Recently committed quarterback James Foster explains de-commitment, outlines programs involved (SECCountry)
quote:

Back on the market, James Foster refreshes recruitment

It wasn’t one specific moment that led to James Foster’s de-commitment.

The 3-star quarterback from Lanier High in Montgomery, Ala., stepped off his Missouri commitment last week. It came on the heels of an offer from LSU — and a visit from LSU recruiting coordinator Tommie Robinson — but, according to Foster, it was something likely to happen regardless as several top programs continue to coax Foster to visit their campuses.

“I kinda backed off my decision because I wanted to take visits to other schools. I knew I didn’t want to put their school out there like that and make it seem like I’m taking visits to other schools when I’m committed to them,” Foster told SEC Country. “I was already, in my head, thinking about de-committing. I was already talking to my mom. That LSU offer maybe opened it up a little bit more and made me go ahead and re-open my recruitment, but I was going to do it regardless.”

There are many who will enter the chase for Foster.

Baylor, Florida State, LSU, Auburn, Alabama, Indiana, Illinois and Memphis are programs Foster said he hears from already. Of that group, he holds quarterback offers from all but Florida State, Alabama and Auburn. Alabama has offered him as an athlete, but Foster’s only interested in playing quarterback. Missouri remains a factor and will most likely receive one of Foster’s official visits.

He picked up his LSU offer last week just prior to his de-commitment. Florida State communicates with him regularly, and Foster said the coaching staff plans to be at his game this Friday when Lanier plays Prattville. Don’t be surprised to see a Florida State offer soon.

Because of that level of prioritization, Foster said it’s LSU and Florida State that have emerged as the front-runners right now based on communication by the staff and his interest in the respective universities.

As for Auburn, Foster is playing a waiting game.

“I talk to Auburn a little, too. I talk to coach [Chip] Lindsey. He’s just still not sure if they’re going to take two quarterbacks or not,” Foster said. “He said he was going to let me know. I’m probably the next guy up if they’re going to take two quarterbacks, so we’ll see.”

Foster is willing to be patient. He just recently backed off his Missouri pledge, so he’s not in a rush to jump on board somewhere else. His visit plan is set up for the next two weeks. He’ll be at Alabama this weekend for the LSU game. Foster will travel to Baton Rouge the following week for a visit to LSU. After that, Foster hopes to be at Auburn for the Iron Bowl, but some of that will be dependent on the message he receives from Lindsey about Auburn’s quarterback plan.

This isn’t a situation where Auburn needs to rush a decision, but the Tigers also shouldn’t linger if they decide a second quarterback is the plan. Foster has a strong familiarity with the program and he didn’t hold back from admitting the Auburn offer would be a big one for his recruitment going forward.

“It would make a big difference, honestly, because it’s right down the street, 45 minutes. I can see myself playing there,” Foster said. “I visited there a lot around my ninth- and 10th-grade years, so I know a lot about it.”

Down-the-line Auburn DT target leaning to Louisville

Alfred Thomas is starting to narrow down his list of favorites. The 4-star defensive tackle put out a top 8 in April, which he’s amended some. It’s now a battle between Louisville, Georgia Tech, South Carolina and Troy, but Louisville finds itself at the top of the list for now based on some heart-to-heart conversations he’s had with defensive line coach L.D. Scott.

“Louisville is at the top,” Thomas told SEC Country. “I talk to coach every day. He’s a real good coach. He put some things out there that put into my mind that I could probably go there and have a chance to start my first year, so that’s what I feel.”

The 6-foot-2, 260-pound defensive lineman is someone who probably fits in as a hybrid lineman — start at end and develop into a tackle — but he’d be willing to play anywhere. Thomas has been a regular visitor of Auburn in the past. He visited for a junior day at the beginning of the season and made his hopes for an offer from the Tigers well-known, while also putting Auburn atop his list.

Thomas hasn’t heard a ton from Auburn this year, but he does communicate with linebackers coach Travis Williams from time to time. The Tigers are starting to shore up their defensive tackle spot with Daquan Newkirk and Coynis Miller already committed and Andres Fox potentially on deck. But if the Tigers were to miss on Fox, they may need to find a secondary option in a somewhat weak defensive line class.

Thomas is someone who looks like he’s made major developments to his body and athleticism throughout 2017. Even though Louisville is the team to beat right now, Auburn remains one of only two teams that could work its way into the picture.

“Auburn and Alabama. That’s about it,” Thomas said. “I talk to them a little bit but not much. No offer yet, but we’ll see. But Louisville is at the top right now.”

Thomas will begin taking visits in December and hopes to have a decision before the new year. If Thomas makes any trips to the Plains, it’ll be telling.

Always liked Thomas but we seem to be in decent spot with some other guys that we aren't gonna take em

Linebacker target to watch for Auburn

I spoke with Foster and Thomas after their high school practice earlier this week. They play on the same high school team as 3-star linebacker La’Dedric Jackson, who has visited Auburn at least twice this recruiting cycle. Jackson sat out practice the day I was there to rest a bone contusion, so I wasn’t able to speak with him directly, as I was with Foster and Thomas.

With that said, I spoke with a few of Jackson’s coaches who think Jackson — who also recently de-committed from Missouri — could become a legitimate linebacker target for Auburn.

Jackson doesn’t hold an Auburn offer yet, but the linebacker position, beyond the hopes of flipping Quay Walker, remains somewhat of a mystery. I’ve been told in the past that Jackson was someone to watch for an offer if things didn’t work out with Walker, and that appears to be the sentiment at Lanier High School with Jackson.

I hope to learn more about this specific recruitment when I get the chance to talk to Jackson face to face, but it’s certainly a recruitment to track down the stretch.

Like who? DL depth has been the one positive the last 2-3 years. Hate to turn away a potentially talented one from right down the road.

Daquan Newkrik & Coynis Miller are already committed and both are expected to play DT

Mixed signals on where we stand with Andres Fox but we are at least in top 2 & many think he will grow into a DT. Then there's Oladele as SDE & Jibunor at the Buck. If we miss on Fox (like Wolk says) then maybe we make a late run at Thomas. Considering his best offer is Louisville right now he's a good backup option to have

Auburn recruiting mailbag: Florida effect, 2 quarterbacks and the offensive line (SECCountry)
quote:

After a week away, the SEC Country Auburn recruiting mailbag is back in full force.

With a lot happening across the Southeastern Conference, the silly season of college football is already upon us, which is likely to have a major effect on the recruiting landscape.

Here are your questions, and here are my answers.

Brandon Hamer (Facebook): Do we get Anthony Schwartz now?

I wrote a longer piece earlier in the week about the effect of Jim McElwain’s departure from Florida. It helps in some ways. It could hurt in others.

A lot of this depends on who Florida hires and the type of players that coaching staff hopes to add.

In Schwartz’s case, I think it could go either way.

For starters, the 4-star wide receiver from Plantation, Fla., said he’s down to two schools — Auburn and Florida — but the track pull of Houston also has that program in the mix. Florida has always been the school Schwartz is most connected to, but with a coaching change, it might give you reason to believe this skyrockets Auburn’s chances of landing him.

That may be the case — if Florida’s new staff looks at taller types of receivers.

But, in some ways, the coaching change could increase Schwartz’s chances of ending up in Gainesville. Before McElwain’s departure, Florida had five wide receivers committed, which was a big reason why Schwartz delayed his decision-making process.

Corey Gammage posted a de-committment tweet, but deleted it. At the very least, he’s thinking about it. Jacob Copeland has been linked to a possible Alabama flip for more than a month now. This will only make that noise louder. Ja’Marr Chase will take visits to multiple places and has been on de-commitment watch for some time.

If any or all of thsoe prosects make a move, Schwartz might be the next-man up. He’s always wanted to play for Florida, and that might be tough for Auburn to overcome, even with his relationship with wide receivers coach Kodi Burns.

Lynn Lowery (Facebook): Are we done at the quarterback position?

My gut says no, but it’s possible.

I expect Auburn will end up taking two quarterbacks, but I’m not sure yet who that second quarterback will be. A.J. Curry continues to receive mail and edits from Auburn and is waiting on Chip Lindsey to go see him play. He said Lindsey told him Auburn will take a second quarterback. James Foster has heard Auburn is deciding whether or not to take a second quarterback.

Those are the two guys I’d keep an eye on right now. It’s offer watch time more than anything.

Ryan Pearcy (Facebook): Other than Quindarious Monday, any other big time defensive backs that would be a possibility for Auburn?

Quindarous Monday is the highest-rated defensive back for Auburn, but all four committed are impressive. Jamien Sherwood is one of the best all-around athletes in the southeast. Kolbi Fuqua is somewhat of an unknown who Auburn’s staff loves. Josh Marsh has a chance to be the state of Alabama’s all-time leading tackler.

But will there be any others added to the conversation? A lot of that is likely dependent on the momentum Auburn grabs with late-season games against No. 1 Georgia and No. 2 Alabama. A win or two would certainly pique the interest of some of the nation’s top talent.

At cornerback, the highest-ranked prospect Auburn is in the mix for is Christian Tutt, a 4-star from Georgia. Nebraska is the team to beat, but Auburn will work to get him on campus for one of the last two SEC games.

Steve Kensaul (Facebook): Who is the recruit you think Auburn needs to get the most?

Among the guys already committed, it’s Quindarious Monday.

Auburn had a major need at safety coming into the recruiting cycle. The Tigers figured that out early with four safeties, but Monday was the key. Stealing him away from Clemson was the highlight of Auburn’s recruiting cycle up to this point.

Going forward, there’s no question Trey Hill is the recruit Auburn needs the most. The Tigers have a need at offensive guard coming up, and Hill might be the best uncommitted prospect in the nation at that. It’ll be an Auburn-Georgia battle for Hill down the stretch, and that’s one the Tigers need to find a way to win.

As mentioned above, Trey Hill is priority No. 1. But Auburn would like to add two more, at least.

Here are the names to look at: Badara Traore, Tank Jenkins, Dylan Wonnum and Jalen Goss. More could emerge, but those are the key four behind Hill right now.

Traore is a JUCO offensive tackle who officially visited over the summer. Texas and LSU are the teams to watch out for going forward. Jenkins has been a tough one to read, but he made his way into my most recent recruiting class projection. Wonnum is an Auburn-South Carolina fight until the end. Goss hasn’t been mentioned much, but he camped with the Tigers over the summer and picked up an offer. He’s someone to watch if Auburn were to miss on a few.

Don’t be surprised to see the target pool grow if Hill chooses Georgia.

Montgomery-area teammates Tank Jenkins, Cam Taylor have strong interest in Auburn, but official visits will dictate decision (SECCountry)
quote:

Tank Jenkins breaks down interest in Auburn, others

There have been several times during his recruitment that Tank Jenkins felt ready to commit.

Over the summer, during a visit to Auburn, he thought it might happen. But he hesitated and needed to wait. A few times throughout this football season, Auburn, Louisville and Oklahoma have been on Jenkins’ mind enough to consider a commitment. Still, he waited.

Within the last week even, the commitment process has crossed Jenkins’ mind.

“I just told myself two days ago I was getting ready to commit,” Jenkins said. “Then, it was a lot of things happening with coaches and stuff that I don’t really know which way I’m going to go. It don’t really matter with coaches right now. It just matters what school is in my heart. It’s going to end up winding down. It’s been winding down, but things change. My mind’s racing. It’s crazy.”

The coaching change Jenkins referenced was Florida. It’s a school he’s still in communication with and will have a chance for one of his five official visits. But the rapid nature of that coaching switch served a bigger-picture purpose. It proved to Jenkins the business nature of these decisions and how careful he must be about choosing a university of choice rather than a coaching staff of choice.

The schools still heavily involved for the 6-foot-3, 320-pound offensive lineman are Auburn, Louisville, Oklahoma, Missouri, Florida and Ole Miss. Ultimately, Jenkins said it will be “whatever is in my heart” that pushes him toward one program.

As recently as Tuesday, Auburn coaches were on the phone with Jenkins trying to make that pitch.

“Auburn, they always tell me they love me. Coach [Herb] Hand and coach [Gus] Malzahn, I talked to both of them just yesterday,” Jenkins said. “They just told me they want to make me an Auburn Tiger. They keep telling me they want me to be a part of this great home.”

This one appears like it’ll come down to Jenkins’ official visits, which will likely all take place in December.

Jenkins originally planned an Oklahoma official visit for the TCU game on Nov. 12, but Park Crossing’s state-title run will step in the way of that plan. He also considered taking his Auburn official visit for the Iron Bowl, but after conversation with mentors and coaches, he thinks it would be better to take that in December after the season as well.

Auburn, Oklahoma, Louisville and Missouri are the four programs Jenkins knows will receive official visits. Florida and Ole Miss are the likely candidates for the fifth one.

Jenkins’ experiences on those trips will dictate his decision, which very likely could come in December.

“It’s just how the feeling is when I get to those schools. If I feel awesome, if I feel it in my heart, then I’ll just go,” Jenkins said. “See, I know at Auburn, I know it feels great at Auburn, just have different feelings at different schools. My officials will probably make a different type of feeling for all of them.”

Cam Taylor talks de-commitment, Auburn’s plan

Cam Taylor made a decision last week that wasn’t easy. He de-committed from Missouri, which he said was due to “several different factors that built up over time.” It wasn’t his preference — to commit and de-commit — but he knew it was something he needed to do in order to close out his recruiting process the proper way.

He hasn’t eliminated Missouri, by any means, and his bond with the staff hasn’t been hindered.

“The city itself [Columbia, Mo.] and coaches-wise, everything is still fine with that,” Taylor said. “I’m still on good terms. We haven’t lost connection or anything like that. They’ll still be a top school in my recruiting, but I wanted to settle things down right now, so I could take some visits.”

The 3-star athlete had been out of football for a while because of some unfortunate recurring injuries early in his career.

But coaches have started to take notice this fall. The 6-foot, 205-pound athlete has served as the Park Crossing (Ala.) quarterback this season. He’s helped his high school squad to the No. 2 ranking in Class 6A. Western Kentucky and Indiana have entertained the idea of deploying Taylor as a college quarterback, and while Taylor admits he’s “starting to like this quarterback thing,” he sees himself as a defensive back or wide receiver in college.

Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia and Notre Dame have been top-tier programs that have communicated with Taylor some throughout the fall. He’s visited Auburn and Alabama. All of those programs have shown interest in him on the defensive side of the ball.

In Auburn’s case, Taylor speaks primarily with defensive coordinator Kevin Steele, who talked to Taylor about a potential position fit that would fill a major area of need for the Tigers’ 2018 class.

“He actually told me cornerback,” Taylor said. “I like it. I can get physical on the line with receivers. He just knows what he saw on film from me being at camp that he really likes me. He knows that I can play cornerback.”

Taylor has maintained a close relationship with Steele throughout the whole process. He’s always felt an offer would come, but Steele has always told him to remain patient. It’s undeniable the Auburn interest — and potential offer — played a part in his Missouri de-commitment.

Even though an offer hasn’t come yet, Taylor remains confident it will.

“I talk to Coach Steele a lot, still. He wants me to come up there next weekend to come to the game. I really think they will offer, but he just said it’s going to take a little bit of time right now,” Taylor said. “They’re going to see how things play out.”

Many programs have projected Taylor as a safety. With four guys committed at the position, that would likely mean some class attrition for Taylor to fit in at safety. Still, he camped with the Tigers this past summer as a cornerback, which is a position Auburn has had trouble figuring out this recruiting cycle.

Taylor will be at Alabama this weekend for the LSU game. He’ll visit Auburn the following weekend for the Georgia game. After that, he hopes to receive a little more clarity on each team’s plan with their defensive back recruiting.

It’s likely a National Signing Day decision for Taylor, who will rely heavily on his official visits, which are likely to take place in December and January.

“I’ve got to take all my visits, all my officials. I don’t have them set yet, but I’ll take visits to all the schools I feel like I fit,” Taylor said.

Interesting we are looking at him at CB now. All these Montgomery kids (Foster, Thomas, Jenkins, Jackson, Taylor & Hawkins) would jump on board if we pushed hard but all are kind of middle of the road prospects. Taylor's an impressive athlete though when he's healthy

Andres Fox makes interesting statement about Auburn’s recruiting effort compared to others (SECCountry)
quote:

Andres Fox makes interesting comment about Auburn

Let’s clear up some of the confusion around Andres Fox’s recruitment.

The 3-star defensive lineman from Mobile Christian (Ala.) made an interesting claim when he left the Auburn-Ole Miss game. He accepted the term silent commitment to describe his recruitment. Fox didn’t want to reveal that school of choice, or really dive deep into that side of the conversation, but he wanted it out there that he knew where he was leaning.

Earlier this week, Fox stepped off that slightly, but still gave SEC Country the impression he knows what school he’s most likely to end up attending.

“I know where I want to go. It’s probably them and one more school. That’s probably it,” Fox said. “I’m not like silently committed to them, but I told them that I’m going to come. I haven’t told them that I am committed. Just to go ahead and get me one [of those spots]. So I know where I want to go. Not necessarily save my spot. Time is running out, so I need to pick one and have a backup.”

That doesn’t eliminate the confusion, of course.

Several questions linger about the school of choice. What’s clear, however, is Fox feels confident in his decision — whatever decision that may be. You may ask, “Why wait?” but that has to do with Fox’s dream to have a National Signing Day hat ceremony. It may be a formality at that time, but it’s always a memory Fox has wanted.

Officially, it’s down to Auburn, Alabama, LSU and Stanford. Here’s how Fox describes the two that have a chance.

“They’re just a great place to come in [looking at] the depth chart and the roster. They’re both a great place to play,” Fox said.

He added two important pieces to the decision-making process. Fox said he’s pretty confident in his No. 1 choice and said he’s “been working with them for a long time now.” He also indicated it’s “probably where I’m needed the most.”

You can make strong arguments for all of the programs regarding the needed-for-most category. Alabama is as thin as it’s been at the position. LSU and Stanford have both indicated Fox could come in and start Day 1. Auburn will has depth issues when the contingent of Marlon Davidson, Derrick Brown, Nick Coe and others bolt for the NFL a year down the line.

But when it comes to the time frame Fox has been “working with them,” no one comes close to Auburn. Kevin Steele and Rodney Garner have laid out a plan for Fox from the beginning, which started in December before most of the other programs began regular communication.

Strangely, however, as Fox described his contact with the schools involved, he said Auburn had backed off a little.

“They kind of have backed up a little bit [in recruiting effort]. It’s probably Alabama at the top now [recruiting the hardest]. Alabama and Stanford. Auburn is probably the lowest now,” Fox said. “They haven’t been talking to me much. I don’t know. They text me every once in a while, but it’s weird. It’ll just be like a one text thing. Coach Garner said he’s coming to my game tomorrow, so I think it’ll pick back up with them. … They’ve already made their message to me. They’ve been recruiting me for like a year. They just want me to come in and play and be like Marlon Davidson.”

Before Auburn fans hit the panic button, my confidence that Fox ultimately picks Auburn hasn’t wavered. The Tigers want Fox, and my sources have indicated they still feel like they’re in a good spot to land Fox when he turns his decision public. But it’s certainly not a guarantee.

Alabama, as my colleague Chris Kirschner has written about, also has a sense of confidence with Fox who grew up in a Crimson Tide household. According to Fox, Alabama is recruiting him the hardest right now, so that indicates the desperation the Crimson Tide feel after missing on Coynis Miller and Bobby Brown to other SEC programs.

Fox knows he has official visits set in December to Alabama and LSU after the SEC Championship game. He’ll go to Stanford in January most likely. Fox knows he’ll take an official visit to Auburn, but he doesn’t have a timeframe on that set yet.

KN also put up an insider this afternoon

- Auburn really likes where they are sitting with 4* WR Anthony Schwartz & if NSD were today, think they would sign him. However, still a ways to go & who UF hires will play a big role. If new coaching staff wants him & some WRs flip could open up opportunity for Gators. Also if Schwartz decides to focus only on track then Houston might be an option. Bottom line is AU is a major factor & has a great shot at landing him. Will be on campus for the Iron Bowl

- KN thinks 3* DE Andres Fox's comments about AU not recruiting him as hard is a smokescreen. He's a top priority for the staff & AU had 2 coaches at his game Thursday. He's also expected to visit for both the UGA & BAMA games plus an official visit. He wants to announce on NSD. Looks to be turning into an AU/BAMA battle with both sides liking where they stand

- 4* OG Trey Hill is turning into an AU/UGA battle. He will visit again for the UGA game & could come back for Iron Bowl. AU has had him on campus a bunch which gives them some confidence but recognize the Dawgs are a major threat

- JUCO Jamir Johnson has emerged as an OL target. No offer yet but AU has started evaluating him. He would have 3 years to play 3. Don't be shocked if he lands an offer in the near future

- AU is in a good spot with 3* DE Kayode Oladele. He's expected on campus for an unofficial visit for the Iron Bowl then on an official visit the weekend following

- AU not concerned with 3* S Jamien Sherwood taking visits. He's an EE & they expect he signs in Decemver

- There's a very good chance 4* CB Christian Tutt visits for the AU/UGA game. AU has been working hard on him & has made up some ground. NEB is thought to be the leader.

- 3* LB Braelen Oliver is another backup option at LB for AU. He's currently committed to Minnesota but has had an impressive senior seasons & is on AU's radar. AU was at his last game but communication is still limited

- KN isn't naming names but is hinting AU might be targeting another highly rated QB for the December signing period. Says looks like AU is probably gonna take a 2nd QB & hearing it might not be a project prospect like initially expected. Says a new name will probably emerge in the coming weeks
