UNC won't join until the following is aligned...

UNC
Duke
Clemson
GT

.... then the SEC would officially be unbeatable as the lead conference.

UNC could care less about Duke nor are they tied together. They would still play each other in BBall no matter what conference they are in.

Locally here the word is NC State may try to move with them and some state politicians want this as well, but UNC could care less. I say this as I know a handful of coaches at UNC very well.

The other programs to watch are UVA and VT as both bring in new TV markets. VT has a big market in the DMV area.

In the end UNC wherever they end up it will not depend on someone else.

The two Texas schools are top public schools. UNC is not too good for the conference UT Austin is in.

I am confused by this. UNC and UVA are ranked higher for academics over the two Texas schools currently in the conference.

I don’t know why you would be? The point is that the SEC’s academic prestige is fine and improving as athletics prestige brings in more high dollar value out of state students.

VT would be a better cultural fit than UVA. However, for them to be at least competitive in the SEC, they would need to massively improve their facilities and start getting serious about NIL. From what I've read, there is a lot of internal debate with their BOT as to whether or not the school wants to seriously up their game.

There are some on their BOT who would be content to see VT eventually become a G5 school because they don't want to spend the money. I get the impression they're like Arkansas minus the facilities the Hogs have. Pretty much zero NIL game. Arkansas, while pretty well coached, struggles to MAYBE get to 6-6 each year. VT would suffer the same fate unless some minds are changed on their BOT.

UVA would probably never come to the SEC. Great school and in a pretty part of the country but a terrible fit culturally. Most of their students are from up North, especially New Jersey. They have arrogance on a level that makes Texas look meek and mild. I could see them going to the Big Ten and I'm pretty sure that's where they'd prefer to go.

I say this because I've read it, know some UVA grads and actually grew up about 30 miles away from Charlottesville. I used to catch a couple of games each year. Tickets were usually pretty easy to get. They are NOT serious about football. Basketball, yes. Football, no.

I think UNC can add that in a few sports like basketball and baseball, which in turn helps the conference.

I agree here and would be better for expanding the TV markets.

Outside of FSU and Clemson that could be said about every ACC school to be honest.

So many on the Rant seem to think UVA would be a great fit and not sure how they see it that way. With that being said one of my daughters' top choices for school.

The original UA campus design was based on UVA’s, so I guess there is something there.

Charlottesville is a weird town. I worked there a number of years ago. While I realize most college towns are liberal politically, Charlottesville is like Berkeley on steroids in that respect. So many people with some very weird and extreme ideas.

No different than here in Chapel Hill. Both have college town feel to them and nice campuses

Tuscaloosa is more liberal than its surrounding areas but not to the same degree because the locals are so staunchly conservative. North Carolina and Virginia are purple states so their flagship college towns are less mediated by the position of the locals.

I cannot speak to Charlottesville, but you seem unfamiliar here in this area where you only have to go 20-30 minutes outside of CH/Triangle and it is as conservative as the majority of the deep south.

CH/Durham/Raleigh the majority of the population is not from NC, but everything around is very conservative and rural.

There is no way UVA comes. That AD dept is destined for the AAC or something similar.

Also, what Amarillo said.

VT is the sleeping giant here. Huge potential but need to decide if they want to “ play ball”

This is a good point. UA seems to have more faculty who are from the Deep South.
