KN now thinking of switching back to OHST. He's struggling right now on some stuff. He seemed blindsided by Armour-Davis, is indecisive on Coynis Miller and just seems lost with Teague. Needs to nail down some better sources

KN is CB happy today. Just put a bunch in

flipped CB to OHST on 3* RB Master Teague (2 more CBs are in for OHST both from national guys)
4* DT D'Andre Litaker --> TEN
ATH Charles McLelland --> AU
4* LB Channing Tindall --> SCAR (damn I like this kid)
4* OT Richard Gouraige --> UF

Not a lot of positive momentum for AU on the trail right now. Would love for Shedrick Jackson to commit just so there's something happy to post about

Sources aren't the problem. These are 16-18 year old kids. Grasping what they may decide to do can be very tricky hence why recruiting is soo damn fluid.

Everybody was blind sided by JAD but everyone also knew & said Bama would be a threat if they wanted to be.

I guess you can add another one to your theory though. He feels Bama is trending for Ross. There are people close to AU who are confident AU still leads. In fact one is on The Bunker and has had a long track record of being very reliable on recruiting outcomes. He put out a 6 month avi bet a couple weeks ago that Ross would pick AU FWIW. He said he's not as confident as he was on Marlon Davidson but still fairly confident.

True but my point was it seems he's struggled more than usual here recently on some of these guys. He's twice now apologized for not having a good handle on recruitments (Armour-Davis, Teague) & then apologized for the "drama" around his CB flips with Miller. Could be recency bias but I just don't remember that happening much in the past.

As for Ross it seems like all 3 teams (AL/AU/CLEM) all like where they stand. Most of the time the season doesn't have a major affect on a recruit unless it results in coaching staff change but I do think passing offense this season is going to matter in Ross's recruitment. At this point I am cautiously optimistic but until we sign a composite #1 player with Saban at Bama I am not gonna get hopes too high

He's apologizing because he takes it personally when he's not on top of every recruit. He shouldn't though. Like I said. We are talking about 16-18 year old kids who could change their mind on the drop of a dime in many cases. TBH it's damn impressive he has been on top of all the recruitments he has been over time. He's bound to hit a stretch of off info in this type of climate. The important things are he's not a homer and puts the realist info out he can.

FWIW Bunker insider Mikecb22 says Bama leads for Asa. National Analyst for 247 Steve Wiltfong says Dameon Pierce is a top target for Florida. If we miss on them I'm not sure what's next on the board.

5-star OT Calvin Ashley will have chance to play immediately for Auburn football (SECCountry)
quote:

LAKE MARTIN, Ala. — Right after 5-star offensive tackle Calvin Ashley officially signed with Auburn in February, Gus Malzahn hinted the 6-foot-6 freshman could play right away for the Tigers.

A few months later, after Ashley settled onto campus as an early-summer enrollee, that strategy is a strong possibility.

“We recruited him, we talked about that, and now that he’s here you can tell that we’re getting good reports from the weight room and everything that goes with it,” Malzahn said Thursday night before his Ambush Tour appearance with the Lake Martin Auburn Club. “So he’ll have a chance to show what he can do early in fall camp.”

Ashley will start his Auburn career at left tackle. The Tigers return senior starter Darius James, but the former Texas Longhorn has the ability to play multiple positions up front.

Ashley, who ranked No. 27 overall and No. 6 among offensive tackles in the class of 2017 by the 247Sports Composite, was Auburn’s highest-rated signee this offseason.

“He’s extremely talented,” Malzahn said. “He’s a guy that is very athletic for how big he is.”

Ashley is one of the pieces of an offensive line puzzle Auburn has heading into the fall. In addition to Ashley and fellow tackle Austin Troxell, the Tigers added two graduate transfers on the interior who didn’t participate in spring ball.

Those new arrivals will push for spots on the depth chart, as Auburn had to replace two starters in left guard Alex Kozan and right tackle Robert Leff from its 2016 line.

“We’ve got some freshmen coming in that we think are talented guys and the two fifth-year guys, there will be some really good competition in fall camp,” Malzahn said. “Then obviously you want five guys in the same positions sooner rather than later. That’ll be a big thing early in fall camp.”

Auburn offensive line coach Herb Hand said this spring Ashley had ready-now ability from “a skill set standpoint.”

According to Malzahn, Ashley has the right mentality to go with it.

“I know he’s got that mindset he’s wanting to play, so that’s always good for a young lineman, too,” Malzahn said.

It probably won't happen but I would love to see a line of Tega/James/Golson/Smith/Ashley. More than likely tho I think Ashley will be that 6th OL in the unbalanced looks

Auburn DB target (possibly offensive target?) Kyler McMichael enjoyed meaningful talk with Gus Malzahn (SECCountry)
quote:

AUBURN, Ala. — In three visits, Kyler McMichael‘s viewpoint of Auburn has drastically changed.

He attended a game last fall and has now visited twice this spring. He’s a prospect who has recently emerged as a realistic top target for Auburn — placing the Tigers in his top 5 — and wants to continue his regular trips to the Plains. McMichael was on campus for Big Cat Weekend.

He hopes to be back several times before his commits.

“We definitely made it a priority to get back up [to Auburn]. It’s definitely a top school. I love everything they have to say,” McMichael said. “I’m definitely trying to make it a priority to get back up here as much as possible. … I had no idea what Auburn was like at all. Like getting up here and being able interact with everyone, I loved it.”

The No. 105-ranked overall player in the nation, according to the 247Sports composite rankings, said the best part of Big Cat Weekend versus most recruiting events was “being able to interact with a bunch of different coaches.” Most of that time was spent with defensive coordinator Kevin Steele and secondary coach Greg Brown, who are chasing the 4-star cornerback.

But this visit had a different encounter that helped add intrigue: one with Gus Malzahn.

“I was able to talk to the head coach and get an idea of what he saw in me and how he can use me. That was great,” McMichael said. “He thinks I’m a great player. He could talk to my family and really get an idea of how we do things. He was able to ask me what I was looking in getting out of a school like this.”

One interesting part of that quote is the phrase “how he can use me.”

McMichael is ranked as the nation’s No. 13 cornerback. Some programs might even see the 6-foot-1, 196-pound defender as a future safety. But Auburn hinted at something during his Big Cat Weekend visit that only Clemson had done in the past — that McMichael could be used on offense.

“We talked offensive-wise, as well. Loved that,” McMichael said. “Possibly getting offensive plays. Possibly looking at slot or running back, so I’d love that. Clemson has been talking a lot about that, too.”

McMichael said Auburn, Clemson, Florida State and Alabama are recruiting him harder than anyone else, and those are the visits he would like to take throughout this summer as he narrows in on a decision.

The 4-star corner from Greater Atlanta Christian (Ga.) previously said he’d like to commit before the start of his senior season, but he now has another approach he might take since he won’t be enrolling early.

“I was planning on committing before the season, but I’m probably going to hold off so I can get up here, spend the night on campus, get an idea,” McMichael said

another offseason with SOME uncertainty on Malzahn's long term future have been problematic on the trail, I assume. If we have a great year on the field we'll get back to normal. We're just not the kind of school that can go a long time without making a big time run at a title, otherwise we fall into a mish-mosh of not quite top tier schools that have to take the scraps of the elites and "state schools".

Luckily, I do think that we're going to have a very big year on both sides of the ball and it should lead to some big fish jumping on board and quell the lingering moans about Gus, moving forward.

Report: Auburn denies former DT Antwuan Jackson’s appeal to transfer to SEC school (SECCountry)
quote:

Former Auburn football defensive lineman Antwuan Jackson Jr. is still looking for a new school after the Tigers reportedly denied his appeal to transfer to another SEC program.

According to Phil Kornblut at The State of Columbia, S.C., Auburn denied Jackson’s appeal to lift restrictions on his transfer away from the program. The former top-50 recruit is reportedly barred from transferring to any other SEC school as well as Clemson, Ohio State, Mercer and Georgia Southern.

Kornblut reports Jackson is most likely headed to a junior college following the appeal denial. He redshirted during his true freshman season in 2016 and left the program last month.

“He’s vetting some JUCOs he might attend in Mississippi,” Jackson’s mother, Darnisha Allen-Jackson, told Kornblut. “He is weighing all options. He’s not sure if he wants to sit out a year. He redshirted last year and he misses playing the game. So, he’s weighing all of his options. He should know something by the first week of July.”

Kornblut reported South Carolina was a transfer destination high on Jackson’s list. South Carolina assistant coach Lance Thompson was one of Jackson’s recruiters during his time at Auburn.

Former Auburn teammate Stephen Davis Jr., a native of South Carolina, transferred there last month. However, Davis Jr. will have to walk on at South Carolina in 2017 and sit out a year because of Auburn’s restrictions.

According to Kornblut, Allen-Jackson said the family has not been in any contact with coaches from South Carolina or any other SEC school.

Allen-Jackson also told Kornblut that Auburn didn’t give the family a specific reason for blocking Jackson’s transfers to the schools on the list.

“It seems very petty because Antwuan requested his transfer,” Allen-Jackson said, per Kornblut. “Seems like the one year of punishment should be enough.

Wish we would just let em transfer & be done with it especially since I think he will be a bust. However, dude should just go play a season at JUCO and then get a chance to compete back in the SEC. Basically he would have 2 back to back redshirt seasons if we let him transfer. Might work out best for him to actually play some a year in JUCO

FWIW I do think there is some positive stuff going for us on the trail it's just everything going public right now isn't great (Walker to Bama, Teague to OHST, Monday & McClain both backing off us as clear leaders). I think we are in a really good spot with guys like Fox, Jibunor, Thomas, Jackson, Hill and Harris. Just wished someone would commit already

I also agree tho on the Malzahn point. Smart & Orgeron are in a bit of a grace period so can sell future. Saban can sell championships. Malzahn is entering year 5 & tho he can sell Sugar Bowl last year getting whooped and that 8-5 record make it a bit hollow. Need to win this season. Do that and I think we will have an excellent class.

imo the absolute worst thing that could happen is another 8-4 season. Would probably mean Malzahn keeps his job but then there's not really much he can sell. Either win big and get the hype going again or crash and burn so new coach can sell future like Smart/Orgeron. I am optimistic tho that Iron Bowl will decide SEC West & SEC this year

2 true freshmen could provide immediate pass-rushing help for Auburn football (SECCountry)
quote:

LAKE MARTIN, Ala. — Some positions in college are easier to play right out of high school than others. Auburn football has a pair of playmakers who could make that quick jump at an area of need in 2017.

Auburn true freshmen Markaviest Bryant and T.D. Moultry are both natural pass rushers joining a program that lost its top two — Carl Lawson and Montravius Adams — to the NFL this offseason. That could be perfect timing for the duo in their first season on the Plains.

“With [defensive line coach Rodney Garner], he’s done a really good job with the young guys,” Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said Thursday at his Ambush Tour appearance. “He plays young guys if they’re talented enough to do that. [Defensive coordinator Kevin] Steele is really good at finding ways to let young guys play and be specific at the things their strengths are.”

Bryant, who hasn’t been limited in summer workouts after a freak injury to his right hand last month, will be a Buck defensive end under Garner. “Big Cat” had 36.5 tackles for loss and 15.5 sacks in his senior season at Crisp County (Ga.) High School.

“I think we’re getting a dynamic young man that has a tremendous skill set,” Garner said in February. “He has great length. He can bend, and he has burst. He’s got the ability to affect the game in a third-down situation when you want to get pressure on the quarterback.”

According to Auburn coaches, Moultry will start out as a traditional outside linebacker under Travis Williams. However, Moultry has the ability to play Buck — and he inherited the No. 55 jersey from Lawson.

“He’ll be with me,” Williams said this spring. “He’ll be a designated pass rusher, as well. We’re going to figure the things he can do, but he can do a lot of good things. We’ve got to put him in the right spots and see what he can do. We’re looking at him as a Money ‘backer and designated pass rusher.”

The Money, or strongside, linebacker position blitzes the most in Steele’s scheme. Whether he lines up there or closer to the line of scrimmage in the Buck end position — a hybrid in its own right — Moultry is expected to bring some instant impact to the pass rush.

Malzahn said the staff is eager to see what Moultry and Bryant will do in their first full practices at Auburn. Their performances there could go a long way in securing early playing time on a defense that needs to reload quickly post-Lawson and Adams.

“When we recruited those guys, we thought both of those guys have the potential to be very good pass rushers,” Malzahn said. “That’s one of the things early in fall camp that I know the defensive coaches will put them in those situations and see if they’re ready.”

Wonder if we will see some more 3-4 looks this year. Something where Russell & Davidson are the ends with Brown at the nose. Then Moultry/Holland/James at one OLB spot & D. Williams/Atkinson at other with T. Williams/D.Davis both at ILB. I think for once the LB spot is a position of strength going into the season

Even without commitments, Gus Malzahn says Auburn’s recent Big Cat Weekend was ‘best one overall’ (SECCountry)
quote:

LAKE MARTIN, Ala. — Auburn football’s annual “Big Cat Weekend” recruiting event has led to several high-profile commitments over the years for Gus Malzahn and his staff.

But the 2017 edition, which was held last weekend on Auburn’s campus, was a rare zero-commitment one for the Tigers. While some fans may view the weekend as a disappointment, Malzahn took a completely different view.

“Big Cat was awesome,” Malzahn said Thursday night at his Ambush Tour appearance with the Lake Martin Auburn Club. “There are three or four other coaches that have been through all of them since I’ve been back as the head coach, and they’re like, ‘This may have been the best one overall.’ Very successful.”

As SEC Country’s Benjamin Wolk noted last weekend, the Tigers hosted more than 30 prospects at Big Cat Weekend — and all had Auburn among their top schools.

While coaches want to secure commitments from blue-chip players as soon as possible, Malzahn said Big Cat Weekend — six months before the first signing day — isn’t built that way.

“You know it’s not really set up for that,” Malzahn said. “It’s more of a relationship-building, getting to know each other.”

Malzahn said the staff places a higher priority on on-campus events such as Big Cat Weekend over certain satellite camps.

This weekend, Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh and Ohio State coach Urban Meyer headlined a massive list of college coaches at the Champions Elite Camp in LaGrange, Ga. LaGrange is less than an hour’s drive from Auburn, but the Tigers didn’t send any coaches to the camp.

Malzahn’s strategy is simple — if recruits are close enough to go to nearby satellite camps, they’re close enough to go to Auburn’s campus for events such as Big Cat Weekend.

“If they’re close, we like to get them on campus,” Malzahn said. “We don’t want to have a situation where they’re right down the road and don’t come to campus. That’s important to us. We feel like we’ve got a personal campus. We really feel like that gives you an advantage.”

Malzahn said the Tigers won’t avoid satellite camps entirely, though. Several Auburn assistants are at the University of Memphis for a camp Sunday, and some attended a camp run by former Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin and Florida Atlantic earlier this month.

However, if recruits are within reasonable driving distance, Auburn wants them on the Plains. The coaches are encouraged by the recent success they had there with Big Cat Weekend.

“The way we left it, we feel great with where we’re at with the staff, and it’ll really pay dividends moving forward,” Malzahn said

Yep.

Doubt it based on info circulating around the program, especially if we lose both games to Bama & UGA for a 4th straight season. That would be a first in AU football history.

TBH Gus's long term security is being pounded hard on the trail by our rivals and I think it has taken a toll. I think it's why many recruits are Missouri on committing to AU before the season. Gus needs a double digit win season in the worst way to solidify some security.
