loves those emotional commits) but his decommit message was amazing

I seriously can't help but go read the OM 247 board these days just because of how freaking insane their recruiting reporter Yancy Porter is.... He posted this yesterday in response to Jamond Gordon tweeting out a photo of himself in AU gear
quote:

Not sure if this was a past or current visit from Jamond Gordon to Auburn?

Yes obviously AU is sneaking Gordon on campus during dead period & taking pics to be posted publicly

He also thought Handy was a major OM lean thanks in large part because Handy had tweeted "HOTTY TODDY" a few days before his commit

The MS schools have some terrible writers. The MSST 247 guys say "we" with everything so you know they are unbias

The RB recruiting issue has been discussed at nauseum. Yes do OK but we are not getting the elite RB recruits. Fact. Last yr we had no replacement for Kerryon and it hurt us down the stretch. Loss to UGA and UCF. Fact.

Ive been saying that for a few years. Paw and I have discussed it fully

We always seem to have plenty of projects but overall, we have had no good depth at RB which has hurt us numerous times.

Its still my position of concern along with O line

Not sure its going to matter though, dont think we will see the offense tooled like 2013-2014 anytime soon anyway

It won't work if we did...

Defenses figured that offense out, how it was constructed. You started seeing a lot more safety/nickel/star guys setting the edge and taking away the QB keep on the zone read and the DL would just crash on the RB. In some cases they even had the blitzer off the edge AND let the DE read the QB so 2 guys were on Marshall.

That version of the offense will never work again. You have to be able to throw the ball effectively to make the defense pay for using the edge guys in that manner. I think the current offense with Chip Lindsey could be maneuvered to a more running QBs strengths, but I don't think you can scrap the RPOs anymore with a zone read offense.

So according to the sane OM 247 recruiting reporter, he thinks both AU & LSU are gonna become bigger factors for 5* LB Nakobe Dean moving forward.

I need to see that kid actually make it to campus before I believe

Yeah our backup just happened to be a POS who got injured and then was either suspended for the year or wasn't let back on the team (Pettway). Not exactly a recruiting issue there. We HAD a fantastic duo going into the season and likely would've split the load more if both were healthy.

Let us not also forget Jovon Robinson who would have been on the roster last year if not for being a arrogant headcase.

You need more than 2 RBs on the roster. How many 4* and 5* RBs does thUGA and Bama have on their rosters right now? Definitely more than 2.

KN put up an insider this morning. Here's summary

- Was not surprised by 4* RB Noah Cain talking up LSU with Wiltfong on Monday. AU views LSU as the top threat. However, LSU has to show something on the field next season & that might prove tough with Miami, AU, OM & UF on their schedule in the first 6 weeks. Apparently AU coaches have told some other backs they hope to know Cain's decision by early October. KN is very high on AU's current RB situation so doesn't think it's a huge deal if AU were to miss on Cain or Antony-Richards

- KN guesses AU will land 5-6 more commits before start of the season. Believes AU lands 4* OG Keiondre Jones, 4* WR Jalen Curry, 4* Buck Derick Hall & 3* DE Colby Wooden. Not ready to make a final pick on 5* CB Andrew Booth because believes it truly is a 50/50 battle. Says other 2 names to watch are 3* CB Nehemiah Pritchett & 3* OG Kamaar Bell. Tigers really like Pritchett but do they have room? Bell is high on AU/BAMA & it could come down to who recruits him harder. With Putnam trending FSU, AU might turn heat up on Bell

- Hall's commitment won't come in July, it will probably happen in August. Mom really wants him to take visits elsewhere on final week of July to be 100% sure before committing. Expected to visit UF & FSU that week. AU still leads MSST

- KN doesn't see Oladele not making it to a campus a huge blow to AU. The bigger one would be Coynis Miller but both his coach & him are confident he will make the grades on remaining classes he needs to enroll

- Don't sleep on MIA being a threat for 5* WR Jadon Haselwood. KN says hearing they are a bigger factor than most realize

- A current player at Hewitt-Trussville told KN that Ja'Varrius Johnson is the best WR on their team which includes one of the top 2020 players & Bama commit Dazalin Worsham. KN expects Johnson to rise in the rankings after a big time senior year

So for fun of it let's say AU gets Jones, Curry, Hall, Wooden & Booth this summer. That would give AU a class score of 261.50 good for #3 right now in the class rankings. That's also almost the same score AU had total in last year's class yet AU would still have 6-7 spots left as well

Booth is the crucial piece to a possible top 5. Pull him & we got a real shot

Auburn has:

4* Joiner
4* Asa
4* Barrett
3* Whitlow
3/4* Malik Miller
3* Shivers

We're in better shape than just about any team in the SEC NOT named Bama/UGA. When you lose your bellcow RBs, you have to find a new one. We will. We always do.

FWIW I don't think our issue was talent on the roster but instead Gus's stubbornness to not trust anyone other than KJ

No way to really know either way. We will find out pretty quickly this year if our RB recruiting has actually been poor or not recently. I got a feeling we will be just fine running the ball
