My guy Bartoo uses the offensive and defensive efficiancy metrics as one of the key stats on what makes teams good.

National title winners since 2000 have all been top 3 in either Def. Or offensive scoring efficiancy for the year. The metric doesn't care what style of O or D your play, just how efficiant you are at moving or not moving the ball on each play. Just look at all the ranked teams in the top 25.

The top 25 overall team efficiancy rankings include a few potential coaching candidates.

Top 25 in team scoring effic thru week 11

#1 OSU
Alabama
Clemson
LSU
Oklahoma
Navy
UCF
Georgia
Penn State
Utah
Oregon
Iowa State
Auburn
Wyoming
Wisconsin
Memphis
Florida
Notre Dame
Minnesota
Baylor
Iowa
Louisiana
Michigan
Appalachian St
#25 UAB

Takeaways: Bill fricking Clark can coach folks. UAB has no business being with those other teams at a recent death penaltied school.

And the fact that Matt Campbell has Iowa State that high is pretty amazing. He's better than Gus with 1/3 of the talent.

Also look at ULL and Billy Napier. That guy is going to be a star. He recruits his arse off, has deep SEC experience and can apparently coach like hell.

The best of the best (Saban, Urban, Dabo, etc.) all can both recruit and coach up the talent they have brought in.

Here's a tidbit on Kiffin, who Bartoo is not really a fan of:

jumped out at me. Top 25 in both off and def effic last 4 weeks. Wow and nice

The guy took a team that didn't exist for 3 years and got them to six wins in the first year and 11 wins in year 3. That is incredibly impressive. Decent chance he ends with 9 or 10 wins this year. He isn't the sexy hire at all but might be the best coach for what we need right now.

I've heard a few detractors claim that Clark's knock is that he has no signature wins, despite a sterling record. I posit that it doesn't matter when you're at a program as dismal as UAB - just beating all the other nobodies is an amazing accomplishment. That aside, Mike Norvell also doesn't really have a signature win, but that doesn't stop everyone from clamoring for him. He took over a program that he didn't build himself, and he's beaten two P5 teams with losing records so far. That's like the SJSU coach calling us a signature win. Unless SMU stays ranked and he beats Cincinnati, he hasn't had a win over a ranked opponent in all of his four years at Memphis.

This wasn't to detract from Norvell (who I think is a good choice), but rather to build up Clark, because it aggravates me that some want Norvell and Kiffin so hard, but completely dismiss this other amazing coach who seems to be 100%, to the T, exactly what we need on paper.

Clark isn't the "sexy" hire this year, sure. But people are starting to notice, and if he doesn't get hired at the end of this year, he's going to be next year's Norvell or Herman or Fuente. Mark my words. The man is a rising star, and we could have him for dirt cheap compared to someone like Mike Leach or Lane Kiffin.

If Auburn kicks Gus out, he will be a very serious candidate for that job. Many Auburn fans already want him above all others.

They have the edge over us in that he's done every ounce of his coaching in the state of Alabama. Couple that with the fact that Auburn is a better football program than us, historically, and it's important we get the jump on him. He'll murder it at Auburn, guaranteed. The last thing we need is to not only whiff on Bill Clark, but also have to face him every year at a program with good upside.

It really is fricking disheartening. Alabama has the CFB GOAT, LSU is always a menace, A&M has an NC winning coach, and Auburn could hire what should be one of our top three targets out from under us. The stupidity in hiring Chad Morris has fricked us over not only in the ways that are immediately obvious, but also ways that are critical when you look at the moves everyone else is making/has made.

It just feel like Clark has no shot of getting the Arkansas job when his resume just screams he is exactly what you need right now.

I feel the exact same way. It's frustrating that people act like Norvell is the second coming of Football Jesus, when Bill Clark has objectvely accomplished just as many impressive things in the same span of time. If somehow Chad Morris' resume had what it took to wow our boosters and ridiculous administration, Bill Clark's should be causing an orgasm.

But, hey. Lane Kiffin is mouthy on Twitter and not afraid to slay poon. That's what the recruits like, right? He must be the man for the job, despite his massive shortcomings that have taken him from the head coach of USC to FAU.
