No the qb never takes a step backward to meet the back out of the pistol he pivots as the back comes down hill. I think you maybe confused what the pistol is because the offset gun and the pistol is two different things. In the pistol the back is right behind the qb like an I or single back set. And I agree the defense can’t predict the direction from the I but that’s not what I said I said the defense can predict what side it’s going when your in the gun more. Now that’s not really true with our offense because of the zone read anyway but for teams that don’t have a mobile qb but still primarily run their offense out of the gun, the pistol helps them not let the defense know the direction of the run. You see if you don’t ever go under center and you want to run some plays that work well from the I you can do so out of the pistol go look at what Oklahoma did alot under Lincoln Riley or okie state does with gundy. They both run a lot of pistol with an Hback offset the qb which equates to a fullback and can run plays like old school power that you’d run out of the I. If your just asking why we don’t run bobby petrinos offense I can’t help you there

I don't know the terminology, the veer, spread, power spread, whatever they call it. I just think putting the RB beside the QB gives away too many advantages and cues to the defense. I'll be the first to admit, it may be nothing more than us not doing it well, because we don't seem to execute much on either side of the ball.

Our running game is our strong suit, but it would seem to me that someone would realize there must be a problem with it, since it doesn't seem to do anything for us in the red zone. Seems like our OC would take note of that, and change it up in some way, so that it doesn't seem like the defense is in on our huddle in critical situations.

yeah that’s the shotgun not pistol and I agree it gives away some of what you can do. I really liked the under center formation we used last year that Dominique got the ball in some like when he scored against Texas. Think that might be useful to go to more in short yardage

QBs are told to finish out their motions for things like that. Guys will hand the ball off and then pull and throw an fake pass out like a bubble screen in order to hold any guy who would be free.
