August Recruiting Snapshot

It's everyone's favorite monthly post! Where I write an obscene amount of words attempting to recap where AU stands in recruiting and who they might sign months from now. As always, this is just my opinion based off reporting done by 247, SECCountry, AL.com and others.

Busy month for commits as AU landed five, 4 in the 2018 class and one in 2019. The two big booms were Quindarious Monday and Michael Harris. It's safe to say both were at the top of AU's board. Jamien Sherwoood might have been #2 on the board as well. Josh Marsh was a surprise but after a strong camp in late July he earned an offer and committed on the spot. Tigers also kicked off their 2019 class in style landing the composite #90 player in the country and #3 in the state of Alabama in Pickens. Solid month

5* Justin Fields --> AU/UGA/FSU battle where national writers say its Noles or Dawgs but AU "insiders" feel good about AU

RB
4* Asa Martin --> Commits August 24th. Top 4 of AU/BAMA/CLEM/UF. Tide considered team to beat
4* Dameon Pierce --> AU/UF appear to be top 2. Plans to wait to make decision
5* James Cook --> Never visited this summer, UGA lock
4* Harold Joiner --> again, who the frick knows, although he claims BAMA recruiting him the hardest

4* Justyn Ross --> AU/BAMA/CLEM battle, everybody feels good
4* Matthew Hill --> SCAR is making a push, AU/BAMA/SCAR top 3 with decision possibly soon (heard that before)
4* Kearis Jackson --> commits Aug 19th, would be shock if not UGA
4* Seth Williams --> AU pushing hard but Bama still considered favorite
4* Anthony Schwartz --> AU/UGA/UF battle with Gators in the lead, decision could come soon

4* Luke Ford --> BAMA/UGA battle with AU a distant 3rd, we become player if we land Fields AND show that TEs are people too in our offense
3* Michael Parker --> BAMA could be close to offering after missing on Wood-Anderson, if they do he's all Tide
3* Tyneil Hopper --> I think he's high on our board but not sure

4* William Barnes --> UF/UNC battle, hasn't visited AU in awhile
4* Richard Gouraige --> will probably commit to Gators soon
4* Dylan Wonnum --> pushed back commit date presumably because AU made a push, teammate Michael Harris committed to AU, battling SCAR
4* Badara Traore --> officially visited late July, LSU probably biggest threat
4* Qadir White --> doesn't sound like he's a priority
NR Doug Johnson --> haven't heard much so probably still backup

4* Quay Walker --> Bama commit but does not appear solid, visited AU apparently decked out in orange & blue
3* Rosendo Louis --> visited for cookout, name to watch if other guys start landing elsewhere (most notably McClain)
3* Nathaniel Watson --> looking like others higher on board

4* Kyler McMichael --> Clemson commit, AU still pursuing
4* Jalyn Armour-Davis --> AU still pushing but slim chance of flipping
4* Christian Tutt --> grades are a concern which is why OHST, BAMA, FSU & maybe UGA have all passed, NEB the favorite now
3* Derek Turner --> impressed at camp late July, could end up being a top CB target
3* Jamari Brown --> landed AU offer at camp, Junior Rosegreen's nephew, not sure if offer commitable
3* Charles McClelland --> have not heard much in awhile

Auburn finds new TE target

One of Auburn’s biggest mysteries in the 2018 recruiting cycle: tight end position.

The Tigers took two at the position in 2017 with junior college addition Sal Cannella and Colquitt County (Ga.) freshman John Samuel Shenker. But Cannella will play receiver more than tight end, so Auburn — while not desperate — would like depth behind Shenker at tight end.

But, for much of this recruiting cycle, it has been hard to find the prospects the Tigers want at the position.

A new target surfaced Tuesday when colleges were permitted to send formal scholarship offers to their top targets. Ben Sims announced on Twitter that Auburn had offered.

So who’s Sims?

He’s a 6-foot-5, 240-pound tight end from San Antonio, Texas who is verbally committed to Baylor and has been since June 2. Sims is ranked as the No. 45 tight end in the nation and the No. 972 overall prospect by the 247Sports composite.

Aside from Baylor, Sims holds offers from Houston, SMU and Bowling Green. It’ll be interesting to see if the Tigers can get the Texas native on campus and create competition with Baylor.

Tyneil Hopper is the only other tight end who has been mentioned throughout the class, and his standing with the Tigers hangs in the balance. Sims could be next man up.
