Well you know, that massive carelessness to do that damn much damage, I find it damn hard to be the least sympathetic, especially since they are trying to hide how it happened. Sue the bejesus hell out of the contractor. Sorry just doesn't cut it, especially when they obviously aren't.

To be that careless is a real concern. They managed to shatter a giant hunk of stone. It isn't like they backed over some flowers or something.

Someone who is careless enough to do that has no business doing construction work on a crowded college campus.

100% their contract should be terminated, and they should be sued for the entire cost of repairing the rock, as well as punitive damages for being that careless on university property. I would imagine one or a few of the physics/geology professors could get together and figure out exactly how fast they must have been going to damage it like that.
