Garner could very well assume that Newkirk will be a DT, which wouldn't be much of a stretch if he really is already around 285. So, in that sense, your ideal class would probably work just fine.

It's funny how things change - just six or so years ago anyone would have laughed had the words "Clemson" and "dream school" been used in the same sentence.

The belief is he will be a 3 tech at AU so ya that would be 2 DTs, 2 DEs & a Buck in that group. I wouldn't mind getting another pure DT though if possible

What's crazy is when you see someone like Joseph Foucha or Justin Fields say they grew up AU fans because of Cam Newton and then realize that was 7 years ago when many of these kids were like 10. It's one of the reasons recruiting against Bama is so hard because so many of them have grown up watching Bama dominate the past decade. Clemson has won 10+ games since 2011 and that sort of stuff has an impact

That's why at end of the day it comes down to winning. If AU can somehow get to consistently battling Bama for the SEC West/SEC title then we can go from a consistent top 10 recruiting team to top 5

So dream scenario I would imagine is Daquan Newkirk, Coynis Miller, Andres Fox, Caleb Tannor & Richard Jibunor

More likely scenario is Coynis, Newkirk, & a juco for 3 DTs: Jibunor for the Buck which is often a Weak Side End in Steele's scheme, & Tannor or Fox for DE. I think if we go with 5 DL a 3rd DT is more likely than a 3rd DE.

There's been a couple jucos tossed around plus I'm sure CRG is looking at more.

One of the reasons I've never been too disappointed in this staff when it comes to recruiting.

To be consistently top 10 nationally with the kind of inconsistency we have shown on the field since 2013 is pretty remarkable.

We must be doing something right.

Auburn makes the cut for nation's No. 2 JUCO offensive tackle (AL.com)
quote:

One of the nation's top junior college prospects trimmed his list of potential schools on Monday, and Auburn made the cut.

Four-star offensive tackle Badara Traore released his top seven college choices via Twitter, with Auburn among three SEC programs included. Along with the Tigers, Traore is considering LSU and Ole Miss, as well as Oregon, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Nebraska.

The 6-foot-8, 315-pound offensive tackle out of Hyde Park, Mass., is rated as the No. 2 JUCO offensive tackle in the nation and is regarded as the eighth-best JUCO prospect, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. He currently attends ASA College in New York.

Traore is scheduled to take a trip to Auburn's campus next month for a visit.

The Tigers are hoping to add four or five offensive linemen with their 2018 recruiting class. Auburn currently has two linemen committed: three-star prospects Jalil Irvin and Kameron Stutts. While Auburn remains in the hunt for several key high school linemen, with the team losing five seniors after the 2017 season, offensive line coach Herb Hand is weighing the option of adding a JUCO lineman such as Traore or dipping into the graduate transfer circuit again next year.

Should Traore choose Auburn, he would be just the program's second ever player from Massachusetts, joining former quarterback Ben Durand, who was as a walk-on from 2012-14.

The rub is it's hard to do that without better recruiting. Soooo....

We will go with the ole "2019 DT class is loaded. Garner will rack up in Ga next year" line.

The 2018 class is a lot better than 2017, especially in SEC states but I don't think that's relevant here. With Antwuan leaving & not getting the Texas Tech transfer who chose LSU, I think if we take a 3rd DT it would be looking for a guy that can play some early. I don't think many of the 2018 available DTs will be doing that.

Not saying it will be easy Just was trying to explain why Clemson has gone from a joke to a "dream school". Consistently winning is how you become a top recruiting power

I think we all agree though that Gus has underachieved in recent seasons. That's why this year is so big. On paper it appears he's got everything in place to compete for a championship. If he can do that then we will probably see a few of these battles tip our way but more importantly it will set us up well for the 2019 class which is going to be real strong

At end of day facilities are nice, environment is important and location always helps but winning is what gets it done. Gus has to start winning now or he will be gone and we will be starting this thing all over again

Well I can tell ya that the 2019 class is loaded but I don't think the DT position necessarily is right now. No doubt that the lack of GA DT talent has hurt us recently which is why getting someone like Coynis Miller is so important. If he goes elsewhere then ya we probably will once again dip into the JUCO ranks

FWIW there is a lot of D1 DT talent instate but it's very average. I personally really like Alfred Thomas but he's 6'1" on a good day and Garner has never signed a DT under 6'2". I thought we might go after Allen Love but he has camped at Bama and AU has evaluated and neither offered. I think that tells ya what those teams think. Timaje Porter has big weight issues and Jalen Cunningham might too. Ka'darian Hill is nothing special

Basically the pool is not that deep this season unless some guys breakout during their senior year and unfortunately I don't see a ton in next year's class right now either. That will probably mean AU leans on JUCO or recruits more of those SDE type of players like Newkirk and convert them to DTs

Jackson impresses at Auburn camp (Rivals)
quote:

AUBURN | To say Shedrick Jackson had a good performance at Auburn’s half-day camp on Saturday would be an understatement.

The Hoover wideout was clearly the top player in attendance, won every rep in 1-on-1s versus the camp’s top cornerbacks, and posted numbers one would expect from one of the top receivers in the 2018 class.

“I felt like I went out and did some good stuff,” Jackson said. “I wanted to go out, get better and compete.”

And he did.

Jackson, before dominating in the 1-on-1s, ran a hand-timed 4.37-second 40-yard dash, had a broad jump of 10 feet 11 inches and a 40-inch vertical leap.

“That made me feel good, feel confident,” Jackson said. “It gave me some momentum.”

Jackson worked during the camp with Auburn wide receivers coach Kodi Burns, which the receiver hadn’t done prior to Saturday. Sure, Jackson, the nephew of former Auburn great Bo Jackson, has attended numerous practices at Auburn where he's watched Burns coach.

“But it was the first time I got to work with him,” Jackson said. “I’d never been to a camp before, so it was good to get some work with him, to see what it’s like, what his tempo is like and how he coaches on the field.”

Jackson enjoyed the experience.

“It was great,” Jackson said. “Until you get on the field with him and get input from him, you don’t really know. And that’s what it’s all about. It was great learning from him.”

Jackson has the opportunity to learn from Burns more in the future. Auburn offered Jackson a scholarship in the spring, and has been a favorite of his since.

Auburn remains a top choice for Jackson, who could announce a commitment soon. He plans to release a video of his decision possibly within the next week, although Jackson doesn’t list a leader among his five favorites: Auburn, Mississippi State, Georgia Tech, Missouri and Memphis.

Rivals ranks Jackson, who is listed at 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, the No. 3 wide receiver in Alabama behind five-star Justyn Ross of Central-Phenix City and four-star Seth Williams of Bryant in Cottondale.

Really excited to see what he does on the field this year. Like Gatewood it seems every time he shows up at a camp/event he looks better. Hoover will have him and George Pickens at WR so I expect a lot of passing this season

To add to this point I also like Malik Langham who I think can grow into a DT. Would not mind us trying to get him on campus for a camp and offering. Very raw but has all the size Garner loves

Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge: Southeast predictions

quote:

Kearis Jackson

Wide Receiver
4 STARS
Peach County
Fort Valley, GA
RR: 5.9
Ht: 6'0"
Wt: 191 lbs

The situation: Auburn is in the mix, he will likely take a look at Michigan and Ohio State later this summer, but Georgia has been trending for some time with Jackson. He has visited Athens close to a dozen times over the past 18 months, he knows he is important to this Georgia class and he has a great bond with coach James Coley (wide receivers) and head coach Kirby Smart.

The pick: Georgia

quote:

Christian Armstrong

Offensive tackle
4 STARS
Warner Robins
Warner Robins, GA
RR: 5.8
Ht: 6'4"
Wt: 330 lbs

The situation: Auburn and Penn State are legitimate contenders, and a few others are hanging around, but Florida State has had a little momentum for a couple of months. Armstrong loves Rick Trickett (FSU's offensive line coach) and the Seminoles have made him a priority. If you are a gambler, now is a good time to bet on Florida State.

The pick: Florida State

quote:

Richard Jibunor

Athlete
4 STARS
Athens Christian School
Athens, GA
RR: 5.8
Ht: 6'4"
Wt: 210 lbs

The situation: Is it Auburn or is it Tennessee? Jibunor was just at Tennessee over the weekend and this one could go either way, but Auburn seems to have an edge here. He is extremely comfortable with the staff on the Plains, they have made him believe he can make a big impact in their defense and he admits it feels like home when he is there. This is a very tight race, but Auburn is the pick.

The pick: Auburn

Really hoping Jibunor jumps on board soon. Really excited about him

I think we will get one of Seth Williams/Kearis Jackson/Marquez Ezzard. I don't know who but I am hoping a resurrected passing game convinces one of those 3 to jump on board with Justyn Ross, Matthew Hill and Shedrick Jackson. Would be a big class for Burns
