His coach rotated three players last year. Gatewood is the sole starter for this year. Last year, Gatewood was the most athletic and versatile player, and played wildcat, receiver, TE, KR, and QB. When a person is that athletic all over the field, it's easy to move him around and let a decent pocket passer with scholarship offers himself get the most throws as QB. It benefits the team because Gatewood's ability and the pocket passer can both be on the field at the same time.

It sucks for Gatewood's QB development sure. But it shouldn't be a knock that he played other positions.

If you have an SEC caliber kid to play QB at your high school, you rotate three kids at said QB spot because:

A. Coach is retarded
B. SEC caliber kid isn't really SEC caliber
C. SEC caliber kid is retarded

ETA: Is this Keihl Fraiser prat 2?

Not sure where you are getting this from. No reports have said Gatewood struggles with any of this

His high school played 3 QBs last year. Jordan Smith who signed with Gardner Webb, 3* Riley Smith who has a few D1 offers already and Gatewood. Notice the first 2 guys are pro style guys. Gatewood is the best athlete of the bunch so they played him basically everywhere. This year it will be more of a 2 QB system between him and Riley Smith.

I get people having doubts on Gatewood especially with recent QB struggles. Personally I wish we could get someone a little more polished and sign Gatewood as an ATH. However, there's no doubt that if he does develop he has a chance to be an absolute stud in our system. Hopefully he gets more work at QB this year and shows out

I think coach is trying to keep everybody happy. He had 3 guys with chance to play college football at QB spot so tried to get them all reps. You can see by Gatewood's offer list that we aren't the only ones that think he can be a player one day

4-star lineman Alfred Thomas doing 'whatever it takes to be at Auburn' (AL.com)
quote:

Fifteen college football programs have extended scholarship offers to Alfred Thomas, but there's at least one he's school he's still holding out hope for.

The defensive lineman at Sidney Lanier in Montgomery said it would "mean a lot" if Auburn offered.

"I've been wanting this offer since the ninth grade and it'd be great if I could get it," Thomas said earlier this month after his visit to Auburn for Junior Day. "They told me to come to a camp and come to A-Day again and see how it pans out."

The 6-foot-2, 260-pounder has been to the Plains several times and was initially recruited by former defensive coordinator Will Muschamp. He has since been building a relationship with Muschamp's replacement, Kevin Steele. Thomas also saw some of Auburn's first spring practice in pads during his trip.

"They said they want to stop the run and be the top in defense," Thomas said. "You can't be top without a defensive line.

"I think (Steele's) a good coach. I want him to be my coach because he's real cool."

Thomas is currently ranked as a four-star prospect and the nation's No. 24 defensive tackle by the 247Sports Composite. He is versatile enough to play on the inside or outside, though that will depend on how much his body changes by this time next year.

"I might have to lose weight to play end," he said. "Whatever it takes to be at Auburn."

"They're the top. They've been the top for a long time. I love Auburn."

Thomas plans on returning to Auburn this spring. As the Tigers determine whether they want to offer him, an SEC rival has been making strides for his commitment. Thomas says Georgia is recruiting him harder than any school right now.

"Georgia's been standing out," he said. "I talk to them momentarily sometimes. I'm going to start forming a relationship with them."

Thomas also holds offers from Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Mississippi State, Missouri, North Carolina, Ole Miss and Tennessee, among others.

Auburn signed three defensive linemen in the 2017 recruiting cycle -- end Markaviest Bryant and tackles Tyrone Truesdell and Alec Jackson. The Tigers currently have one defensive linemen committed to the 2018 class -- Daquan Newkirk of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

Highlights

I say sign him as a SDE. Interesting that both him and Timaje Porter might not be takes yet for AU. Hopefully we aren't being too picky waiting on other guys like Fehoko, Miller and D'Andre Litaker

St. Paul's 2018 QB Swift Lyle garnering offers, interest from multiple colleges (AL.com)
quote:

St. Paul's coach Steve Mask isn't shy in his praise for rising senior quarterback Swift Lyle.

"He's one of the best quarterbacks in the state by far," Mask said Monday. "I'm glad we have him for another year."

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Lyle, who helped the Saints to a 9-4 record and the Class 5A quarterfinals a year ago, has received a lot of college attention this offseason.

Last week alone, he was offered by Central Arkansas, Akron and Louisiana-Lafayette. Mask also said Louisiana Tech, Troy, South Alabama, Auburn and Alabama have shown "a lot of interest" in Lyle lately.

"I think Swift is a Power Five quarterback," Mask said. "There are areas he needs to work on. He needs to work on his strength and develop his upper body a little more. Sometimes, that is difficult when you play multiple sports. What I know is that Swift is a really good athlete, and he has that 'it' quality. I think the sky is the limit for him."

In his first year as a starter in 2016, Lyle showed signs of brilliant play. He completed 169-of-304 passes for 2,151 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also struggled at times. He was intercepted 17 times, but more than half of those (eight) came in losses to St. Stanislaus and UMS-Wright.

"There were some inconsistencies, but I also think we didn't do a good job of helping him at times and putting him in the best position to make plays," Mask said. "The biggest thing for Swift is being consistent. He had several great games in a row and then he would have a not-so-great game. That is to be expected from a first-year starter. He'll get to the point where he doesn't worry so much about thinking. He'll just go out and play. When that happens, he has a chance to have a great year."

Since the fifth grade, Lyle has been working with private coach David Morris, who owns QB Country - a year-around quarterback training and development company. Morris said he still considers Lyle a young quarterback since he had to bide his time behind three-year starter Miller Moseley. However, Morris said Lyle's talent is without question.

"Swift is very athletic," Morris said. "Obviously, he is a big kid so that is kind of a box these bigger schools can check off right away. He's got a live arm, and he's a competitor. When college coaches turn on his film, he is a really intriguing prospect because he makes big-time plays. He is as talented as any quarterback in this class for sure."

Morris said spring football practice and the summer camp circuit will be important in his development and recruitment.

Lyle is one of at least six St. Paul's rising seniors expected to sign to play college football next February. The other are athlete Daniel Beard, offensive lineman Will Eiland, tight end/H-back Oliver Willman, kicker Wilson Beaverstock and cornerback Jalyn Armour-Davis.

Auburn, LSU sit in prime position for Mobile-area DT Timaje Porter (SECCountry)
quote:

First 2018 DL commit upcoming?

Unlike last cycle, expect the defensive line to be a centerpiece of the 2018 recruiting class.

Auburn ended up taking three defensive linemen in the 2017 class, but all three came post-Christmas and two of them committed on National Signing Day. The Tigers likely will take more D-linemen and take them earlier this time around.

The first one who could drop: 3-star defensive tackle Timaje Porter from Theodore, Ala. Porter officially set his commitment date for March 24, which will take place via a hat ceremony at Theodore High School.

He’s down to two schools — Auburn and LSU.

Porter visited Auburn most recently on March 4 and hinted a decision was looming. Porter said LSU and Florida likely would receive visits before he made his announcement.

Florida won’t. LSU will.

Porter returns to Death Valley on March 18, the weekend before his commitment ceremony.

What does he need to learn to be certain about his pick?

“There’s nothing more at Auburn. … I just need to see how my LSU visit goes,” Porter said.

Porter is most familiar with Auburn.

He has visited the Plains five times in the past year, which includes trips for games, practices and junior day events. Porter said defensive line coach Rodney Garner is the coach he’s closest with in the recruiting process.

Plus, Auburn’s rich stable of Mobile-area players on the roster gives Porter more of an at-home vibe.

“You can just tell that, if I come here, that’s what I’d have — a brotherhood,” Porter said. “They know what I come through and what I’ve been through as a whole if we were to play together. … Me wanting them and them wanting me is a good thing to have right now.”

The 6-foot-2, 320-pound Porter is ranked the No. 31 defensive tackle in the nation.

Auburn offers Big 12 commit

Larry Porter is busy.

Here’s a list of all the tight ends offered by the Tigers in the 2018 class:

Mustapha Muhammad
Tyniel Hopper
Dominick Anderson
Brevin Jordan
Josh Whyle
Zach Sheffer
Another name was added to the list over the weekend — Nic McTear.

McTear committed to Oklahoma State in February. At the time, he held offers from Oklahoma State, Colorado State, North Texas, Toledo, Tulsa and Iowa State. Since his Feb. 6 commitment, offers have come in from Houston, Miami, Baylor and Auburn.

More are likely to come.

McTear remains committed to the Cowboys, but he expects to pay a few visits to other programs. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound McTear is the 43rd-ranked tight end in the country, according to the 247sports composite rankings.

Auburn’s best chance to scoop McTear would be due to his childhood proximity to the school. The 3-star tight end lived in the Hoover, Ala., area until he was 12. That’s when he made the move to Frisco, Texas. When Larry Porter offered McTear over the weekend, McTear decided a trip to Auburn was likely in his future.

“I’m eventually going to make my way over there,” McTear said.

Keyword player. No one is doubting his athletic ability. I guarantee Malzhan is the only one dumb enough to take him as the only QB in their class.

Why can't he be QB? Lol. Any other reason other than that he didn't start his junior year? Because that one doesn't mean he cannot be a good QB.

Well you're wrong. Georgia, Oregon & Texas are all recruiting him as a QB

Edit: Ah I see you buffered it with "only"

Sounds like we are headed to a bang up class on the DL. That'll be a change from last cycle.

I wouldn't mind seeing two QBs. I doubt you'd see two high profile guys come in.

Ya I feel pretty good about us pulling a solid DL class this year. Would love to sweep the instate guys Coynis Miller, Andres Fox, Alfred Thomas and Timaje Porter but probably won't happen. Still it seems like we are sitting in a much better position early than last year

KN says wouldn't be shocked if Porter ends up delaying announcement. Not sure if he is a take for AU or LSU right now FWIW

Coaches are trying to win. Not keep everyone happy. Malzahn hasn't signed and HS QB who is SEC caliber in his 7 years at AU so people have every right to be skeptical about Gatewood. I think dumb luck will eventually lead him to his guy if he hangs around long enough.

Sure but rotating 3 QBs is pretty strange (cue Gus jokes). He seemed to try and get all 3 snaps at QB spot each game. Maybe he really thinks using all 3 at spot will help him win but I also have to think he was trying to keep all that talent from transferring as well

I would argue that Sean White is SEC caliber when healthy but ya I get the skepticism on Gatewood, not arguing agains that. He's a project for sure but the payoff could be huge if he reaches potential. Very interested to follow his senior year

Which is why Gatewood is being used as a versatile offensive asset. Because Gatewood's versatility serviced the head coach's interests more than JG's QB development last year. After all, normally, you see small schools put their best weapon at QB. But at a bigger school with a ton of talent (Three QB's rated three star or better) the coaches can play to their strengths even more.

KN's next target watch is on the TE/H-Back spot. Tigers will likely sign one guy for this spot this season. The TE is expected to be used more often under Lindsey and he likes versatility at the position.

4* TE Tyneil Hopper has AU & UNC in his top group tho South Carolina is a team to watch. Hopper fits the mold of guys Lindsey likes at TE. Tigers recently offered 4* Brevin Jordan out of Las Vegas but he looks like a longshot at this point. AU has also offered 3* Josh Whyle recently. His recruitment is blowing up but says he does hope to visit AU sometime this spring/summer.

Auburn offered Tennessee legacy 3* Jacob Warren last week but Vols will be tough to beat. 3* Dominick Wood-Anderson is the #1 JUCO TE and apparently told 247 recently that AU was one of the teams recruiting him the hardest. The Tigers also recently offered Oklahoma State commit Nic McTear

Finally an interesting name to watch is 3* ATH Richard Jibunor. We are recruiting him as a LB right now but he is versatile enough he could play TE. AU has told him he can have a look at TE if he wants to

I want Hopper or Whyle and let Jibunor play Buck

Jordan is the stud from this group. Yes, he is a tough pull.

Hopper and Jibunor would be next based on film.

Jibunor could play a lot of places. He is as raw as they come, but look at him!
