National Signing Day by position: Top WR classes (Rivals)

With National Signing Day in the books, it’s time for us to take a look back and see which schools came out with the best overall hauls at each individual position group. Today we examine the wide receivers.

9. AUBURN
Signed: Anthony Schwartz (5.9), Matthew Hill (5.9), Seth Williams (5.8), Shedrick Jackson (5.7)
The Tigers wanted to add speed at the wide receiver position and they did exactly that with this impressive haul. Schwartz is one of the fastest high school athletes in the country, regardless of sport, and could be incredibly fun to watch in the Tigers' offense. Hill, ranked as an athlete, made tons of highlight-reel worthy plays in high school, while Williams and Jackson are both bigger receivers capable of playing on the outside.
Not sure how they rank Bama's class ahead of ours but whatever...

Auburn makes a strong first impression on Mingo (Rivals)
Woodson doing work
quote:
Marcus Woodson was hired by Auburn early in January and he was on the road checking on prospects in his areas leading up to National Signing Day.
The new Auburn coach spent some time in Mississippi and one prospect that caught his eye was Jonathan Mingo. After seeing the 6-foot-1, 195 pound wide receiver out of Brandon (Miss.) workout one day, the junior was invited to Auburn for their Junior Day February 3.
Before he left that day to head back home, Auburn offered.
"Coach Woodson send me a direct message on Twitter the day after he saw me working out and invited me to Auburn," said Mingo. "At the end of the visit, coach Woodson talked to me about how he likes my film and how he likes how I move, then he offered me."
This was Mingo's fourth offer and he did not see if coming.
"I was definitely surprised by the offer. I know coach Woodson liked me because he was sending me messages right after he saw me. I just did not expect the offer the first time I had visited Auburn."
Memphis, Ole Miss and Mississippi State have also offered Mingo. On his first visit to Auburn, he saw the football facilities, Jordan-Hare Stadium, the dorms and he learned about the academics there.
The Tigers left a strong first impression.
"The overall hospitality there was great. I really liked the people there and the facilities were nice too. I liked seeing how they push their players academically too.
"I like Auburn a lot. They are one of the top football schools in the nation, so getting the offer and seeing what it is like there has them high on my list."
Mingo was as far as saying Auburn is in his top two with Ole Miss, a school he plans to visit this weekend.

My bad, for some reason I saw Marietta and thought of Roswell.

Yea they have had a lot of success there for sure.
Unrelated but why does it seem like WRs are the only position that love us? I mean I'm glad to get what we can but of all the positions to come to AU WR makes the least sense but it seems like most of our early 2019 stuff is on WRs when we just signed 4 good ones.

Cuz Kodi is a badass recruiter now
Actually it's a good question & I am not sure the answer. I know for 2019 kids quite a few have mentioned Bo Nix as a reason they are looking hard at AU. Also it appears these guys think our offense would be fun to play in. Whatever it is about our pitch seems to be selling real well with WRs right now
Now if we can figure out how to do that for OL we will be doing really well...

Alabama CB commit Brandon Turnage who called Auburn dream school ‘interested’ and ‘considering’ Tigers (SECCountry)
AU offered January 8th FYI which is only 5 days after Marcus Woodson was hired
quote:
Alabama CB commit ‘considering’ Auburn
Brandon Turnage waited a long time to visit Auburn — his whole life, in fact.
The 4-star Alabama commit from Oxford, Miss., has been interested in the Tigers for a long time. He goes so far as to label himself as a fan, which comes along with the obligatory commentary about idolizing Cam Newton. Turnage, despite his Alabama commitment, made his way to Auburn earlier this month for a visit.
And, again, despite his Alabama commitment, Turnage is adamant Auburn has a real chance to eventually grab his signature.
“You know, I grew up an Auburn fan. It’s always been my dream to visit,” Turnage said. “I’m interested. I’m considering them, I’d have to say.”
Here’s an anecdote to help you further understand Turnage’s interest.
On Feb. 10, 2017 — yes, a full year ago — Turnage messaged back and forth with me asking the smart questions about the recruiting process. What are the best ways to get noticed? How do you go about visits? And the important one for the purposes of this conversation: What would it take to receive an Auburn offer? After all, it was his “dream school,” he said at the time.
At the time of that exchange, Turnage held offers from Ole Miss, Mississippi State, LSU, Louisville and UAB. He has since been offered by anyone and everyone, including Auburn, Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan and Tennessee.
He committed to the Crimson Tide on Dec. 22, but as evidenced by the Auburn trip, Turnage is keeping his options open.
If there’s a school that can flip Turnage, there’s a clear front-runner.
“Probably Auburn,” he said. “With the coaching staff, you can tell there’s a bond, a family.”
Turnage, dating back to the conversation last February, wanted to make an early commitment. The Crimson Tide reaped the benefits of that. Now the onus will be on Auburn and others to keep recruiting someone already committed to the reigning national champions.
The Tigers have shot.
Auburn is recruiting Turnage, listed as a wide receiver, at cornerback. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound recruit ranks as the No. 100 overall prospect in the nation in the 247Sports composite ratings. He spent most of his time on his visit with defensive backs coach Marcus Woodson.
Auburn has made it clear it wants Turnage. During the contact period, Woodson stopped by his high school three times — once per week — which sends a clear signal.
“It means they actually want me to come play for them. They’re giving me an opportunity to make an impact,” Turnage said.
Turnage plans to return for another Auburn visit in the spring, he said.

One more official visit for Calvin Anderson
Auburn won’t be the last official visit for Calvin Anderson, after all.
The Rice grad-transfer tackle hinted in interviews with SEC Country (and other outlets) that he might shut down the visits after his Auburn trip. Even following the visit last Sunday, Anderson said he still wasn’t sure whether or not he’d take another visit, whether it be Texas A&M, who recently offered, or others.
As it turns out, Anderson will take one more official visit this weekend — to Oklahoma.
Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley has been involved in this recruitment since the beginning, so it’s not a major surprise to see the Sooners pick up an official visit. Anderson has already been to Texas, Michigan and Auburn, and as Anderson put it, this will be the final official visit before he makes his decision.
Some might view the decision to add another visit as a negative for Auburn, that he wouldn’t need to take another visit if the Tigers impressed him enough. I view it differently. Coming into last week, Texas and Michigan sat in a group of their own, with the Longhorns as the clear favorite.
The fact Anderson is considering a visit to another non-Texas school should add to the belief Anderson isn’t tied to staying in Texas — and that he’s still open to considering other schools. Texas may not have been as obvious of a front-runner as many have believed.
One cause for concern: Oklahoma will likely have an NFL first-round tackle this year in Orlando Brown. Of the schools Anderson had considered before, assuming he’s truly making a football-only decision, Auburn seemed to be the right smart choice for NFL draft enhancement.
Oklahoma might provide the biggest threat to that given the Sooners’ recent success.

Another Jackson-Olin offer to come?
Auburn has built a pipeline of sorts at Jackson-Olin High School in Birmingham, Ala.
In the 2017 class, the Tigers snagged all-purpose linebacker TD Moultry who has turned into the future of the Buck position. In 2018, they beat out Alabama for 4-star defensive tackle Coynis Miller. Auburn has also already offered 2019 linebacker Vonta Bentley and 2020 linebacker Quandarrius Robinson.
Could another Jackson-Olin offer come soon?
Auburn is still evaluating 2019 linebacker Jammal Abrams. Abrams stands 6-3 and weighs 224 pounds. He already holds offers from Florida, Louisville, Oregon, South Carolina and Ole Miss. Auburn and Alabama will host him on visits this spring. He already attended the Tigers’ junior day.
According to Abrams, he thinks a visit is possible.
“They said they’ll probably offer me around February,” Abrams said. “It’s a dream school I’ve always wanted to play for. I just love it.”
Abrams has an unofficial visit schedule set up in February.
He will attend Tennessee this upcoming weekend. Abrams will go to Florida — an early favorite to land him — on Feb. 24. The fact the Gators offered early is “pretty helpful,” Abrams said.

Auburn Recruiting Question of the Day: Will Tigers emphasize tight end in 2019? (SECCountry)
quote:
There’s no doubt about it, Kristofer.
Auburn hasn’t landed a 4-star-or-better tight end target since Landon Rice in the 2016 class. The Tigers have taken their shots at a few prospects in 2017 and 2018 — Jeremy Patton, Tre’ McKitty, Kedrick James, Luke Ford, Brevin Jordan and Dominick Wood-Anderson. Their results for those efforts? Sal Cannella, who is more of a receiver than tight end, and John Samuel Shenker, who took a redshirt for the 2017 season.
Everyone I’ve spoken with inside the Auburn program thinks Shenker has a chance to surprise a lot of people this season. In fact, his development made Auburn much more comfortable with passing on a prospect such as Matt Alaimo and focus on the position group more in the 2019 class.
But it’s a must to focus on it in the 2019 class. So much so I could see Auburn taking more than one tight end this cycle.
Here are the seven prospects Auburn has offered already, in order by ranking:
Hudson Henry, Little Rock, Ark.
Keon Zipperer, Lakeland, Fla.
Austin Stogner, Plano, Texas (Oklahoma commit)
Ryland Goede, Acworth, Ga. (Georgia commit)
Luke Deal, Greenwood, S.C.
Jackson Lowe, Cartersville, Ga.
Garmon Randolph, Jefferson, Ga.
I’ll give a quick rundown on each of those prospects, though many more details will emerge with them in the weeks and months to come.
Henry is the brother of standout Arkansas tight end Hunter Henry. He has now picked up offers from, well, you name it. Auburn’s best chance with Henry: Gus Malzahn’s connection to the state of Arkansas. Henry wouldn’t be the first Tigers’ player from Pulaski Academy (see: Will Hastings).
Zipperer seems like a long shot with the three in-state schools all in contention, but crazier things have happened.
Stogner and Goede both visited Auburn before making their college decisions, but they look solid with the Sooners and Bulldogs.
Deal and Lowe have been offered by the Tigers in the last two weeks, which probably gives an indication of where Auburn believes it stands with the aforementioned prospects. Auburn offered Deal and Lowe on back-to-back days on Jan. 28 and Jan. 29. In Lowe’s case, Clemson is believed to be the favorite because of his high school connection to quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
Randolph holds an Auburn offer and has familiarity with the program and campus. He camped with the Tigers last summer and returned for junior day earlier this month. Randolph is a head-turner. He’s the kind of prospect who walks through the door and makes everyone say, “Wow, who’s that?” At 6-foot-6 and 220 pounds — with the length he has — it happens regularly.
But I wouldn’t expect Auburn to stop with those tight ends. The Tigers know they have to hit on one, perhaps two, in the class. They’ll need to cast a wider net than normal to be safe.
The names that jump out immediately: Sean Brown from Rome, Ga., and Jamin Graham from Attalla, Ala.
Both prospects attended Auburn’s junior day. If I were to guess, Brown is much closer to picking up an offer from the Tigers, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see it happen early in spring evaluations.

Anthony Schwartz, Shaun Shivers bring sprinter speed to Auburn’s 2018 signing class (OANow)
quote:
Shaun Shivers and Anthony Schwartz went to school just 15 miles apart in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., but they only saw each other once on the football field during their high school careers.
It was Sept. 22 of this past season. Shivers rushed for 129 yards, but it wasn’t enough to lift Chaminade-Madonna Prep over American Heritage High, which got 103 receiving yards and two touchdowns from Schwartz.
That wasn’t the only time they competed against one another, though. They’ve been going head-to-head on the track in the 100- and 200-meter sprints for years. And next year, they’ll get to do it wearing the same jersey.
Shivers signed with Auburn as a three-star running back in December. Schwartz, a four-star wide receiver, joined him in the 2018 recruiting class on Feb. 7. They both plan to run track at Auburn, which should tell you plenty about how much speed they might be able to bring to the football field.
The 5-foot-7, 175-pound Shivers finished second at the Florida Class 2A State Championships in both the 100 and 200 last year, running the former in 10.78 seconds and the latter in 21.57 seconds.
Shivers lost both those races to Tyson Campbell, Schwartz’ teammate at American Heritage and a five-star corner who signed with Georgia last week. Schwartz finished eighth in both events.
But no one would argue the 6-foot, 180-pound wide receiver is that much slower than Shivers. In fact, he might be the fastest Class of 2018 recruit in the nation: Four weeks after those eighth-place finishes, Schwartz set a new youth record with a time of 10.15 seconds in the 100 at the Pepsi Florida Relays.
“He’s the fastest guy in the country,” Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn said of Schwartz. “He’s also going to run track for our track team. I’m very excited about that, but he’s a football player.”
Schwartz had opportunities to go to college on track-only scholarships, and had he decided to go that route, he likely would have been among the best in the nation. But Schwartz realized during a senior season where he caught 25 passes for 507 yards and seven touchdowns for the state-champion Patriots that he didn’t want his football career to end.
The Tigers are giving him an opportunity to do both. Plans are already in the works for him and Shivers, Schwartz said when he took an official visit to the Plains on Jan. 14.
Should it all work out, they’ll be among the few during the Malzahn era to play both sports. But they’re far from the only former track & field standouts on Auburn’s football roster. Twenty-four returning scholarship players are listed as having done either sprints, jumps or throws in high school, as are nine signees in the 2018 class.
Wide receiver Darius Slayton was a state champion in the 200, and running back JaTarvious Whitlow owns eight state medals between the long jump, triple jump, 200 and 400. Wide receiver Noah Igbinoghene is the reigning Alabama state champion in both the long and triple jump and started competing for Auburn’s track team this past week, finishing 10th in the long job at the Tiger Paw Invitational in Clemson, S.C.
"It was great to get Noah out there," head coach Ralph Spry said. "We wanted to get him a couple of jumps and ease him in. He competed well, especially considering he has had no training to this point."
As for Shivers and Schwartz, Auburn has plans for how to use their considerable speed on the football field, too. The diminutive Shivers, who Malzahn likened to Onterio McCalebb, said the coaching staff told him they plan to use him in the slot as well as on kick and punt returns.
“Just get the ball in space and let me do what I do,” said Shivers, who rushed for 2,241 yards and 27 touchdowns as a senior.
Schwartz said Auburn sees him playing in the same slot role currently occupied by Eli Stove and Ryan Davis, as well being a deep threat with his straight-line speed.
“I really believe this guy has a chance to really be special,” Malzahn said, “just from the standpoint that he got better and better throughout his high school career and he’s got that drive to make him special.”
And if those two are ever on the football field together like they have been on the track, both say look out.
“I can’t wait, because nobody is going to stop us when me and Schwartz are on the field at the same time,” Shivers said. “That’s just too much speed.”
Added Schwartz: “It’s just not going to be fair.”

Jason Caldwell had update on 4* LB Donte Starks who visited recently for Junior Day. Starks said he really liked the family vibe & had a nice long chat with Deshaun Davis on what it's like to be at AU. T-WILL also showed him depth chart & how AU has 3 senior LBs this year. Says AU is in his top 2 with LSU but admits that's mainly because they are only 2 schools he's visited so far. Will check out Bama & MSST this spring as well. Also admits that LSU will be tough to beat due to location & his mom wanting him to stay close to home. He's visited LSU a bunch
Would be shocked if he didn't sign with LSU. That would be a huge miss for O

247 has update on 3* DT Patrick Lucas who AU recently offered. Grew up a Bama fan but was excited for AU offer & says fandom won't play a role in his recruitment. Garner & Steele both told him they love his film & think he's a great fit. Hasn't gotten much interest form Bama yet. But team after him hardest right now is Tennessee. Pruitt & Rocker talk to him weekly & he is gonna visit this weekend. Also looking hard at Florida, Mississippi State & UAB
