Kareem Canty- He is our "Marshall Henderson". When he plays well, he is fire and we dominate. When Canty starts forcing things and doing bad, our team struggles hard.
He is definitely a boom or bust guy. Would like to see him makes some better decisions passing but I will live with his aggressive play. Just nice to have a playmaker at PG
quote:
Tahj "TSD" Shamsid-Deen - Great defender but his offensive game is just solid. Problem is his game was "solid" as a FR and whether shoulders or otherwise hasn't developed
Agree completely. Love watching him play D because he is very smart with his hands & moves his feet exceptionally well. Having him back really helps our defense. Wish he was bigger so we could put him on guys like King when they are lighting us up
quote:
TJ Dunans: If he could develop a jumper/3pt shot, he would be near impossible to defend with his driving ability.
Would like to see him get more aggressive. I thought against Colorado he could have tried to create a little more. We need him to be a double figure guy in SEC play
quote:
New Williams - Most thought he'd be last guy in line, he looked good in exh + UAB. Hopefully he can stay healthy long enough to contribute and develop
Don't think he played against UAB. Very excited to watch his development if he can stay healthy
quote:
TJ Lang - With his MCL sprain/brace, he is basically only useful as a 3PT shooter. Unfortunately, depth issues forces him to play minutes instead of rest
You can definitely tell his knee is bothering him. When he is 100% back I like him as a 6 man off the bench (this is if Purifoy is cleared). Also glad his pretty shots are starting to fall. Felt like last season he would should some beautiful shots that would rattle out
quote:
Jordan Granger - If he can find his 3 shot again, he looks great coming off the bench as a plug in play at wing or post. The weight gain looks like an improvement
We FINALLY get to use him correctly. We have had to use him as a 4 sometimes 5 man & expect points from him. Now he can go out there & play solid D, hit the occasional shot & rebound. I expect a solid senior campaign from him
quote:
Tyler Harris - Way better in the post than expected considering Providence used him as stretch 4. Shows some hesitation from inexperience down there, but has some good moves and works hard for rebounds.
Love watching him play. He just understands how to score the basketball. Needs to work on his defense though. Past 2 games we have been eaten alive downlow
quote:
Cinmeon Bowers- He actually looks good driving to the basket. Somehow he got worse at layups. And Rebounding. And Defense. And doesn't pass (which he was surprisingly good at last year)
Cheering hard for him to have a productive senior year. When he's on AU is hard to beat problem is he rarely is on. If anything would just like to see better defense & rebounding from him. I have lost hope he will ever shoot free throws well
quote:
Devin Waddel - Better minutes but I still wish he wasn't relevant to this post.
agreed
quote:
Horace Spencer - Plays like he has springboards for shoes. Great defender and surprisingly useful on offense when not at FT line. Needs to work on technique for blocking (going vertical not over) and rebound positioning.
Spot on. Don't think he will ever be a 20+ pt guy for us but I think he could leave AU as the career shot block leader if he learns how to position himself better. Just nice to have a presence down low that forces opponents to alter their shots
If we can get healthy & eligible for SEC play we can compete with most teams this season. The constant foul calls hurt our back & forth style of play though so hoping those calm down moving forward. Love the athletes on this team now we just have to get better at keeping poise throughout the game & finishing halves. I am still keeping my expectations at an NIT berth for this season with hopes that we can work our way in as a bubble team. Either way this team will be really fun to watch

I think being comfortable in the offense is his biggest limitation. UC also had some good rim protection going on as well
quote:
TJ Lang... You can definitely tell his knee is bothering him. When he is 100% back I like him as a 6 man off the bench
I really like Lang, but I think being a 6th man will always be his best role. When healthy he hustles and is a legit 3pt threat. That is a weapon coming fresh off the bench
quote:
Harris... Needs to work on his defense though. Past 2 games we have been eaten alive downlow
Got to remember that Colorado will have one of the best front courts we play. When you have a Josh Scott who shoots 55% FG and extends to 15ft, backside help D gives up wide open 2pts.
quote:
Bowers - When he's on AU is hard to beat problem is he rarely is on.
If Bowers could make layups, he would be a match up nightmare. Post defenders really struggle to stay in front of him. His layups aren't wide open but are "good opportunities"

pot on. Don't think he will ever be a 20+ pt guy for us but I think he could leave AU as the career shot block leader if he learns how to position himself better.
Maybe not 20pts, but he has the tools to be a legit offensive weapon with 3 years of development. Unlike say Rob Chubb who can't catch a basketball, Spencer's lack of post game is an indication of lack of development/practice. If he can develop a solid shot (#ChuckPerson) and some post moves that leverages his athleticism he will be legit.

@AuburnOvertime: I was just told Danjel Purifoy has been cleared.
I'd tap the brakes on this one. If this was true we would have heard something official by now. It isn't exactly the type of news that we would sit on.

I have no idea how I managed to pull a Brannigan here

Agree with you assessment. The only thing I don't like about Canty on the offensive end is he takes too many early shots from deep. It's part of his game so I don't mind 1 or 2 a game when he is hot but as a pg he needs to get other players involved in the offense more. He can take those same shots later in the shot clock if nothing else is available. I wish he was a little more intense defensively. He has the quickness to bother ball handlers but he hasn't been as engaged on the other end of the court so far.
I wish we wold run our offense through Harris in the high post a little more. He is a great passer and could really take our offense to the next level.
I really like the make up of this team. We bogged down and started playing a little too much 1 on 1 in stretches against Colorado but I think that is to be expected when we have so many players that have never played together. They are going to get a lot better with each passing game.

Is there any idea what kind of OOC record and what conference record we will need to be a bubble team?
I figure we can't lose any of the gimmes. We should beat Coastal Carolina this time around. I figure we'll also need a good showing at the Hawaii tournament.

With our schedule, if we don't have any bad losses and can manage 2 or 3 wins over top 50 RPI teams, 20 wins and above .500 in conference should put us on firmly on the bubble.

With Bruce's name that would put us in the tournament

Have you watched any Georgetown games past couple years? They essentially set a high ball screen but in a somewhat unique way (as in I don't see it often). They pass the ball to the C at the top of the key then do a handoff pass + ball screen to a scraping guard.
It causes fits for defenses because the defender doesn't have time to go under and guard the 3 and a good screen makes it impossible to trail effectively. If the post defender switches, the C is open to roll towards the hoop.
Tyler Harris would be dominant running that with his athleticism, passing and driving ability

Based on last year, we almost for sure need 3 wins. Only two teams to get in without 3RPI wins were UGA (0) and Ohio State (2). Ohio St did clean sweep of RPI 100+ schedule while UGA Ls were to top 25 teams + really good road team
I don't know where multiple top 50 RPI wins would come from is my issue. I see the number being close to 7 top 50 RPI games and I don't know if I see us getting 3 wins from there
Xavier
Kentucky 1x
LSU 1x
Vandy 2x
TAMU 1x
Maybe one of Ole Miss UGA 2x
Potential to play BYU & Oklahoma if we in Hawaii

Bruce Pearl said today that there has been a good development on the Danjel Purifoy front. The Tigers received a favorable ruling from the NCAA that he will be able to stay in classes at Auburn and be on scholarship this year. The coach said there is still no resolution on when the freshman guard will be cleared to play in games for the Tigers.

This is huge. If he would hav ehad to leave AU, there is decent shot we don't get him back.

If the ACT doesn't close/reaffirm ACT, we won't play him. I imagine Rig's point that if he is cleared is by first semester grades makes sense
Posted on 11/19/15 at 7:07 pm to GenesChin
so the thought is if he has good grades this semester we can tell the ACT people to frick off, and he can play after grades are posted.

Hopefully that's that thought that the NCAA says hey, if you can get grades in college you probably have academic requirements

OT a little but, just got back from the girls basketball game against the Cavaliers of VA, and it reminded me of a high school game. Worse coaching job ever..Flo will be gone after this year.

Yep the Coach Flo project has destroyed what Fortner built. It's incredibly sad
