After winding path to Auburn, Traivon Leonard eager to impress position coach Greg Brown (SECCountry)
quote:

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Traivon Leonard finally had made up his mind.

During the early part of his college recruitment, the Oxbridge Academy defensive back had pictured himself traveling 30 miles south of his high school to play at Florida Atlantic University.

Then he’d wanted to don Carolina blue and white, committing instead to the Tar Heels.

Eventually, it was a connection to Auburn and secondary coach Wesley McGriff that led Leonard to make his final commitment to the Tigers.

And that’s when everything the 3-star defensive back had been counting on changed again.

“Four days later McGriff leaves,” Leonard recalled during a visit with SEC Country this week. “He was somewhat like me, energetic. I’m energetic. He called me the day after he was leaving and he told me to promise him that I was going to stay committed to Auburn.”

What McGriff couldn’t have known for sure as he prepared for his unplanned move to Ole Miss was that, even after learning the news, Leonard hadn’t questioned his choice for a second.

“I was still 100 percent locked into my decision,” Leonard said. “I knew I was going to stay committed to Auburn before he made that call. I was all in.”

The change may have sent other 3-star prospects into a downward spiral. But Leonard had a different reaction.

“I wasn’t stressed at all. I was kind of composed about the whole situation,” Leonard said. “My tape speaks for itself, so I just felt like all I had to do was communicate with Coach (Greg) Brown when they hired him.”

Leonard and Brown first spoke on the phone and then met in person in Palm Beach. As the two grew acquainted, Brown picked up on all Leonard had to offer.

“He’s got height. He can run, he’s very sharp,” Brown said while discussing Leonard at Auburn’s assistant coach media day. “He’s a self-starter. He’s all about Auburn. We can hardly wait to get him.”

And Leonard, who started playing football in the eighth grade, found even more to like in Brown.

Perhaps more importantly, Leonard appreciated the longtime coach’s experience, including his involvement with three former Thorpe Award winners.

It was unexpected, but it might end up being the best thing for Leonard.

“He knows his stuff,” Leonard said. “To have the opportunity to be coached by him is something I have to take advantage of. I was very excited about his resume.”

Leonard will head to Auburn after his high school graduation later this month, but he’s already developing his relationship with Brown — and that’s just one of the many things he hopes to build when he arrives on the Plains.

“Oh yeah, we’ve stayed on the phone for like two hours talking about coverages, talking about man coverage, zone coverage,” Leonard said. “He’s very detail oriented, and I like that because it rubs off on us. Now I just have to get there and impress him.”

Really sounds like Greg Brown is a details person. Every recruit mentions how he breaks down film with them and shows them stuff they have never really noticed before. Will be interesting to see how secondary looks this year

Auburn safety signee Carlito Gonzalez has hilarious nickname for secondary coach Greg Brown (SECCountry)
quote:

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — May the force be with the Auburn secondary.

Auburn safety signee Carlito Gonzalez is less than two weeks away from — finally — officially becoming a part of the Tigers. Gonzalez went through more coaching change than most during his recruitment, as he watched Will Muschamp, Travaris Robinson and Wesley McGriff take bigger jobs elsewhere after he committed.

All that turnover had Gonzalez intently monitoring Gus Malzahn’s secondary coach decision earlier this year.

When the choice was Greg Brown, Gonzalez quickly approved of the choice, but he had a funny first impression of his new position coach.

“Coach Brown came in, and now I’ve got Yoda,” Gonzalez joked. “He knows I call him that now. Me and my dad call him Yoda all the time. I saw him the first time and was like, ‘That’s Yoda right there.’ Plus he seems like he knows everything. … And I’m the Jedi. I can’t wait for him to teach his young sensei.”

Brown’s extensive resume protected Gonzalez from any recruiting doubts he started to have.

All he needed to see was Brown’s track record with three Thorpe Award winners. Gonzalez specifically mentioned HaHa Clinton-Dix and Landon Collins as safeties who have worked under Brown that he hopes to emulate.

In their early encounters, Gonzalez has been able to break down film with Brown, which has given him a whole new insight into how he’ll attack the game of football at the next level.

“No telling what he’s going to be able to do with me. He’s taught me so much already,” Gonzalez said. “He knows the exact point of where to stand, the exact timing of everything. When I get there, I know I’m ready for everything. He always says in order to be a great DB, you’ve got to work on a specific part of your game every day.”

“But, you know, it’s confidential because it’s Yoda teaching the Jedi.”

Gonzalez and Brown will be begin that more personalized teaching on May 28 when most of Auburn’s signees report to campus.

With Auburn’s lack of depth at safety, Gonzalez could be who Auburn calls upon early to make plays. Gonzalez said he and Brown have already discussed the openness of the position group, which could give Gonzalez and fellow safety signee Jordyn Peters a chance to shine as freshmen.

“He told me to come in and take someone’s spot,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez seems like a funny dude

Devan Barrett itching to get on campus, compete for playing time in crowded Auburn backfield (SECCountry)
quote:

TAMPA, Fla. — For Auburn recruit Devan Barrett, taking every precaution to stay healthy is nothing new.

“Ever since I was in little league my dad’s always just told me to take care of my body and all the little nicks you have after games,” Barrett told SEC Country during a visit this week. “You have to make sure you ice it down or get some Icy Hot, stuff like that. I’m focused on protecting myself.”

Barrett, a 4-star running back out of Tampa Catholic High School, was reminded of his dad’s warnings as he watched his soon-to-be Auburn teammates in 2016.

While the success of Kamryn Pettway and Kerryon Johnson stood out to Barrett, so too did the nagging injuries they had last season.

RELATED: Projected depth chart after Tigers’ spring game

Yet Barrett was not intimidated by the struggles Auburn’s top rushers endured during a difficult season. In many ways, it helped his transition to college football. Barrett believes he has an edge after seeing what can happen during a grueling SEC West schedule.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Barrett said. “I mean, people are going to get hit, you just have to brace yourself. I can’t wait to get my body ready.”

Barrett is also eager to see what else he’ll learn from Pettway, Johnson and Auburn’s other running backs when he arrives on campus at the end of May. Their credentials speak for themselves.

“I’m really excited. Pettway’s one of the best running backs in the SEC. He’s for sure up there nationally,” Barrett said. “He’s one of those running backs I can just learn from and hopefully he can kind of guide me through the process of my first year in college.”

Barrett is among members of the Auburn 2017 recruiting class who figure to have an eventful first year in orange and blue.

Pettway and Johnson are locked into the top places on the Tigers running back depth chart. Third is up for grabs, and it has added significance in 2017. Last season showed the Tigers and running backs coach Tim Horton the importance of quality running back depth.

Barrett also saw how injuries can impact a freshman’s season by paying attention to Nate Craig-Myers. The top wide receiver prospect in the 2016 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings, Craig-Myers fell victim to nagging injuries. Although he appeared in 11 games, Craig-Myers told media members after the season he played through a broken index finger and a bum hamstring.

‘It’s strictly business’

Former Auburn wideout and Tampa Catholic wide receivers coach Jeris McIntyre has seen Barrett preparing. It’s part of why McIntyre believes Barrett will have an opportunity to step in and contribute.

“You never know. Just depending on how the season goes, backs can go down, he can be in there. Backs can stay healthy and he’s the third guy,” McIntyre said. “You never know, but I think with his competitive edge, it’s going to give him a chance to play. He doesn’t know how much, how little, how quick he’ll pick up the offense and everything, but if he can stay healthy, it’ll be a little different.”

Playing as a freshman is not a foreign concept for Barrett. As a newcomer at Tampa Catholic in 2013, Barrett made an impact.

“He matured a lot over his four years here. He started as a freshman, which not a lot of people get a chance to do,” Tampa Catholic coach Mike Gregory said. “That speaks to his talent level.”

Gregory then saw what every high school coach wants for their players: progress.

“I’m not sure if he was mature enough to handle a lot of playing time early on, quite frankly, but he grew. And you could tell year by year a difference in his mentality. He continued to grow and it shows in how well he’s played the last couple of years.”

Barrett will take the same mentality with him when he travels to Auburn at the end of May.

“Some people just have that mindset of being that dog. I feel like I have that mindset,” Barrett said. “I have my mind set on going in there and playing. When I get up there it’s strictly business. I’m just focused on making that third position and getting ready to play my freshman year. This is what I’ve dreamed of so hopefully it’ll work out that way.”

I think Barrett will be the #3 back by end of season. Dude is a beast

Richard Gouraige talks Auburn interest, latest on Master Teague top 3 (SECCountry)
quote:

Top-100 offensive lineman talks Auburn

Auburn already has two offensive linemen the 2018 class. Both project as interior guys. The Tigers’ work continues for offensive tackles in the class. They’re shooting to take two exterior linemen in the class.

Auburn’s effort begins in an obvious place: 4-star tackle Richard Gouraige from Tampa, Fla.

Gouraige ranks as the No. 10 offensive tackle in the nation by the 247Sports composite, which makes him the No. 88 propsect overall. On Auburn’s offensive line wishes, Gouraige and fellow Florida boy William Barnes make up the Tigers’ top wants.

Gouraige has already gotten a taste of the Plains when he made a weekend visit earlier in the spring.

“I loved it. I don’t know if compact is the right word, but close-knit. The city was made for football,” Gouraige told SEC Country. “On game day, the community really supports the football team. The campus is beautiful. They love Auburn up there.”

Gouraige’s decision remains a long way off.

He doesn’t plan on playing the commit-then-decommit game. When Gouraige announces, that’s it. So he first wants to spend the summer taking visits and talking things over with his inner circle. From there, he’ll likely key in on a few official visit options and take those throughout the fall before coming closer to a final choice.

One of the main things Gouraige will look for: relationship with position coaches.

Auburn sits in a positive place based on that criteria.

“I want to be able to talk to a position coach whenever I want. I can relate to him. I want to know he’ll always be there,” Gouraige said. “Coach Hand, he’s a great guy. He just works on critiquing a lot of players and getting them to their greatest. Once you have great technique, you really can’t lose a rep. He just teaches fundamentals and works on great technique and every little thing.”

As a lineman for Cambridge Christian (Fla.), Gouraige has witnessed many prospects from neighbor schools leave the Sunshine State for Auburn.

The Tigers have had success recruiting the Tampa area in recent classes. In each of the last three years, one of Auburn’s best signees have been from nearby high schools. That’s something that isn’t lost on Gouraige, and it’s something Auburn makes a point to sell when recruiting guys from the Florida gulf coast.

“They have great connections over here to Tampa. A lot of Florida guys went to Auburn — Nate Craig, Devan Barrett, Byron Cowart. They all say it’s a family up there,” Gouriage said. “They really love it. You’d get to be around great people in the community. And coach Malzahn, he loves all his players. He checks up on them, sees how their family is doing.”

Auburn’s top RB has Tigers in top 3

Master Teague warned that a decision was coming soon. Now he’s one step closer.

The 4-star running back from Blackman (Tenn.) released a top 3 at 3:33 p.m. CT. That’s a lot of threes for the running back who dons No. 33 for his high school. The significance of all it goes back to Teague’s deep faith, which is a reason he feels a strong connection with Auburn.

“That’s the year and how old Jesus was when he died on the cross,” Teague told DawgNation. “So I was thinking that I want to just keep that number, play for Chris and make that number represent something.”

His list of three didn’t have any surprises: Auburn, Georgia and Tennessee.

South Carolina was believed to be in the mix, but the top-3 release included the home-state school, as well as the two out-of-state programs that have been trending for Teague in recent weeks. As the tweet above indicates, Teague only plans to do in-person interviews for the foreseeable future, so direct comments from him will be minimal over the course of the next month.

But SEC Country has been able to gather some information on Teague in the last few days. Here’s what I know.

- Auburn has always felt quite confident with Teague. In fact, multiple sources have told me for weeks now that the Tigers should be considered the favorites for the 4-star running back.
- Georgia has made a major impression lately. The Bulldogs continue to be a major factor for 5-star running back Zamir White, but Georgia wants to take both in its 2018 class, which would be an impressive haul.
- While Tennessee has the home-state push, the Volunteers best hope is that the Teague stays patient with his decision. To my knowledge, Teague hasn’t set an official commitment date, but the sooner he makes a decision, the more likely it is to be Auburn or Georgia — the two programs who have made the strongest push in the last few weeks.
- For Auburn, this offers some running back intrigue. The Tigers have picked up the pace with Asa Martin in recent weeks, and there’s also running backs of interest like Harold Joiner whose recruitments have been calm. Many of Auburn’s next moves will hinge on Teague’s decision, so the Tigers are hoping for a choice sooner rather than later.

Auburn OL commit Jalil Irvin recaps busy spring, future of Auburn class (SECCountry)
quote:

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — Jalil Irvin is always full of life.

The Auburn offensive line commit brings a jolly attitude with him to every interview he does. He shares a similar passion on the football field as he preps for his Stephenson (Ga.) spring game against South Gwinnett (Ga.) on Friday.

Irvin has been committed to the Tigers since March 8, but that hasn’t done much to quiet other coaching staffs on the recruiting trail. The Tigers have no need to worry, however.

“I’m all Auburn,” Irvin said.

Irvin spoke briefly with SEC Country following his practice on Thursday and provided an update on several things as they pertain to his own recruitment and the rest of the 2018 class for the Tigers.

In the video above, check out what Irvin has to say about the following topics:

- What does he expect from the big spring game vs. South Gwinnett on Friday?
- What did he do for his mom on Mother’s Day?
- How big of a role did she play in his decision to commit to Auburn?
- Which programs continue recruiting Irvin?
- What is Irvin’s message to those schools since he’s committed?
- What is his primary sales pitch to other Auburn targets?

5* QB out of GA. Currently committed to Penn State but no one thinks he will stick. Florida is the current favorite to flip him but we might be running #3. A true dual threat QB who can throw it 80 yards or run it 80 yards. Still not sure how good of a shot we have or not

Chip Lindsey was at Harrison today to see him. The ex got a picture with him when he was there.
We were very late to the game, but I think he was kind of an Auburn fan growing up.

I think he was too. Also plays on the Cam Newton 7v7 team, same one Quindarious Monday is on. I think we got a shot but long ways to go to flip em. I think it's interesting we haven't offered anymore QBs. Right now it's Harris or nobody

Why Auburn ‘always staying the same’ will help in race for exceptional athlete Richard Jibunor (SECCountry)
quote:

Richard Jibunor explains why Auburn is different

ATHENS, Ga. — Richard Jibunor will be the first to admit his naïveté when it comes to college football recruiting.

“For real, I don’t really understand it,” Jibunor joked with SEC Country. “Naturally, I love almost every school recruiting me.”

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound athlete from Athens Christian (Ga.) picked up football his sophomore season, a year after arriving at the school as a foreign exchange student from Nigeria. It didn’t take long for Jibunor to excel in the sport, and likewise, for college coaches to recognize the fast-rising prospect has a clear future as a college football player and beyond.

The recruiting process has been a delight for Jibunor. He has an uncanny ability to be positive about literally everything, especially with his many opportunities to play college football. Jibunor embraces all of these outstanding Division I options that have surfaced over the last year and a half.

But now comes the hard part. He has to differentiate one top-notch program from 15 other schools of the same caliber.

As someone who hasn’t grown up understanding college-by-college culture and history, Jibunor has relied on his own Internet researching, phone contact with coaches and campus visits to get a complete comprehension of each of the universities. It hasn’t always been easy to separate one from another.

Auburn has been one of the only programs to stand out — and remain ever-present — in Jibunor’s mind during the process.

“The Auburn coaches talk to me the same way that most of the other people do. But the thing is, some coaches speak up now that they’ve seen me this spring and compete against some of the top guys. Some coaches spoke up at the time and then slowed down. But Auburn has been with me since the day they offered me last summer,” Jibunor said. “They’ve just always been the same.”

Jibunor attended an Auburn camp last summer. At that moment, Kevin Steele, Travis Williams and Rodney Garner all decided they wanted Jibunor on the Tigers. They weren’t even, and still aren’t, 100 percent certain what position he’ll play, but they know they want Jibunor on their side.

His Auburn recruitment really began at that moment.

Since Auburn offered, the Tigers have remained a constant in Jibunor’s primary interests. He’s never named top schools specifically, but when he arrives at an official top 10 in the next week or so, Auburn will be a cornerstone of that list. Auburn’s dedication to Jibunor’s recruitment has made the Tigers one of the teams to beat.

When Jibunor was name defensive line MVP at the Nike Opening regional in Atlanta, who was the first coach to call and congratulate him? Garner. When coaches were permitted to come by during the evaluation period, who were some of the first coaches he heard from? Steele, Williams and Garner.

Jibunor hasn’t been oblivious to Auburn’s staff-wide effort.

“Coach ‘T-Will,’ he was at my school last week. Coach Steele was at my school this morning. Coach Garner talks to me a lot. They’re planning on visiting again this week. They said they want me. Auburn has never changed on anything with me,” Jibunor said. “Since the first day they offered me, they’ve been 100 percent on me and nothing has changed. We talk the same way, always have fun. Sometimes we never talk football. I like my relationship with them.”

I think LSU might be trying to get in on him too. Personally I think he will end up at the Buck position but could be a LB if he can't put on the 40-50 lbs he will need. Sound though like we have made him a clear priority

Richard Jibunor visits planned this summer

Jibunor knows he needs to gather more information before making a decision.

That’s what the next few weeks will entail.

The 3-star athlete finishes exams next week. Then there’s a month-or-so break before Athens Christian resumes with summer workout routines. He wants to use that time to visit as many programs as possible and close in on a final decision, which he hopes to have finalized before his senior season.

“I’m just going to travel around. I don’t care how far the school is. I just want to go everywhere I want to go,” Jibunor said. “By the grace of God, I’ll have a decision as soon as I’m done with those trips.”

The schools in contention for first-time visits: Alabama, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Louisville, Syracuse and Utah.

Alabama and Georgia Tech are almost guarantees. He has those lined up in the near future and both are programs that could become immediate factors. The Crimson Tide have been working to get Jibunor on campus for months now, so that’s definitely a visit to track.

There also are three SEC programs — Auburn, Tennessee and South Carolina — Jibunor expects to return to this summer, using his patented “by the grace of God” pretext to describe it.

“I’ll be very busy because this will be a very big decision for me. But I don’t want to be the type to commit and de-commit,” Jibunor said. “I want to be true to a school. I’ve been praying hard. When I take all my visits, whatever my mind picks, no matter which school, I’ll go with it.”

Another offensive lineman to watch

Here’s a quick bullet-point list of uncommitted offensive linemen Auburn has seen during the evaluation period.

- William Barnes
- Richard Gouraige
- Jalil Irvin
- Kameron Stutts
- Dylan Wonnum
- Qadir White
- John Campbell
- Jerome Carvin
- Trey Hill
- Tank Jenkins

And, based on the vigor Herb Hand has shown as a recruiter, that probably doesn’t even scratch the surface of the secondary, tertiary and future offensive line options Auburn has visited during the spring evaluation period. Many of those on the list are top-100 options and almost all of them fit into the top 20 nationally among their specific position group.

Let’s add another top-tier name to the list: Nicholas Petit-Frere from Berkeley Prep in Tampa, Fla.

Petit-Frere is the No. 5 offensive tackle in the nation, which puts him in the No. 55 spot among overall prospects. He holds offers from Auburn, Alabama, Florida, Notre Dame, Ohio State and 20 others. Hand attended Petit-Frere’s spring game on Thursday night, and he’ll likely stay in Tampa overnight for Gouraige’s spring game on Friday.

Auburn plans to add 2-3 more offensive linemen in the class, and the Tigers are loaded with options.

Top 100 recruit: Auburn in top group (247)
quote:

TAMPA, Fla., --- Richard Gouraige, the 4-star offensive tackle from Cambridge Christian and a top Auburn target, is a hot commodity. Many of the country's most well-known college programs have made stops at his school this spring.

That, of course, includes the Tigers, who he visited earlier this year.

Right now, Florida leads with LSU next but Gouraige, the No. 88 overall recruit in the country, said Auburn is just behind them (along with Clemson) and still is very much in contention. One reason for that: His relationship with the staff, primarily offensive line coach Herb Hand and running backs coach Tim Horton, his area recruiter.

The Tigers are "among the top," according to Gouraige. "I like Coach Hand. He's a real cool guy," Gouraige said. "I like Coach Horton. We always keep in touch with each other."

During his three-day visit to Auburn, Gouraige spent lots of time with Tigers running back Kerryon Johnson. From him, Gouraige got some insight into the program.

"He was telling me to take my time with the process, and (said) some coaches don't really care about the players but Auburn was the right fit for him," Gouraige said.

What has Auburn told Gouraige about its need for him?

"That I was their main priority at offfensive tackle," Gouraige said.

According to Gouraige, he thinks he's a good fit with Auburn.

"I can play in their offense," he said.

As for a commitment timetable, Gouraige doesn't have anything set. He'd like to visit Auburn and the other schools mentioned again this summer before he does anything.

You can hear his entire interview from the SEC Recruiting Buzz on VSporto. In it, he talks about each of his top schools.

Caleb Tannor, a top Auburn target at the buck end position, released a top 10 on Wednesday morning and it will come as no suprise the Tigers made the cut.

Also on the list: Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Mississippi State, Ohio State, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Of Auburn, Tannor told AuburnUndercover.com on Wednesday the Tigers give him a "great feeling."

Auburn offered Tannor, who is 6-feet-3, 225 pounds, in March and he visited them three times over a short period. We expect him to return for another vist sometime in the near future.

Tannor is the No. 18 weak-side end in the 247Sports Composite.

KN had an insider up earlier on 4* LB JJ Peterson. Here's summary

- Travis Williams & Chip Lindsey stopped by to visit Peterson this week. Apparently UGA and MICH coaches were there as well

- Once again T-WILL is the man. Peterson says the 2 have hit it off and Williams is the coach Peterson is closest too right now.

- He wants to get back to AU for a visit. KN later said that he plans on coming to BCW which is pretty huge

- Plans to commit later during his senior season. That's probably good news for AU who is chasing Bama right now

- KN says AU is trending up and is a solid #2. Bama still the leader so AU has work to do. UGA is trending down, in fact might be 4th on his list behind Oregon
