How good does our defense need to be to win the SEC? This is what we should be discussing, because history suggests that it needs to be one of the best in the nation.
Petrino came close, with I think the #36 defense. It takes both offense and defense, obviously. I think it's harder to put together an elite defense than it is an elite offense, which is why I've been making this case for a week or better.

I agree with you. Fielding a decent offense isn't difficult in today's game, but the same can't be said about defense.

Just for the hell of it, here's the total offense and total defense stats for the SEC-W for this season, sorted by where each team finished.
Team - Offense - Defense
Auburn - 11 - 14
Alabama - 33 - 2
LSU - 35 - 13
MSU - 42 - 10
TAM - 4 - 59
Miss - 21 - 115
Arkansas - 99 - 103
A&M was 4th in the nation offensively and finished 5th in the SEC-W.

I've looked at a lot of these numbers, for several years back, and what I've posted is true, with few exceptions. It's especially true in the SEC.

Remind me where did we finished when we had one of the best defenses in the SEC/nation in 2014?
You’re oversimplyfing a complex equation.

You are doing exactly what you claim I am doing. In 2014 we played 6 ranked teams, plus a Northern Illinois team that ended up 11-3 and ranked also.
We've had good offense with mediocre to bad defense in Petrino, and we had one year of good defense with mediocre to bad offense with Bielema.
I've never said it doesn't take both sides of the ball, only that it is very rare to win it all without a top 10 defense.
