If the limit is 25, though, why not sign 25...accounting for the way they do the whole early enrollee thing. We never seem to be close.

When I really think about it is every NFL draft. I see lots of guys from smaller schools getting drafted. And I always think to myself, surely these guys would’ve come to an SEC school. Maybe there are diamonds in the rough that take 2-3 years to develop that we are missing by not taking a full roster every year.

I don't think it's a hard 25 though. But again I have a rough understanding of how many players you can or can't sign

I do think staff likes to keep a few spots open to pursue grad transfers. They also aren't just gonna take a guy so that they use all their spots. There are a certain number of players the staff feel are talented enough to come in and play. If they don't sign enough of them to fill the class out they probably are going to save those scholarships to pursue options at grad transfer

Honestly I could see it both ways. Would be nice to fill out no matter what each season and maybe take a flyer or two on some kids, especially some of the underrated instate talent that Mississippi State has done a good job of capitalizing on. On other hand, it's also nice to be able to bring in a Blake Countess or Wilson Bell when need to shore up depth.

Overall though I think it's a valid concern and I would love to know what staff's reasoning behind the numbers they do or don't take actually is

Actually this is the first year we have had a signee not qualify since the 2013 class.

We have had a lot of attrition. Gus has taken the max or near the max every year. With new rules you can't take over the max anymore. 25 is a hard number. When you see teams with more than 25 that means they did not take a full 25 the previous class and finishing that 25 off with January enrollees from the next class.

13 with Asa. A lot of guys wanna see AU produce before jumping on board. I could be wrong but AU typically is in this range of commits heading into the season. We will likely pick up 3-5 more during the year and then get a ton at end of cycle. Malzahn's classes tend to load up in the summer and in the winter after the season ends

All correct not that Paw needed the confirmation.

If your roster is maxed/signed your 25, you may not have room for quality grad transfers, or JUCO guys, that could fill holes of players that unexpectedly leave the program or leave early for the NFL.

And those GTs & Jucos count against the yearly 25 new scholly limit too.

It is a hard 25 now. Any over is filling in unused spots in the 25 from the previous class.

Not really.

We've maybe had 3-4 or so guys EVER not qualify under Gus. I think he's signed 2 classes where everyone qualified, IIRC.

Jason Smith (High School)
Earnest Robinson
Newkirk (Did not sign though)
Alaric
Carlito (May be null & void since Memphis could & did take him.)

That sounds like when I say I went to Emory because it's close to home, failing mention how they just threw a whole lot more money at me than I could justify turning down to go to Duke

Well, plenty of kids get homesick. He got his offers and could return home for his last year. It's not that unbelievable really.

I also could be spinning this to take pressure off the bagmen.

Supposedly goal of going to IMG was to get a taste of living away from home, earn more offers because more coaches visit IMG than Austin and experience more of a college like program.

Shivers held in check last night. 16 carries for 23 yards. Team was facing a higher classification program and they dominated the trenches

KN has update on 4* WR Seth Williams. Williams continues to say coach he is closest to is Kodi Burns. Says the two talk most every day and calls him "like a brother". He plans on visiting for the first game next weekend and believes AU is going to throw the ball more this season. He just wants to see it. Plans to commit either near the end of the season or after. Claims no official leader but sounds like top 3 right now are Auburn, Alabama and Ole Miss. Auburn told him they want him as a big bodied guy they can throw the deep ball to

Recruiting Snapshot (247)

Can't copy & paste so will summarize. Number in parenthesis is the number of spots left according to KN

QB (1) - Justin Fields - UGA/FSU getting buzz but AU continues to think they are in the mix
RB (0-1) - More than likely done though someone like Harold Joiner who could play multiple positions is still an option
WR (1-2) - Justyn Ross/Seth Williams/Anthony Schwartz are top 3 targets with Williams being most likely right now
TE (0-1) - No sure thing AU takes a TE but keep an eye on Michael Parker/Nic McTear/Ben Sims
OL (3) - AU would like to land one more guard and maybe 2 tackles. Trey Hill top guy at guard, Dylan Wonnum top guy at tackle
DL (3-4) - AU aiming for another DT or two and at least two ends/bucks. Andres Fox could commit soon though LSU looks to be trending. Coynis Miller has UF #1 but KN still thinks he ends up at AU. AU looks good for Richard Jibunor who could commit next month
LB (1-2) - JJ Peterson/Quay Walker/Channing Tindall are the top targets. Peterson a Bama lean, Walker a Bama commit but thought to be flippable and Tindall a SCAR lean. Still work to be done here
DB (1-2) - AU done at safety so looking for CB. Kyler McMichael is top target & sounds like his commitment might be shaky. AU/UGA & others waiting to pounce

In the comments someone asked for backup options at QB if Fields goes elsewhere & KN mentioned 3* Steven Krajewski & 3* Yanez Rogers. Someone else asked about other DT targets & KN mentioned 3* John Mincey (Arkansas Commit), Jalen Cunningham (Bama lean) and said Andres Fox could grow into a DT
