Anthony Grant won over 20 games here three years in a row. 25 in 2010, 21 in 2011, 23 in 2012. We still only made the tourney one of those years because the SEC was down and we had a very weak OOC schedule.

Anyone else think we would've won 20 games last year with Nate Oats as our coach? We won 18 with Avery Johnson and were one win away from the tournament.
I feel like we would've made the tourney easily last year with Oats as the HC.

I’d like to see him coach for Bama before I can make a declaration like that.
I’ve seen folks that said don’t overreact if the first year doesn’t go well, but I think the more likely scenario is we do pretty well and call Oats the second coming. I feel like everyone was gung-ho for both Johnson and Grant after a couple years but by year 3/4, we could all see it was just a matter of time until they were fired.

With the talent we have the expectation this year should be to make the tourney, If we don't that will be a bad sign.

In my opinion, we'll be very lucky to make the tournament. I don't care about last season and winning 18 games with a non existent coach. This is a brand new team learning a brand new system.
Transitions are tough, and first years often don't get wonderful results, no matter what talent the coach has.

That would be a bad look on Oats then who already said he thinks we will make the tournament this year.

It won't be a bad look. You're setting yourself up for a big disappointment. There are always growing pains. The team might have bought in to the system, but they could easily revert back to old ways when things start getting tough during games.
Oats can't predict, if the guys we have, will miraculously start hitting 3s.

I think one key will be the buy-in. If the guys have fun and get enthusiastic about the new system and just play loose and play hard, we could be formidable. If they struggle and think too much and don’t play well, it might be a rough year.

There aren’t always growing pains. He made the tournament his first year at buffalo, weren’t growing pains there.
Chris Mack had a very good first season at Louisville last year. Look at what Kermit Davis did at Ole Miss last year.
Every year there are new coaches who have good seasons at their new school and most of them don’t have three top 40 recruits on their roster.

He had been at that school as an assistant coach. You can't compare this situation to his first year at Buffalo. First year at Alabama and his first year at Buffalo are nothing alike except for the fact that it's his first year

That's 2 examples. Now give the first year coaches that didn't do very well

A slight concern for me is year 2 not being quite as good as year 1 for whatever reason and then having the fair-weather basketball fans being complacent or negative about the program.

I was responding to you saying there are always growing pains by showing you two recent examples where the teams did much better with their new coaches than they did the previous year. Those were off the top of my head, I can find a lot more if you want me to.
A lot of times teams with good new coaches do better than they did the year before when the coaching was subpar and the coach was fired.

Arizona State

15-18
20-12
23-11
There are growing pains for coaches too, when they move up to big time basketball

Yes. I just good more than anything we turn it over less an shoot FTs better.
I know there are gonna be games where the 3 ball aint falling and we will look pretty bad. We need to give Oats at least 4 years to get his guys.

Oats followed Hurley and here was his first 2 seasons, at a school he had been an assistant coach at

17-15

And then you have a coach like Kermit Davis who in his first year in "big boy basketball" took a ole miss team that was 12 and 20 the year before he got there, to 20 and 13 last year with an NCAAT berth.
Every situation is different, to say every new coach has growing pains isn't true, a lot of the time the team does better with the first year HC than they did with the one who was fired.

I agree with this completely. We are going to miss Hall tremendously, even though he disappeared at times.

Well, go ahead and set your expectations too high, and I don't want to hear "Oats sucks", when he doesn't reach your unreal expectations for a first season. He needs time
