Really good question. You are definitely gonna piss off the "don't question the goat Saban" and "how many games have you coached" crowd but I am with you.

Saban is not infallible. He's human like the rest of us and he makes mistakes. But I think a lot of people here have short memories because there have been A LOT of big games against equal competition where we have come out fast and loose and dominated from beginning to end.

This post wasn’t really about halftime adjustments or Xs and Os. It’s more about how he seems to wait until we’re in danger of losing before he releases the hounds. He starts putting the best players on the field. He starts calling blitzes. He starts playing aggressive pedal to the metal football, instead of trying to play conservative, controlling football.

I think some of you made some good points about him just being a conservative guy, but perhaps against these high powered offenses, he needs to come out guns blazing for 60 minutes. We can’t play the boa constrictor, dominant defense game anymore (for obvious reasons). We’ve gotta go all out from the first play. Send those exotic bltizes on the first damn series

Most of the examples given of him playing fast and loose in big games happened well into the contest. Sure, he takes a gamble every now and again and I think he's the GOAT, but the earlier in the game it is, the more we run base stuff on both sides of the ball, to keep it conservative, famlliar, and to see how the other team responds to things and mostly importantly, not to make a big mistake. He will probe for weakness and tendency and later in the game try to exploit it, but the probing is usually very safe and conservative. When is the last time you saw Bama try a high risk, high reward play in the first couple of drives? I think he's a big proponent of momentum and tries to keep Uncle Mo on our bench, especially early. Witness Tua's unforced fumble Saturday. It was very deflating to the team, and took some of the starch out of Bama for a good while.

Then how, pray tell, are other teams so easy to adjust to us prior to halftime?

Do you have some examples in mind? Last time I checked, since 2010 Bama hasn't lost more than 2 games in a season; if so many other teams adjust so easy to us in-game, it doesn't appear to be working well enough for them to actually win the game...
