Auburn battles Oklahoma, LSU for 4-star backer (247)
quote:

What has defensive tackle Derrick Brown, a former teamamte of Tyler Taylor's, told the 4-star linebacker from Lanier High about his Auburn experience thus far?

"He told me that it's like one of the best decisions he has ever made," Taylor said. "And that the coaches really take care of you."

Brown, a former 5-star recruit, signed with Auburn last February. The Tigers hope Taylor will follow him 12 months later.

But it won't be easy.

Right now, Auburn and Okalahoma essentially are his co-leaders with LSU next. He's officially visiting the Bayou Bengals this weekend and Auburn the next.

Auburn has three linebackers commited and would like to add a fourth. It appears as though Tylor is the top target at the moment.

According to Taylor, he is etremely close both with Auburn linebackers coach Travis Williams and his Sooners' counterpart, Tim Kish.

"They've been consistent with their recruiting," Taylor said. "I really like them."

KN did a preview for this weekend's official visits

4* OT Kai-Leon Herbert - not solid to Michigan at all with UF & MIA possible landing spots. KN think he's high on the board considering he has an offer and is visiting. Staff is optimistic they can become a major player after visit

3* DT Alec Jackson - He grew up an AU fan as did his momma. He is expected to take other official visits but staff isn't worried and thinks he's pretty solid

3* OG Poutasi Poutasi - Former Louisville commit that really wants to play in the SEC (visiting Ole Miss last weekend). He has been to AU before but never met with coaches. KN says fact he is getting official visit means he passed staff's film eval but now they need to see if he is a good fit. He really wants an AU offer so it it comes he could be a commit watch

3* FB Thomas Johnston - Everyone else is recruiting him as a LB but the Tigers like him as FB. He's open to the idea because he really likes AU. KN says it's unsure whose ahead on the board Johnston or Lasater at FB they are apparently neck & neck. Johnston wants to also play baseball in college

KN in "What We Are Hearing" post

- AU is expected to remain a contender for 4* QB Joey Gatewood even without Rhett Lashlee. Gatewood really likes AU & Gus Malzahn so no matter what we should remain a contender & Malzahn plans on keeping Gatewood a priority

- Even tho we are in the home stretch for 2017 but staff is already working on 2018. AU is expected to host some top 2018 targets January 28th

- KN says we focus on recruiting rankings too much sometimes pointing to our OL recruiting. Yes all our remaining targets are 3* but they have been chosen over a guy like 4* D'Marco Hayes (UGA commit) who wanted to commit in the fall but we told no. AU is making sure they use last OL spot on a guy they really like and think fits

Auburn recruiting: Best-case scenario, worst-case scenario recruiting classes (SECCountry)
quote:

Worst-case scenario

This Auburn class would finish with a score of 254.91. In the last three classes, that’s equivalent to 13th, 14th and 14th in the team rankings. Reminder: don’t think of a worst-case scenario as a terrible concept. Worst-case scenario simply means missing on some of the top targets at key positions and finding a way to maximize a class uniquely.

It’s also intended to give a gauge of the furthest Auburn can realistically plummet with a underperformance in the January recruiting cycle.

Here are the five that wouldn’t necessarily boost Auburn’s class rankings:

- Jordan Tucker
- Marlon Williams
- Chase Lasater
- Thomas Johnston
- Poutasi Poutasi

quote:

Best-case scenario

This Auburn class would receive a composite score of 271.13. It would require some surprises, but that hasn’t stopped the Tigers from making recruiting splashes in the past during the Malzahn era. In the last three classes, that score would be equivalent to 9th, 11th and 12th.

That’s not substantially better, but it’s better. The list doesn’t include Henry Ruggs, who would give the class a significant boost. But he seems too distant from Auburn to realistically consider. The same goes for Solomon.

Here are the five that would give Auburn its best chance at a high-ranked class:

- Tyler Taylor
- Devon Hunter
- Markaviest Bryant
- Ryan Johnson
- Kai-Leon Herbert

Where Gus Malzahn, Nick Saban and other coaches were on first day of contact period (AL.com)
quote:

** Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn and running backs coach Tim Horton visited Scottsboro High, home of 2019 star quarterback Bo Nix.

** The Malzahn/Horton duo also visited Madison Academy, home of Auburn commit Austin Troxell.

FYI Saban & Jimbo both visited 2018 4* WR Justyn Ross it sounds like. Saban was also there to see Benton

Shaun Shivers reaffirms commitment to Auburn amid Lashlee's departure (AL.com)
quote:

As Auburn continues its search for a new offensive coordinator, Shaun Shivers remains solid in his commitment to the Tigers.

The 5-foot-7, 160-pound all-purpose back at Chaminade-Madonna Prep in Hollywood, Fla., took to social media Thursday night with an update.

"Yes I'm Still 110% Committed To Auburn #WarEagle," Shivers wrote. "BLESSED UP!"

Shivers committed to Auburn Oct. 26 and still has one season of high school football to play before he moves on to college. Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, Mississippi State, South Carolina, TCU, Utah, Virginia Tech and West Virginia are among the 20 offers he holds.

The only other 2018 commitment Auburn has is from fellow Floridian Joey Gatewood, a four-star prospect who is the No. 3 all-purpose quarterback in the 247Sports Composite. Gatewood is very close with Lashlee and reportedly called his move to Connecticut "heartbreaking."

Auburn to host small group of official visitors this weekend (AL.com)
quote:

Alec Jackson | 3-star DE | Commit

Jackson committed to Auburn on Christmas Day over Florida, Ole Miss and USC. He is the only commitment expected on Auburn's campus this weekend.

Jackson (6-5, 270) is Auburn's lone defensive line commitment in the 2017 recruiting cycle.

Poutasi Poutasi | 3-star OG | Target

The Las Vegas lineman holds offers from Central Florida, Louisville and Nevada and could add another from the Tigers this weekend. According to 247Sports, Poutasi has spoken with Auburn offensive line coach Herb Hand multiple times but has yet to meet him.

"I would love to play for him someday," he said. "He's telling me they need another guard. I think they have one spot left and he's recruiting a lot of guys for that one spot. Hopefully, I get it."

Thomas Johnston | 3-star LB | Target

The 6-foot-1, 215-pound Spanish Fort star is the Alabama high school record holder for career tackles with 675.

This will be official visit No. 3 for Johnston, who was at Arkansas Oct. 14 and Iowa Dec. 3. After Auburn he intends to take official visits to Arizona State and Ole Miss. His older brother, former Alabama Mr. Football Tyler Johnston, is at UAB.

Kai-Leon Herbert | 4-star OT | Target

According to 247Sports, Herbert will also take an official visit to Auburn this weekend.

The four-star prospect committed to Michigan in July, but Florida has made a strong push down the stretch. It's unclear at this time whether Auburn is a legitimate contender for his signature, but this visit should clear some of that up

Auburn's new coach Greg Brown hits the recruiting trail, visits Jordyn Peters (AL.com)
quote:

Greg Brown has hit the ground running as Auburn's newest staff member.

Auburn hired Brown away from Missouri last week to be the new defensive backs coach for the Tigers. The NCAA contact period ended Wednesday, and Brown was on the recruiting trail by Friday. He visited Muscle Shoals to spend time with Jordyn Peters, who committed to the Tigers in August 2016.

Brown was joined by Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele, and Peters tweeted out a picture of them with his mother to give fans their first look at Brown in Auburn gear.

"It was great for me to finally meet coach in person," Peters told AL.com. "He's a really great guy from what I've seen so far and will be a guy I'll love to play for."

Brown, who has coached the sport for 36 years including 15 in the NFL, worked with Steele at Alabama in 2013. He succeeds Wesley McGriff, who was hired by Ole Miss as defensive coordinator last month.

"His reputation for what he has been able to do with previous DBs is just a bonus. The visit went great just being able to see how him and Coach Steele interacted with my family."

Peters (6-2, 185) is a three-star prospect and the nation's No. 87 safety in the 247Sports Composite. He plans to take his official visit to Auburn Jan. 20, and will "most likely" take a visit Jan. 27 to Louisville or Virginia Tech.

A look at the top visitors in the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC and Pac-12... (Scout)
quote:

Devon Hunter, the nation's top safety and No. 5 overall prospect, is nearing his Jan. 20 decision, and a key visit takes place this weekend as he heads to Florida. In the spring, the Gators looked to have a very good chance to land Hunter, but North Carolina and Virginia Tech seemed to move to the top of the list. This is a chance for Hunter to re-connect with Florida. The interesting part is he was supposed to officially visit Auburn on Jan. 20, and Alabama on Jan. 27. However, with a decision coming, those visits are not likely.

quote:

This is the Florida Gators chance to make up some ground and try to keep Jarez Parks at home. Alabama is the favorite at this time, he visited the Crimson Tide officially in November, and it may be tough to beat them in the end, but Florida is a school still being considered. This is a big weekend for the Gators.

quote:

Could Markaviest Bryant pull the trigger this weekend in Athens? The numbers are getting tighter by the day at Georgia, he knows he is a top target and Georgia is at least in his top two. Alabama and Auburn are still in this race too, but Kirby Smart to show this Scout 300 talent why he should not leave his home state this weekend

quote:

Iowa City West four-star wide receiver Oliver Martin will be at Michigan State this weekend. The Spartans are one of the schools who are still heavily in the mix along with Notre Dame. Iowa, Oregon, Michigan and others remain as possibilities as well. The Spartans have one commit from Iowa, quarterback Rocky Lombardi, who has known Martin since they were kids and will be in town with him as well. Martin currently has no decision date set.

I highly doubt we get both. Only situation that would occur would be if we miss on Taylor so instead decide to sign Johnston as a LB. However as long as Gus is HC we will use a FB so we need at least one. I would prefer Lasater personally but will be interesting to see which one they pick

KN has insider up on our favorite cool guy DB coach Greg Brown

- Brown has been busy during contact period visiting 4* S Devon Hunter Thursday & 3* commits Carlito Gonzalez & Jordyn Peters Friday

- From all accounts the visit with Hunter went well. Travis Williams was with him as well and Hunter is still giving us a chance. Still no word on whether or not he will still officially visit and for now he still wants to announcing Jan 20th which would probably mean he picks the Hokies. Staff continues to stay on him and are trying to get him on campus

- Friday he went with Steele to see Gonzalez & Peters, both came away impressed

- Peters said he talked about his experience in the league & spoke about techniques with him. Peters said he is a laid back guy that jokes around. His mom liked him a lot too. Steele & Brown assured him nothing has changed and they still want him at AU

- Carlito Gonzalez was very excited after meeting Brown. Says Brown pulled out iPad with film of former players and talked through technique and coaching with him. Told Gonzalez he can recognize NFL talent but up to Gonzalez to use his talent. Feels he can learn a lot from Brown

- Both commits reaffirmed they are 100% committed and will both officially visit next weekend

Joking aside about Brown it does sound like he made great first impressions with everyone. Until Hunter confirms he will officially visit tho not gonna get my hopes up. If he does visit I like our chances. FWIW it sounds like he is really enjoying his trip to UF so maybe that will make him consider using all his official visits. We will see

I agree. Johnston has a knack for the ball and if goes to Iowa or elsewhere, will become a Luke Kuechly. I want to keep someone like him at LB.

If we miss on T. Taylor, we take Johnston.

Auburn offers Gators OL commit (247)
quote:

Auburn has offered 4-star offensive tackle T.J. Moore of Charlotte (N.C.) Mallard Creek, he Tweeted on Saturday.

The 6-feet-5.5, 290-pound Moore is the No. 30 tackle in the 247Sports Composite. He's also a Florida commit.

Moore committed to the Gators on Christmas Day. He will officially visit Florida on Jan. 27.

It appears he has no official visits scheduled next weekend.

We'll share more information as it becomes available.

Auburn has three offensive linemen committed and would like to add a fourth to the 2017 recruiting class.
