If we get a new OC like Helfrich we don't need either.

Malzahn is still going to have whoever the OC is run his offense for the most part. I love the use of a FB in the current offense, whirlybird notwithstanding. Eric Smith(we hardly knew ye) and Jay Prosch showed how a hybrid type fullback can add new dimensions to this offense. Just because a new OC is coming in, we're not going to just scrap that.

KN reporting that AU is trending up for 4* WR Oliver Martin. Apparently Burns visited him Thursday and the visit went real well. Although it hasn't been confirmed the AU staff is under the impression he will officially visit next weekend. Notre Dame, Michigan State & Iowa are considered his top teams but AU's staff feels that the Tigers are at least #3 right now possibly in his top 2. Another interesting factor is his younger sister is a big time swimmer and has a scholarship offer from AU, so could end up package deal. He is currently officially visiting Michigan State this weekend, if he doesn't randomly commit to them this weekend AU feels good he will be in Auburn next weekend

Would be a big pull for Burns. Martin had a really good week at the Army All-American Game. There's quite a few guys that if we can get visit next weekend we can start feeling better about: 4* WR Oliver Martin, 4* S Devon Hunter & 4* DE Markaviest Bryant. I also think we are still trying to talk 5* DT Aubrey Solomon & 4* S Tray Bishop into visiting that weekend as well. Will be interesting to see who ends up making the trip because basically all our commits will be there and we are trying to get all our top targets on campus at same time

I just had what alcoholics call a 'moment of clarity' when I realized that we're now recruiting kids that were born in the 2000's. What the hell.

KN has update on 4* RB Devan Barrett. Staff still feels real good about keeping him. Horton visited him and his family Friday and it went real well. He likes that we made him a priority for the 2017 cycle while Clemson is just now trying to push to get him. He plans on taking officials to Indiana & Tennessee but neither of them are legit threats right now. If he does officially visit Clemson it will be a midweek visit. As of today all signs point to him sticking with AU

SECCountry update on everyone's favorite OL recruit Poutasi Poutasi
quote:

Scratch that — Poutasi Poutasi first
He hasn't picked up an offer yet, but Herb Hand told him to be patient. This was Poutasi's first official visit. He also plans to take one to Ole Miss and potentially a mid-week on elsewhere. Auburn set a bar high, but without an offer, he doesn't plan to announce any kind of leaders until he approaches his Jan. 30-Feb. 1 decision.

Another SECCountry update
quote:

Kai-Leon Herbert and Alec Jackson soon after
They came out back-to-back-to-back. Only Johnston isn't out yet.

Biggest takeaways from Jackson: He loved his visit and is all Auburn. He may take an OV to Ole Miss next weekend, but will no longer officially visit Florida.

Biggest takeaways from Herbert: Michigan seems like an outsider despite his commitment. Miami and Florida will get OVS the next two weekends. Those in-state schools are probably the favorites.

KN has update on 4* OT Kai-Leon Herbert. AU made a big move with Herbert who is currently "committed" to Michigan though it seems a matter of when not if he flips. Spent plenty of time with Herb Hand but also hung out with Brodarious Hamm & Derrick Brown. Said he loved the family type feel and his family loved it too. He was shocked by news that UF OL coach had left so that could help us as that had been his leader. Plans to announce before NSD. Will visit Miami next weekend & Florida the final weekend

Overall sounds like visit went as well as it could. Still think we fighting uphill battle but we will see. Hand pulled Sammons late last year maybe he does it again with Herbert

Evan McCullers (247 intern) has update on 3* OL Poutasi Poutasi. Did not get the offer he wanted but had great visit. Said Hand told him to be patient and let the recruitment play out. Sounds like if he gets an offer he would commit which is probably why he doesn't have one yet. Had to post this quote tho
quote:

“They welcomed me with open arms,” Poutasi said. “All the players are nice. They’re not like snotty-nosed players. Nobody puts themselves above the others. Everybody puts the team above themselves.”

Hate those snotty-nosed players

Michigan commit Kai-Leon Herbert elevates Auburn interest after official visit (SECCountry)
quote:

Auburn hasn’t specifically laid out Herbert’s trajectory at the college level, but he thinks he can play tackle or guard. Most of those conversations took place with Hand who made Herbert feel comfortable with the Tigers’ offense despite no offensive coordinator on board right now.

“Coach Hand is a really good coach. The conversations I had with him, I can tell he’s someone that not only looks after you for football but also for life too,” Herbert said.

That launched Auburn firmly into Herbert’s top 4. He is a Michigan commit for now, but even on Sunday, Herbert showed some hesitance regarding his commitment before confirming he’s still committed to the Wolverines “until anything happens.” It appears Michigan will have trouble holding onto him, however.

Herbert has official visits sets up with Miami and Florida the following two weekends, but he might not have to wait all the way through those to make his decision.

“Miami and Florida. Auburn is definitely up there for me. I’m still looking at Miami and Florida. Those are two schools including this one that are at the top,” Herbert said. “I’m definitely going to commit before National Signing Day, if I re-affirm my commitment if I happen to choose Michigan. But I’m not a guy who does the hats. That’s not me.”

Auburn might been running in a distant fourth coming into the weekend. That has quickly changed with one official stop to the Plains.

“My entire family loves it. I love it. Just the way everything has been over here the last 2 or 3 days, it’s been really great I can say,” Herbert said.

247 has update on 3* DL Alec Jackson. Said visit was real chill and he felt at home. Staff has told him he could play either DE or DT. He's now working on recruiting for AU specifically 4* DE Ryan Johnson who he played with at the AL/MS All-Star Game

SECCountry update

Thomas Johnston update
Johnston just finished up. Gus Malzahn asked him to commit this morning as an H-back, but Johnston will wait to decide on Jan. 26. Auburn is the only school recruiting Johnston at fullback rather than his natural linebacker position. He said if he were to do it somewhere, it would be Auburn.

Interesting that we asked for commitment. Guessing we have Johnston over Lasater which I am not sure about. Lasater is supposed to visit next weekend and the thought has been he would commit then. Wonder if Johnston not committing today means we take Lasater instead. Will be interesting to see what happens in next 2 weeks at the FB spot

KN with a Thomas Johnston update. Apparently he hated the idea first of playing FB but went back and watched how much Chandler Cox played and has warmed up to it. He sees chance to play early as a backup to Cox and really likes AU. Gus point blank asked him to commit but he decided against it but likes the fact he has a spot at AU if he wants it. Says if he plays H-Back it will be at AU. Has top 3 of AU, OM & Iowa. Will officially visit Ole Miss next week then announce after visit. Also staff has no issues with him playing both football and baseball

I just don't see a guy who's got legit Power 5 offers to play the position he wants to play coming here to play FB... but we'll see.

He'd probably be great at it, if he committed 100% to it.

Auburn target Thomas Johnston hears H-back pitch, sets commitment date (SECCountry)
quote:

On Sunday morning, Gus Malzahn called Thomas Johnston into his office with a request.

Auburn is working to secure a fullback in the 2017 class to add some depth behind Chandler Cox at H-back. Johnston is known more for being a linebacker — Alabama’s all-time career tackles leader, in fact — but the Tigers are shooting to bring Johnston on as an offensive player instead.

Malzahn wanted Johnston to commit. Johnston wants to wait until Jan. 26, the date he plans to announce.

“Everybody else is looking at me as a linebacker. I also told them if I did play H-back in college, it would be at Auburn just because of what they do with them,” Johnston said. “Coach Malzahn told me that he wants me to play for his team. He wants me just to be around. He said I’m a fit for Auburn and I mean that says a lot. He asked me to commit this morning and asked where I stood. I know I’m at the top of their list right now so I’m excited about it.”

quote:

It might seem strange that Auburn wants Johnston as a linebacker, but he understands it. The Tigers have nobody behind Cox on the depth chart right now. A freshman would have the chance to play right away. Plus, with Johnston, they know he’s a gamer who would succeed at any position a football coach put him at.

But as someone with 675 career tackles, it might be tough to convince Johnston to play another position, especially on the other side of the ball.

So, why does Auburn have a chance?

“Just the way they use their H-back. It’s not just blocking. They have fun with them. They have different formations. They even line up at receiver every once in a while,” Johnston said. “That would be fun. I’m excited to see where God puts me. I’m just going to pray about it. He’s going to put me where I need to be.”

Guys I think the whirlybird is being used as a recruiting pitch or at least that's how I choose to interpret that comment

4-star Michigan commit Kai-Leon Herbert 'considering Auburn much more' (AL.com)
quote:

"It was a really good visit. It really opened me and my family's eyes," Herbert said. "Basically I was with Brodarious (Hamm) and Derrick (Brown), two freshmen that were here. The whole weekend was just a family-type feel. We went to Coach Malzahn's house, beautiful house. Played some games, fished by his lake. Everything was cool."

"My entire family loves it, I love it. The way everything's been over here the past two or three days has been great... Now I'm definitely considering Auburn much more than I would have if I didn't come."

Herbert spent a lot of his time talking with Auburn offensive line coach Herb Hand.

"Coach Hand is a really good coach," he said. "From conversations I've had with him I can tell that he's someone that not only will look after you for football, but for life too.

"Some coaches guarantee you a starting job, some coaches make you work for it. At Auburn obviously I'm going to have to learn from some of the older people. I'd have no problem if I had to redshirt or anything of that nature... I'm good with that, but I know I'm coming for a job."
