Agreed. Although it might not be a bad strategy to just try and get Joiner on board so it doesn't become Pierce or bust. If landing Joiner won't hurt recruiting Pierce (I don't think it will) then go ahead and do that. If you get Pierce later and Joiner decommits well that's not all that bad. Worst case scenario is you pass on Joiner, Martin goes Bama and you miss Pierce. Then you are stuck looking at tier 3 options

This is all wild conjecture on my part FWIW

Nation’s No. 5 running back Harold Joiner lists Auburn and Alabama in his top-6 (SECCountry)
quote:

Harold Joiner is one of the top running back talents for both Auburn and Alabama. And the 4-star running back has narrowed down his list of suitors.

Both Auburn and Alabama made the top-6 six for Joiner, as did USC, Michigan State, UCLA and Texas.

Joiner is the No. 4 player in the state of Alabama and attends Mountain Brook High School in Birmingham, Ala. He is also listed as the No. 5 running back prospect in the country per the 247Sports Composite rankings. LSU was also thought to be in the running but the Tigers picked up 3 running back commitments in the past week.

Auburn and Alabama are also competing for the services of another top Alabama running back, as the two are hoping to land a commitment from Asa Martin. He ranks as the No. 7 prospect in the state of Alabama and the No. 10 running back in the country. Florida is also involved in the pursuit of Martin.

4-star safety Quindarious Monday includes 4 SEC schools in top 7 (SECCountry)
quote:

Quindarious Monday is getting closer to making his college decision, and there is a good chance the 4-star safety from Atlanta could be heading to the SEC.

Monday released a list of his top seven schools on Saturday evening, including four SEC teams, which he posted on Twitter. Auburn, Tennessee, Florida and Georgia all made the cut for the 6-foot-3, 175-pound defensive back.

Clemson, Florida State and Georgia Tech rounded out Monday’s list.

Auburn is likely the favorite to land Monday at this point, as the safety previously told SEC Country. But at that time, Monday also said that he wanted to visit other schools and give them a fair chance while his recruitment is open.

According to the 247sports composite rankings, Monday is the No. 24 Georgia recruit in the Class of 2018 and the No. 221 recruit overall in the class.

FWIW we are not the likely favorite anymore. Clemson is the team to beat

Alabama in top 6 for nation’s No. 5 RB, but there’s no chance he commits there (SECCountry)
quote:

BEAVERTON, Ore. — Harold Joiner‘s recruitment is shaping up to be one of the oddest in the Class of 2018.

Joiner, the nation’s No. 5 running back from Mountain Brook (Ala.) High School, has Alabama, Auburn, Michigan State, Southern California, Texas and UCLA in his top six. It’s not really a top six because Michigan State leads and there’s no chance he winds up in the Crimson Tide’s class, he said.

Let’s break this down.

LSU was Joiner’s longtime leader until it landed three running back commitments. He eliminated the Tigers after they flipped AJ Carter from UCLA. Georgia was seen as a likely backup option at that point. He then eliminated the Bulldogs after they landed 5-star running back Zamir White.

Now, Michigan State, a school he has never stepped foot on and said, “I don’t know how I’m going to do in that weather,” leads. The Spartans are on top because he feels like there is a path to early playing time.

Joiner said he was told by Alabama’s staff just a few weeks ago that they are now specifically recruiting him at running back after wanting him as an athlete, which rubbed him the wrong way. It doesn’t matter, though.

“I have like eight running backs ahead of me right now at Alabama,” Joiner told SEC Country at The Opening Finals.

So, what is the point of having the Crimson Tide in his top six if he admits that he’s not going there?

“You have to ask my recruiter about that,” Joiner said. “He’s the only one who knows.”

I have no idea what that even means, but it’s clear Joiner and Alabama is pretty much over at this point.

Every interview this kid does makes me like him less.... Obviously I have never met the kid and it's unfair for me to really say one way or the other but he comes off pretty bad in a lot of these articles

Nation's top recruit Trevor Lawrence wants Justyn Ross to join him at Clemson (AL.com)
quote:

If Central-Phenix City five-star receiver Justyn Ross wants to leave the state for college, he has a good idea of what's to come.

Ross is on the same Opening finals team as Trevor Lawrence, the nation's No. 1 overall prospect and a quarterback from Cartersville, Ga.

The 6-foot-6 Lawrence is committed to Clemson and is billed as a generational talent. Alabama is in slight contact with Lawrence, but he's not wavering.

And he's hoping that Ross, a five-star recruit who stands at 6-foot-4, will leave the state. Ross' top five is Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida State and Florida. He has visited Clemson and had rave reviews about the trip.

Lawrence and Ross have more quiet personalities. The two connect on the field.

"He's a great quarterback," Ross said Friday at The Opening finals. "Everything that he does, it's perfect. His ball is so easy to catch."

Lawrence said that it's "been cool to talk to (Ross) and throw with him. He's tall, he's long, he'll make all the catches and he's fast."

He believes that Clemson now speaks for itself.

"Clemson always has great wide receivers and knows how to use their receivers really well," Lawrence said. "They end up having great stats and the kind of people Clemson builds is a big thing.

"I feel great about our chances. With what Clemson has to offer. He might not choose Clemson, but I think we have a good chance."

Ross will likely take his decision to National Signing Day.

Mountain Brook's Harold Joiner to showcase talents at The Opening (AL.com)
quote:

No recruiting service has Mountain Brook's Harold Joiner rated higher than 247Sports.

The site has the 6-foot-3, 218-pound Joiner as a four-star recruit ranked No. 56 nationally, as the No. 3 running back and as the No. 2 prospect in Alabama.

In the composite rankings, combining 247Sports with Scout, ESPN and Rivals, Joiner checks in at No. 139 nationally.

Joiner released a top six of Alabama, Auburn, USC, UCLA, Michigan State and Texas. He recently eliminated LSU, his one-time leader, and Georgia after they have too many commits at running back.

"We love him," 247Sports director of scouting Barton Simmons said. "It's so rare to see a kid with his size and his athleticism. Ten to 15 years ago, I'd have said he is too big to be a running back, but with Bo Scarbrough, Jalen Hurd, all of these 6-2 running backs, Deonta Foreman, there's guys everywhere that are big bodied backs who can make it.

"Because of the way he can catch the ball and his versatility, that makes him a valuable, rare kid in this class."

Joiner is looking for a place that will give him a chance to play running back. After not mentioning much offensively other than tight end, Joiner said that Alabama is recruiting him now at running back and receiver. Same goes for Auburn.

Joiner will be participating in Nike's The Opening Finals in Beaverton, Ore. He'll do skills tests on Saturday and participate in 7-on-7 competition Sunday and Monday.

247Sports uses the Opening to justify or move recruit rankings. Joiner will get a chance to shine in front of national analysts.

"I can see him playing a number of positions but I wouldn't count out running back for him," Simmons said." Especally in a year where this isn't a great running back class, we're willing to gamble on because of those rare athletic traits."

He's a good kid. We've known him for quite a while. He's the same age as my son and they went to school together for a while. Not sure why all the drama, but he hopped around Bham going to different high schools. Guessing this is just a continuation of the high school shopping.

Catching up on Alabama, Auburn targets from The Opening (AL.com)
quote:

We're almost at the halfway point of Nike Football's The Opening in Beaverton, Ore. So far, we've only had Elite 11 competition, and watched quarterbacks, receivers and tight ends throw on air.

It gets better today and through Monday, when the event concludes. The other prospects compete today in a showcase and combine. Better news for me is that we get to talk to some of them later tonight.

7-on-7 play begins tomorrow, along with the lineman challenge. We'll get to see in-state talents like offensive lineman Tank Jenkins, receiver Justyn Ross and running back Harold Joiner in a national setting.

Here's what I have been able to get so far.

* Elite QB Justin Fields recently visited Alabama, and he's been to Auburn more than once. It seems like Auburn has the better chance of the two to land Fields. Georgia, Florida and Florida State are also in the mix. Others are as well. Fields is doing all of the interviews here, but I still think he wants to keep as much as he can to the vest.

Read what Fields said about Alabama and read what he said about Auburn.

* California five-star quarterback Matt Corral has a final three of Alabama, Georgia and Florida. He has not visited Alabama yet, but plans to later this month. Hear from Corral here.

* Another California quarterback, four-star Jack Tuttle, is being pursued by Alabama despite his Utah commitment. He says that he does not plan to visit Alabama because he is committed to Utah. So, the only way I can see him visiting Alabama or elsewhere is if he backs off his commitment. From talking to him, that does not seem likely.

* Tanner McKee, yet another California quarterback, is an Alabama target. I haven't yet talked to him here, but have in messages. He has visited Alabama previously. The 6-foot-6 McKee is slated to go on a Mormon mission after high school, so would be a class of 2020 recruit though he can commit now.

* Luke Ford is an impressive tight end here. He's about 6-foot-7, 240 pounds from Illinois. He recently decommitted from Arkansas. Alabama is his leader right now, and Auburn is also in the mix. There's a story to come from me after a talk with Ford, but he really wants to see how these schools use their tight end this fall. He says he'll commit on Signing Day or during the Under Armour All-America game.

* Big news here for Alabama fans, as receiver Xavier Williams says he's close to shutting down his recruitment. The south Florida receiver hears the chatter about him flipping to Miami and laughs it off. Alabama did a great job here connecting with his family.

* Justyn Ross, the state's top prospect, and top national prospect Trevor Lawrence are on the same 7-on-7 team and have been working together all week. More details here.

Look for more content on Alabama and Auburn targets through Monday and even after The Opening finals.

That's good to hear. It's easy for us to judge a lot of these dudes off just quick quotes and I admit I do it more than I should. No doubt he's an elite athlete, I just don't know if he's a RB at next level. Hopefully if we get him he proves all of us wrong

Alabama leads for top TE Luke Ford, and he's also watching Auburn closely (AL.com)
quote:

Luke Ford is taking a hard look at all schools recruiting him, but Alabama is currently in the driver's seat for one of the nation's best tight ends.

The 6-foot-7, 248-pound Ford, a four-star recruit from Carterville, Ill., recently decommitted from Arkansas. He's the No. 4 tight end in the 247Sports composite, No. 4 overall tight end and No. 1 prospect in Illinois.

Ford cemented his offer from Alabama two weeks ago at a camp.

"They said I didn't do good, they said I did really good," Ford said at The Opening Finals in Beaverton, Ore. "They thought I did well and said I'm their No. 1 guy in recruiting for tight ends. It made me feel good. They're Alabama."

Alabama is after junior college standout tight end Dominick Wood-Anderson, who decides next month, but would likely take two if Ford also wants Alabama.

But he knows that Alabama has four tight ends on scholarship.

"Depth chart is a big factor," Ford said. "I'm going to have to look into that stuff. I want playing time. I'm not sure I want to wait until my junior or senior year to play."

But what's more important to Ford is how teams use their tight ends. Ford had great visits to Alabama and Auburn. He's also been to Georgia and LSU and wants to visit Texas. Arkansas remains in the mix.

He likely won't commit until National Signing Day or at the Under Armour All-America game in early January.

"I want to make a well-informed decision," Ford said. "Everybody's in the race, so I want to visit more schools."

First, Ford said Alabama was "probably No. 1 or No. 2" and the other school there would be Auburn. He then said, when informed that many crystal ball picks were in Alabama's favor, that those picks were on the right track.

"Alabama would probably be first," Ford said. "Everyone else is kind of around there. I really don't have an order."

Ford got the royal treatment on visits to Alabama and Auburn last month.

"First off, the facilities (at Alabama) were amazing," Ford said. "The campus was amazing. Nick Saban was awesome. You see a lot of things in the media where Nick Saban never smiles or never laughs. When I was in there, he was laughing and joking around."

Auburn also impressed Ford.

"The head coach, Coach (Gus) Malzahn, he literally took us on a tour by himself," Ford said. "He took us around the stadium and around the facilities. For a head coach to spend that much time on me, it made me feel great."

But Auburn tight ends had just two receptions last season, and Ford needs to see more.

"The thing about Auburn is that they say they're going to use tight ends, but they had almost zero production from tight ends," Ford said.

"What's going to come down to Auburn, they can be in my top five right now but after the season, if they're not using tight ends, they can drop out real quick."

And that's why Ford is taking his time. He also wants to see how Alabama uses tight ends after the departure of first-round NFL Draft pick O.J. Howard.

"I want to see how everything plays out," Ford said. "The proof is in the pudding. Coaches can say they use their tight ends, but until I see it on game film, it doesn't matter."

I mean hard to argue with that. A top receiving TE is gonna want to see us actually use TEs

The latest on elite LB JJ Peterson, an Alabama and Auburn target, includes a new No. 2 (AL.com)
quote:

AL.com was able to catch up with JJ Peterson, a four-star linebacker from Moultrie, Ga., at The Opening Finals in Beaverton, Ore., on Sunday.

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Peterson is the nation's No. 41 overall recruit and No. 2 outside linebacker. He plays for former Hoover coach Rush Propst at Colquitt County High School in Moultrie, Ga.

Peterson is a man of few words, but plays big. Here's what he had to say on Sunday:

** Alabama still leads. He plans to be back in Tuscaloosa sometime later this month. He didn't have a specific date, but it might be for Alabama's Champions Cookout.

** Auburn is no longer his No. 2. That belongs to Oregon. Oregon always has that appeal because of the colors and the Nike uniforms, etc. He says they are "right there" with Alabama.

** Auburn is No. 3, and is certainly not far off. He says he speaks with linebackers coach Travis Williams on a regular basis.

** Georgia is fourth. He has visited Georgia more than any other school.

** Rush Propst's ties to Alabama don't necessarily mean he will go there.

** The biggest impact in Peterson's decision will be the best place for his infant daughter Allie, he said. She will be with him throughout college.

** Peterson wants to make his five official visits, but is trying to graduate from Colquitt County and enroll early. He says a commitment won't be anytime soon, but will likely be sometime this fall.

Happens every year at The Opening. Kids fall in love with Oregon and put them in their top group of even in the case of Tre McKitty last year commit. But very few end up sticking with it. I still suspect we will be Bama's #1 threat but I don't see anyone beating them out

Auburn in better position than Alabama for Mountain Brook's Harold Joiner (AL.com)
quote:

Mountain Brook four-star running back Harold Joiner released a top six recently that included in-state programs Alabama and Auburn along with schools far away such as Michigan State, USC, UCLA and Texas.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Joiner is one of two prospects from Alabama at The Opening finals in Beaverton, Ore., along with Central-Phenix City receiver Justyn Ross. Park Crossing offensive lineman Tank Jenkins was invited, but was unable to come due to illness.

Joiner has visited Alabama twice this year. He went two weeks ago, where he said he was now being recruited as a running back and receiver. But he said he does not see himself going to Alabama because of its crowded depth chart at the running back position.

Auburn is a much more likely option. Joiner said he's visiting Auburn soon, possibly next weekend. He is done camping at schools, but likes how Auburn is recruiting him.

"Auburn, it's hometown and their depth chart is looking really good," Joiner said. "Coach (Gus) Malzahn mentioned receiver. My primary position would be running back, but he said he could rotate me out to receiver too, and I'd be fine with that."

Joiner hasn't visited the other schools, but has offers from them and is working on scheduling a visit.

"Michigan State, love the way they play and their depth chart is all right right now," Joiner said. "Michigan State, they have a great offensive line.

"UCLA, it's in L.A. They have a good offense, too, and I can fit in well in that and USC, I can fit into."

Texas had a coach visit Joiner during spring practice.

Joiner is looking to play running back at the next level. He is a four-star recruit at the position. He has shown well at The Opening early on at the position.

As he said on June 2, Joiner could make his commitment before his senior season.

KN posted a lot of VIP nuggets this weekend. First is one on JJ Peterson

Bama still the team to beat. The rest of his top 5 are Auburn, Georgia, Michigan and Oregon. The main thing going for AU right now is T-WILL. Also really liked fact that when he visited for BCW we had activities for his family (he has a young daughter). Also he really liked sitting down with Malzahn 1v1 and says he's a "laid-back kind of dude", also called AU "homey". He plans on waiting to take his official visits before committing

4* LB Channing Tindall no longer has South Carolina as his lone top team. Says it's a group of SCAR, Georgia, Auburn, Florida and Notre Dame. Has tentative plans to commit before the season but not set in stone. Wants to camp at AU so he can work 1 on 1 with coaches, also do the same at UGA. Tindall said he likes AU's coaching staff and scheme along with how they use their LBs. Interestingly he says AU is recruiting him at the Buck spot which he likes. Has no official visits set and his leader changes daily. No set date for return trip to AU but wants to come back for a camp so he can get some coaching

Not sure I like him as a Buck player. I personally think he's better at the traditional LB spot. However if it helps land the kid I say go for it. He's an athletic freak who I have no doubt we can find a spot for in our defense. FWIW it sounds like this is Muschamp's top LB and anyone he wants I want too

4* S Quindarious Monday plans on having a decision soon. He plans on visiting AU on July 11th, Florida on July 14th and then will be at Clemson for their "All-In Cookout" on July 21st. UGA & FSU are also in the mix and says that a big part of his decision is choosing a school his parents can get too easily

My gut says he commits to Clemson at their lame named cookout. Would love for us to get some momentum back on his next visit but just not looking good for us right now

3* TE Michael Parker says he has a top group of Auburn, Purdue, Central Florida, South Florida and Southern Miss (I am sure this list excites some on here ) but not sure on when he will commit. Wants to trim things down to a top 3 by end of the summer. Parker showed out at AU camp this summer and earned an offer. Say he really likes the coaches and it's clear they care about their players. Our message to him is TE is a big need because we have a major gap a this position due to unfortunate circumstances. He plans to visit sometime this month and apparently we gave him 3 dates to pick from. He has two brothers that are walkons at Bama and he camped there this summer as well. Saban told him they are interested and Parker says he's just looking for the right fit

With Bama probably going to get Anderson-Wood and Ford I think chances are good for us to get Parker
