frick Mike. Beard went out and recruited 10 people and improved UALR by 17 wins in one season. Mike and his suitcase of excuses can take a hike. Beard can coach his arse off. Throw a check his way before he's snapped up by another decent program not stuck in the basketball mindset of 20 years ago.

He is a good coach. A proven head coach.

He made in game adjustments yesterday that won them the game.

I'd be ok with beard

But a few points

1. Our program was in a worse spot when Mike took over than where UALR was when beard took over
2. Mike just had his first down year after progressing every year he was here
3. Mike is bringing in a bunch of jucos next year, like beard did this year.
4. Would be interesting to see how Mike's team this year would have done against UALR's schedule.
5. Next year is basically make it or break it for Mike.

UALR won 13 games last season....and they're fricking UALR. How do you recruit there? There's no arguing your other points, but to say the University of Arkansas basketball program was worse off than a 13 win UALR program is...just no. I'm not sure I buy the schedule thing, either. We lost to fricking Mercer and Akron. Not to mention UALR just become the first Sun Belt team to EVER win 30 games in a season. Beard needs to be brought in before he's taken. He's not going to be free long.

I'm talking about the thug recruits pelphrey brought in, the environment he created, and really the corner he had us in with roster management. Mike wasn't able to dump the rotten apples.

Beard lost three guys due to arrest.

UALR was a dumpster fire of mass proportions.

Mike didn't just forget how to take teams deep into the tourney like he did at UAB and Mizzou.

Beard just won his first NCAA tourney game.

The big picture and not just one year says Mike's the better coach

One year?

Beard has been a head coach for 6-7 years and has a win pct. of 77%.

Ok.

Was Beard handcuffed by roster management issues like Mike?

Beard is handcuffed by being at UALR.

He had no roster and built that team from scratch. It doesn't get any more dumpster fire than that.

Stan Heath did well the year before he came to Arkansas.

I'm going off NCAA trips. Big difference between where he was and now being in the big leagues.

Still too early to determine how good Beard is imo. Some program able to take the risk on him should. Basically a program like we were when we hired Stan Heath.

Mike

Mike's been a head coach since 2002 and took Mizzou to one Elite Eight and took UAB to a sweet sixteen. 5 times since he's become a head coach has he failed to make a tournament at all, and two of the years his teams only qualified for the NIT. So in 14 years he's missed the NCAA tournament completely 7 times. During his time here, he's been once in 5 years. Mike didn't forget how to take teams deep into the tourney because he never knew how in the first place.

His last 3 seasons as a head coach, he is 77-19
His last 4 seasons as a head coach, he is 96-29
His last 5 seasons as a head coach, he is 126-31

Those numbers aren't by accident.

He coached under Bob Knight at Texas Tech. He has been a head coach at the pro level, and college level.

He's not going to be the head coach here next year so I really don't see the point in arguing.

That's a shitty comparison

Stan Heath had exactly one year of head coaching experience when he was hired at Arkansas.

Agree.

Though, it's a disservice to Beard to compare him to Stan Heath.

Although people with zero basketball knowledge would probably attempt to make that comparison. As seen in this thread.

Do you realize how small the pool of coaches is with the same accomplishments as Mike?

Trying to hire someone with a better resume than Mike would be really really hard. Not saying Jeff couldn't pull a rabbit out of his hat, I just don't see it happening. Where our program is right now we can't afford to take another Stan Heath or pelphrey risk.

Heath also stepped into a team that had made the tourney the year before at Kent St. his hire made no sense whatsoever, other than the fact that he was a hot name off a hot season.
