Talked to a bunch of sources on this. As I mentioned, Maryland heard these rumors today and this was something that has been building up for some time. There's a lot of pressure for Ashley to be a Terp locally and it's something even his parents have given a lot of thought into. They like Auburn a lot, but Maryland isn't out of this in the slightest. My stance this morning changes (obviously) only in the sense that he's not reopening today. There's a lot of buzz that he reopens and moreso now than before. I've been a lot more cautious about posting a lot of pro MD stuff with him because this will be the toughest recruiting win Maryland is working on in years and Auburn won't go down easy. As I mentioned, the staff is pretending that they haven't heard the buzz and are working the same angle as before. Ashley talked with Maryland tonight and everything is as good as it was before. Recruits were surprised as well. The thinking is that Auburn told him to take his OV and wait it out. As Keith reported, the Auburn staff spoke with Ashley this afternoon prior to his "110% committed" tweet
per the Maryland 247 writer that keeps saying Ashley will flip
Personally I think if we get him on campus January 20th we lock him up. He already has taken an official to Maryland. It sounds like he is telling everyone what they want to hear. If he makes that trip I feel real good about our chances

Calvin Ashley addresses commitment status (247)
KN says that you can't ignore the smoke coming out of the Maryland side of things tho AU people continue to be confident he sticks with AU. Probably won't be certain until his LOI arrives
quote:
Ashley, the No. 30 overall recruit in the 247Sports Composite committed to Auburn in May of 2015. But he moved to Washington D.C. for his senior year and visited the Terps multiple times this fall -- while never making it to an Auburn game.
On Thurday, the Tigers comunicated with both Ashley and his mother and were told his status hadn't changed.
Ashley is expected to officially visit the Tigers later this month.
Just minutes after Ashley's Tweet, Auburn offensive line coach Herb Hand took to Twitter.

Auburn 5-star offensive tackle Calvin Ashley sets record straight on commitment (SECCountry)
quote:
When other 2017 recruits commit to Auburn, Ashley is one of the first to welcome them to the family. He regularly shows his love for the Tigers during games.
As recently as last week, Ashley used cut-to-the-chase language to describe his commitment to Auburn.
“Very solid, very solid,” Ashley said. ” I just want to get back to my place. I want to get back to Auburn and have fun, hang around. Just get to used to the place again since I moved 13 hours away. I just want to renew everything.”
Ashley will make that return on Jan. 20 for his official visit, which is the only one he has planned in January. That weekend will be one of Auburn’s busiest during the contact period.
The team believed to be making the hardest push for Ashley was Maryland. The Terrapins visited Ashley as routinely as the Tigers did during the December contact period. Ashley took an official visit to Maryland on Dec. 9, the final weekend before the dead period hit.
Even then, Auburn managed to sneak in the final contact of the period with an in-home visit with Herb Hand and Scott Fountain.
“It was nice. Auburn came right after the visit. It was great for them to show the love,” Ashley said last week.” They came the last date of the deadline. That’s just family. We just hung around. It was great to have coach Hand and coach Fountain there. That was nice.”

Auburn linebacker commit T.D. Moultry ready to 'get the quarterback,' has high goals (AL.com)
So pumped for this kid
quote:
Jackson-Olin star linebacker T.D. Moultry is as solid to Auburn as one can be.
The 6-foot-2, 225-pound four-star recruit, coming off a huge senior season, is ready to translate his skills to the next level. The MaxPreps All-American had 133 total tackles, 68 assists, 10 tackles for loss, five sacks, six quarterback pressures, two forced fumbles and four pass break-ups, leading the Mustangs to the playoffs for the first time since 1999.
Moultry is in San Antonio, Texas this week for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. The game is on Saturday at noon CT and televised by NBC.
"I just want to compete and showcase for my city and my family and do what I have to and what I can," Moultry said Wednesday in San Antonio. "They're proud. It has been years since we've had what I'm doing right now."
Moultry is focused on Auburn. He'll make an official visit there on the weekend of Jan. 20. He expressed interest in seeing other campuses for the sake of travel, but not if they wanted to flip him. It's why most schools have backed off on recruiting the solid Tiger pledge.
"It is what it is, because like I told them before, I'm not a normal recruit," Moultry said. "If you want me, recruit me like family. Auburn did that. It's too late for anyone else."
Moultry is a talented linebacker who can also play a rush defensive end. He could fit in at the BUCK spot at Auburn after Carl Lawson's departure to the NFL.
"The linebacker coach (Travis Williams) says he wants me to get that quarterback because (Lawson) is leaving to get to the NFL," Moultry said. "We need somebody to get the quarterback.
"That's where they make the money at. I just want to play. If I have to get that quarterback, I'm going to get him."
From the get-go, Moultry has big aspirations at Auburn.
"To be as good as Takeo Spikes or better," he said. "They said that's the best linebacker who came out of Auburn and that was years ago. I just want to bring it back to Auburn."
So pumped for this kid

JUCO defensive end Daquan Newkirk set to be part of Auburn's 2018 class (AL.com)
quote:
Daquan Newkirk plans to be part of Auburn's class of 2018 with three years left to play.
The 6-foot-4 defensive end had to go to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College after learning he would not be academically eligible to play for Auburn out of high school at The First Academy in Orlando.
He was committed to being part of Auburn's 2016 class. Now, he'll be part of the 2018 class with three years left to play three. He is a four-star junior college recruit, per 247Sports.
Newkirk spent last fall as a redshirt and will have three years left to play three at Auburn, and he'll be a redshirt freshman for Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
"Update, I will be playing this season at Gulf Coast," Newkirk said in a direct message to AL.com. "I just finished my last test and passed."
Other class of 2018 commitments for Auburn include quarterback Joey Gatewood from Jacksonville, Fla., and all-purpose back Shaun Shivers from Hollywood, Fla.

KN had a recruiting insider up yesterday in between all the Ashley drama
- Apparently every weekend will have some good visits lined up but January 20th is the big one right now. 5* DT Aubrey Solomon, 4* S Devon Hunter, 4* DE Ryan Johnson & 4* Tyler Taylor also AU commits 4* LB TD Moultry & 5* OT Calvin Ashley
- New names are expected to come up in the coming weeks with most being 4* type of talent. Apparently AU's staff feels confident they are gonna close big and very happy with who they have on board already
- 4* LB Tyler Taylor is apparently a take. UGA has moved on with Rice & McBride on board. Right now Oklahoma is the biggest challenger but watch out for LSU right now. They are desperate for some ILBs so of those 3 teams they have the best playing time opportunity
- Right now AU is running #3 for 5* DT Aubrey Solomon with Bama & UGA ahead. AU has been rising though in the past month and will continue to push hard
- Apparently 4* WR Oliver Martin likes the fact that Burns is real young and played WR on a national championship team. We are working on getting him on campus for official visit hopefully on January 20th. Notre Dame & Iowa are his top 2 teams right now. He's been getting a lot of praise this week at Army All-American game
- The Tigers are most likely in 4* DE Jarez Parks top 4 tho the Tide are trending. He should officially visit January 20th. Says he is intrigued by AU whatever that means
- So the good vibes with 4* DE Markaviest Bryant are fading. AU is still running 2nd but it's clear that the Dawgs are the leaders. He is officially visiting them right after the dead period and there's a chance he commits after that. If he does the official visit is probably off but as of now he is expected to take that visit. AU will probably visit him the first day after end of dead period again
- If we miss on our top pass rushing targets (Bryant & Parks) it will probably just mean one of Chandler Wooten, Tyler Taylor (if he commits) & TD Moultry we will start off at the Buck spot
Not liking where we stand on the DL but Garner is a beast at closing so I am hopeful he gets one of Solomon/Bryant/Parks. If AU can keep Ashley & land Ryan Johnson should be a solid class. NSD is either gonna be a lot of fun this year or pretty miserable so basically every AU NSD ever

Also KN had update on 2018 4* DE Daquan Newkirk. He will be playing this season at Mississipp Gulf Coast Community College and is on track to graduate. Right now 247 has him as the #1 JUCO player next season. Curious to see what numbers he puts up this season in JUCO

Just like Under Armour game the Army All-American Game has a futures type of combine. Here's the guys that checked in yesterday that mentioned AU
- NR QB Gerry Bohanon has Arkansas State & Memphis offers but says AU is his dream offer
- 3* OT Justin Johnson says Pitt leads over Wisconsin & Vanderbilt who have all offered. He is expecting AU offers soon
- NR WR DeLonte Evans grew up an AU fan and would name us leader if we offered. He is hearing from SEC school Alabama, Auburn, Georgia and Kentucky but best offer right now is Indiana
- 2019 TE Ryland Goede has a top 2 of AU & UGA. Likes AU's coaches and campus. Sounds like we have been recruiting him for awhile
- 4* OT Williams Barnes has UF #1, UNC #2 & AU #3. Attends Chandler Cox's high school
- NR OG Ed Montilus is high on AU & UF. Has only a few offers but they include AU, UF, MIA, TEN & MIZ. He is also teammates with William Barnes
- NR LB Braelen Oliver has visited AU 3-4 times and has interest from us, Indiana & Purdue. Already plans to attend junior days at Georgia Southern & South Carolina
- 3* DE Andres Fox grew up a Bama fan but says if AU pushes would probably land him. Big kid at 6'5". Doesn't have Bama offer yet

Funny you posted this because I was just checking his Twitter yesterday. Notice that he still has "Auburn Commit" in the headlines. Is he considered a 2018 commit? Hope he continues to stay positive.

KN has update on Calvin Ashley: He isn't sure how close Ashley was to decommitting but staff recognizes that Maryland is a very real threat. Apparently 3 AU coaches (Malzahn, Fountain & Hand) all talked with Ashley yesterday & his mom. They heard all good things but Maryland's coaches talked to him last night and heard the same stuff. The problem we are facing is Ashley is dealing with a ton of local pressure. HIs OL coach has Maryland ties, UA CEO is a Maryland alum and an alum from his high school. He has teammates that are gonna play there next season. Basically every day they hear about how he should go to Maryland. The staff feels though once they get him back on campus it will help lock him in. KN says who gets the last in home might prove crucial as well. It will be a battle till NSD but AU's side still feels confident we finish with Ashley

It is looking more and more like last year was an anomaly as we are regressing to the norm.

That's what I fear as well.

The Cowart/Holland and Brown classes come to mind as great DL finishes. All were NSD pickups
Not sure we can call last year an anomaly if that's the case

'13 we locked in Lawson and landed Adams and Daniel
'14 we closed with Lambert and Russell
'15 we closed with Cowart, Tega, Holland
'16 we closed with Brown, Jackson, Coe
Even if we don't close strong on the Dline this year (I don't think we will) it's certainly not an anomaly

Cowart didn't ever consider us before Muschamp showed up.
I fail to see your point

Lawson and Adams were akwzys coming. So he got stuck-em-up Daniels

Russell was a great close. Lambert was one of the worst DE to ever play at Auburn recently. Awful scouting job.

So yes, last year was the anomaly. Thanks for doing the leg work to prove it.
