The Saban and others like him essentially tried to stack talent. However the title years under Saban had a tendency to have freshman class hitting hard and winning a title the year they arrived or their sophomore year.

2008 => 2009 (Julio, Ingram, and so many others)

2012 => 2012 (Yeldon and Cooper being the difference between a really good offense and excellent one)

2015 => 2015 (Most of the secondary were freshmen, Ridley ended up being crucial when Foster went down)

2017 => 2017 (The freshmen were crucial to winning the CFPCG in the 2nd half)

In the aughts and teens, the accepted model was to always stack talent so you had a base of veterans but you'd hope to hit the lotto and have a handful of freshmen elevate your entire team.

In the modern era, I don't think you can ever build a deep enough roster where a handful of day 1 contributors are the finishing step for a champion. However, it is arguably more critical to be playing freshmen in today's environment because freshmen will ride the pine out of town these days.

I think worrying about redshirts is a fool's errand. You're not likely to enjoy saving that year of eligibility for an athlete, so you might as well be playing them. Our staff just did that with AK Dear by the way. They burned his redshirt year in 2025 for 1 pass reception in the Iron Bowl that may have been his only participation in that game to boot.

I think the dynamic in the modern era is to hope you can line up a team with a nice base of sophomores, juniors, and seniors you invested in from day 1 and hope you can supplement gaps with junior or senior classification transfers. You're going to be playing freshmen - and will need to at least rotate them generously with the starters to keep them invested - but you shouldn't be hoping for high schoolers to fill in your gaps like Saban and others did in prior to the transfer/NIL era.

Wanted to throw this out here. Clint Kubiak is the OC that replaced Grubbs in Seattle and the team has received 5 requests from teams to interview him for a HC position.

So, I guess Seattle has a highly sought after OC.

Kubiak did a much better job with essentially the same roster but arguably worse at WR and about a wash at QB.

This is my biggest knock on him. I think a really good OC could have figured out a scheme to run the ball with the OL pieces at Bama. He can go to his blocking scheme when he gets the correct players

Darnold is better than Geno IMO.

And as far as WR, losing Metcalf may have been the best thing that could have happened because it arguably allowed JSN to flourish and turn into the best WR in the league. And they added Kupp.

Kupp is sorta old and busted now. He's been a decline ever since that WR triple crown season when they won the Super Bowl. JSN becoming a top receiver is really carrying a lot there because they don't have a 3rd WR.

I am still concerned about red zone running.

Red zone running? We can't anywhere on the field. So always having 2nd and 9 or 10 instead of 2nd and 4 or 5 is crippling and limits your options. Also, when you have 3rd or 4th and 1 yard to go, Grubb ends up running some stupid shite because we can't just line up and run and pick up one measly yard.

He and the offensive assistants need to do a better job of coaching on the practice field. Watching this team try to run the football...it looks like they aren't coached a bit on the practice field. OL can't run block for shite, and on the rare occasion when there is a hole, RBs are slow to hit it and go down on first contact.

Grubb said "I've done everything I know to do" when asked what could he do to get the running game going. What an answer from you OC.
