I trust Jeff Long, even though I admit he is not infallible, to make a better coaching hire then someone throwing their money around because "gosh darn it, I played high school football with this guy".
Based on Long's hiring patterns across all sports we will either land a big name no one suspected, or he'll go with a young up and comer. Outside of football and men's basketball he's shown a taste for hiring young coaches and letting them develop.
This is a prime example of low expectations/someone who has settled/ and a person that has a ‘everybody should get a trophy mentality.
It’s a losing way to go through life and it should be shamed at every opportunity.

This all sounds well and good, but I don't think he can fix this shite in anything less than two years starting next season.
He will have to fire Kurt Anderson bare minimum and most likely fire Herb too. These two coaching replacements present a particular problem as both these two coaches need extensive time with their players to develop/coach them to a respectable unit. Complicating matters is we lack depth on the offensive line apparently. So you need to add a couple stud recruits on the offensive line and red shirt those guys and/or not expect them to get much playing time for at least a year.
I haven't looked at our recruiting in a bit, but I'm curious how many offensive linemen he has committed.
Point is, if he can present an actionable plan to Long that's fine, but from where I sit not getting rid of him now is tantamount to giving him another 3 years minimum to restart his rebuild. 5 damn years in.
If that's what the brain trust thinks is best, it's whatever, but I have a strong feeling fan support will be out the window by the end of this year.

He offered the most tepid endorsement possible for Long, primarily rooted in the fact his last two full time hires for football were decent to big name hires on paper.
It’s not a stretch for someone to say they trust Long to make a better hire than some of the Uncle Rico’s in our GOBN who hitched their wagon to Nutt last go around and have shown more than a few times that they don’t know jack shite about football.

i'm not 10000000% sure anderson has to go. Ragnow and Dutch have developed nicely under anderson the last 2 years.
I think on the o line, we are still puttiung the failures of pittman, on anderson. ti's not anderson's fault that we had to play 2 walk ons on the o line or play rameriez.
I mean
o line is something you can only fix with recuriting and patience.
herb has to go tho and any plan that does not start with herb leaving shows me that bret doesn't get it

i would sit Bert down and tell him look, I like you, and i want to keep you here, and I'm going to give you the opproutnity to stay here, but you have to come up with a game plan, and present it to me, a plan of action, to get us from where we are now, to where we should be. I want to know why we are where we are, I want to know what you plan on doing to fix it, and I want to see you step by step take action to fix it.
If he can do that, swallow his ego, admit his mistakes, and fix them, I have no problem with him staying.
This is reasonable if the coach is in year 3-ish and things don't seem to be working, but we/CBB have had enough issues and failures by this point in year 5 that we've seen what he thinks the corrective actions are and they STILL aren't working. It would be one thing if the struggles just started and we were at or near our ceiling before that, but the fact of the matter is what we're seeing now is his attempt to right the ship.
You can call the man all the names you want but he's not dumb enough to believe 6-8 win seasons are the spot where you stop making changes to improve further. That's not to say that he wouldn't make another attempt at changes if he stuck around because he most certainly would, but if the man thought he had an answer as to what might "fix" this team he would've done it long before now. He just doesn't know what it is that he can do better, and he'd be the first to tell you that in private.
