Atlanta United 1st Game (CONCACAF)

Lost 3-1 to Herediano (Costa Rica). Could only listen to the radio broadcast, but it sounded like Atlanta was flat, unorganized, and out of sync. Not completely surprising given that this was the first game of the year and Herediano has been playing competitive matches for a couple of months now. Still it is disappointing because on paper Atlanta United is better than Herediano and they got whipped.
Obviously they have to figure out how to play with some new faces, Pity Martinez in particular. Also surprised they started Bellow (who just turned 17) on the road in a CONCACAF match. Not really sure how he played (didn't sound great on the radio). He's got promise and I guess throwing him out there is one way to develop him quickly. Might should have saved him for the return match at home though.
Atlanta has to win 2-0 or 4-1 or better to advance outright. 3-1 Ar=tlanta win goes to penalty kicks to break cumulative score tie I think. A bunch of scenarios Atlanta is eliminated (any loss obviously, any draw, 1-0 win, 2-1 win, 3-2 win, 4-2 win, etc). And you know Heredia is going to bunker on defense the whole game. Eliminated first round of CONCACAF would be very disappointing.

Had some moments on offense where we looked really good. Those were pretty few and far between though. When they were on though, it looked like we could absolutely destroy Herediano. Props to the Costa Rican team though, they took advantage of their opportunities and we didn't. Josef had a point blank header that he should have scored...there was an insane goal turned offside that would have been a goal if guys would have just communicated. And in normal bitching fashion...that ref was complete trash last night and made it perfectly clear that we were going to be concacaf'd as a team from the US.

He actually called it pretty evenly for both teams. I don't think we were prepared for how it was to be called at the start, but they adjusted.

ref wasn't bad
I think it's clear that we are going to miss almiron BIG TIME...Pity is going to be great but Josef was great because Miggy set him up perfectly all the time. Miggy was selfless and the defense had to worry about him more than anyone and he stretched the D with his speed. You can tell with Miggy going to the EPL and being an immediate impact player...
hope the team can get in sync but I'm guessing the offense won't thrive like it did the last two years with Pity and Josef competing for shots on goal

I mean, you are still wrong about the first game. Didn't get to watch last night, so I'm not commenting on that.

CONCACAF stands for
The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football.
It's the association that governs/includes the various soccer leagues in North America, Central America and the Caribbean.
They have a yearly CONCACAF Champions League tournament that pulls from the top teams from the various leagues in the confederation to crown the champ. Not sure of all the rules for the various leagues to send their participants but obviously ATL UTD was the MLS champs and there are a couple of other MLS teams that got in as well based on last year's accomplishments.
I think I heard that an MLS has NEVER won the tournament.

CONCACAF is our continental federation with FIFA. The same as UEFA is for Europe, CONCACAF North America.
It stands for the Confederation of North, Central American, and Caribbean Association Football.
UEFA (Europe), CONMEBOL (South America), CAF (Africa), AFC (Asia), and OFC (Oceania) are the other confederations.

Atlanta actually qualified 2 ways for this year's competition. NYRB qualified because Atlanta won the MLS Cup.
quote:Not since it has been called CONCACAF Champion's League (since 2008). DC won it in 1998, and LA Galaxy won it in 2000 back when it was called the CONCACAF Champions' Cup (1962-2008).
I think I heard that an MLS has NEVER won the tournament.

The winner of CONCACAF Champion's League qualifies for the FIFA Club World Cup.

Last night was legit awful, whether you agree with me about game 1 or not.
*ETA*
Just as an example (I'll try and find highlights) Barco was on a break away from just beyond midfield. Around the 18 dude pulls him down from behind by his shoulder, then slides through him (from behind) to get the ball. Complete denial of a goal scoring opportunity, Easy yellow card, possible red card the way it was done...no call at all. Didn't even think about blowing the whistle. That was just one of the many blatantly missed/ignored calls from last night

This shite is complicated. Sorry I am only 2 years into bamdwagoning and it is still hard as balls to figure it all out.

Sounds like they also missed a golden chance to give LGP a red card, so call it even?

Atlanta can essentially win 6 trophies:
Supporters Shield - Most points during the MLS regular season.
MLS Cup - Win the MLS playoffs.
US Open Cup - Available to any US professional or amateur club.
Campeones Cup - winners of MLS and Liga MX play each other in a one-off match.
CONCACAF Champion's League - Qualify by winning the US Open in either of the previous 2 season or win the MLS Cup in either of the previous 2 seasons. If the same team holds 2 of those spots, then the team with the most points from the 2 previous regular season will take the vacated spot.
FIFA Club World Cup - Qualify by winning CONCACAF Champion's League.
We can win a 7th if you want to count the trophy for winning the Eastern conference final.
