"It's not about a love or hate fest. A poor hire is a poor hire.

If he's the best BB could get then ok, but don't pee down my leg and tell me its raining. Statistically RS runs circles around him, but we don't know why BB didn't promote RS. I'd like to know why."

Because, statistics.

RS probably not the best abbreviation in this case.

I understand the love for Randy Shannon and all, but we don't have a Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Jonathan Vilma or Sean Taylor.

quote:

Statistically RS runs circles around him

From 2003-2008 Smith' defense at Maine was the #1 defense in that conference

In 2012 Rutgers fielded at top 10 scoring defense, pass defense and rushing defense

he then left for the NFL and the Rutgers defense went in the tank.

I wish HIV would do research before being stupid.

Because Ed O had a deep DC resume.

Do the idiots really think Butch Davis would take the job?

Of course, but at the very least they expect him to be offered and Arkansas to be publicly turned down to prove a coach "tried" to hire a "legit" candidate.

Being reported on a pay board that Randy Shannon and CBB both though Shannon would be more valuable to the team if he wasn't the DC so he could spend more time recruiting. Shannon will probably be named Assistant Head Coach which I'm guessing will put his salary around 400-425k after making 315k this past season.

Randy Shannon will be promoted to assistant head coach, Robb Smith will be defensive coordinator. Randy Shannon considered the DC job, but both he and the head coach thought he could help the staff more by concentrating on recruiting and helping Robb Smith.

Why is there so much hate for Smith? I don't get it.

He got a very valuable year of the NFL under his belt, and his one year as DC at Rutgers was legendary in that conference and at that school.

That Rutgers D in 2012 is exactly what we want at Arkansas.

quote:

It's a defense that is relentless, aggressive and tenacious.

It's a defense this program surely will miss.

quote:

Rutgers ranks in the top 25 nationally in four major defensive statistical categories: scoring defense (fourth, 14.3 ppg), total defense (14th, 321.3 ypg), pass efficiency defense (25th, 115.35) and rushing defense (11th, 105.0 ypg). Rutgers also is tied for fourth nationally with 18 touchdowns allowed and tied for the fourth fewest rushing touchdowns allowed.

Rutgers is holding opponents to the fourth-lowest single game rushing average since 1950, allowing only 105 rushing yards per game. Only two Rutgers teams (1976 and 1964) have held opponents to less than 100 yards per game since 1950.

A season of firsts, too: Rutgers held Temple to 191 yards of total offense Oct. 20 at Lincoln Financial Field -- the first time in school history the Scarlet Knights have allowed less than 200 yards in a Big East road game. Then against Cincinnati, Rutgers allowed only three points -- the lowest point total it has allowed to a Big East opponent on the road.

Is it because he isn't some big name splash hire, but instead a coach with a solid as frick background that makes you think "Meh shite hire"?

I remember that D like it was yesterday and not just because we played them. They were physical as frick and knocked the shite out of you. Punch you right in the mouth hard nosed and made you want to quit. They absolutely destroyed people on that side of the ball, including our shitty arse 2012 team where they beat the shite out of Tyler Wilson like a rag doll.

My point exactly, guy can coach some defenses.

Like I said, I get it most want the Randy Shannon name as DC, could he get the same results with our players that he got with multiple pro bowlers and future HOF'ers? Most likely no.

HIV thinks Bielema passed over Shannon, guy wouldn't be here right now if he wanted the job and didn't get it.

I've heard Shannon is here to recruit and recruit only so I hope Smith is as good as advertised (2012 Rutgers D) and will help us play calling/schematically.

Yep, Shannon didn't want it.

When he takes a DC job in another year or two, it won't be at Arkansas and won't be because of this.

By the same token you could ask if Smith can do the same thing against SEC offenses that he did against Big East offenses (for 1 year). He also has no experience in the south whatsoever and I don't see him being any better a recruiter than Ash was. I just don't see what this guy's done that puts him above Barry Odom.

He's an underrated recruiter, in 3 years at Rutgers he was the lead recruiter for 13 signees.

And why the hell would Bielema wait until NOW to name him? He could have been named the day after Ash left. He's fricking unemployed.
