and imo we got as far as we realistically should have last year. Everyone on this board would have taken 2nd round of the tourney at the start of the year.
Yet he gets zero credit.
If we suck this year, well then that's another story.

We currently have a former NBA COY who coached in the fricking NBA Finals. That is better than anything on Pearl's resume.
Yeah, he's not included in "previous hires" Avery is a good splash and while I wish he had more recruiting experience before coming to Bama, he's certainly exceeded expectations.
Gregg Marshall would have been a great hire regardless, I'm content with how things turned out though.

And the team we lost to steamrolled their way to a title

How do ya’ll see this season play out? If he doesn’t make the tournament do you think there is a chance he is fired? I’m asking this without a smart arse answer to reply with. I’m honestly curious as to what someone who has a better grasp than I on the basketball program thinks.

No. He won our first tournament game in over a decade last year and has what looks like another good class coming in.
I will seriously doubt him though, and I think it will put a lot of pressure on year 5. One tournament in 5 years could warrant firing even though Grant left the program pretty bad.
I haven't liked the play of Avery's teams on offense, but his teams have exceeded my expectations each year.
Year 1: Expectation- bottom 2 in the SEC and a losing overall record, Reality- made the NIT
Year 2: Expectation- middle of the pack in the SEC with a possible NIT bid, Reality- finished 5th in the SEC and made the NIT
Year 3: Expectation- First round tournament exit, Reality- Second round tournament exit
Year 4: Expectation- First round tournament exit, Reality- We'll see

I doubt he gets fired unless we just suck arse this year. Depends on who you listen to for outlook. Joe Lunardi has us as an 11 seed in the tourney. The SEC will be a meat grinder this year as Auburn, UK, and UT are virtual locks for the tourney and State is looking much improved and is the initial poll I think. Georgia hired Crean, Missou is in year 2 of Cuonzo, and Vandy is year two of Drew, as is LSU with Wade if he doesn't get the NCAA hammer. All should be better, although Missou lost a key player to injury. A&M, Ole Miss, and USC aren't expected to do much and UF took a butt whooping by FSU last night already. Might be a rough year in Gainesville, but it's too early to tell.
I feel like we'll put up a similar record and similar bubble watch as last year, when we had to play our way in the last couple of weeks of the season. If we get in, that buys Avery another year. If we don't, then the embers under his seat begin to glow. His name has been mentioned in connection with the Cavaliers opening. We'll see how serious that is or if it's just internet chatter.

I think some people underestimate the job Avery has done building the roster because Grant's last season was okay due to a solid group of veteran players like Levi Randolph and Rodney Cooper.
If Grant had still been the coach Avery's first year, we would've seen a 2013-14 season repeat at best.

If I'm correct, that was Releford's senior year. Guy was playing his arse off, only to get stuck with the most lethargic offense in basketball. There were times I wondered if Grant even practiced with a basketball.

Unfortunately, investing in AAU coaches is probably what you need to do. There's a reason Will Wade and LSU are fgoing to go from the bottom to near the top in a couple of years.

how do you invest in an AAU coach? Wouldn't that violate NCAA rules?

But...but...Nike, Adidas, and Under Armor do it. The big, successful schools like Arizona and Kansas do it. Why can’t we invest in AAU coaches too?
Can’t wait to see if the NCAA actually uses the evidence that held up to federal jurisprudence and hammers some of these programs or do they just turn a blind eye.

There was a time when the city of Birmingham supplied many great players for Bama but those days are over. Like it or not Pearl's success at the Barn is going to bring even more pressure on Avery to have success. JMO but making it into the NCAA tourney is a big deal and winning 2 games is about Max.
