I assume with us recruiting him this hard that Mack isn’t coming back?

I think we have a great shot at him, he said he wants to play fast, and Oats system seems to fit his style perfectly.
I thought Arkansas was our biggest threat and they just added a transfer guard a week or so ago.

Probably isn’t coming back. We don’t lose a lot of production with him leaving, but I hate to think about what he could’ve done under Oats. If he’d just stay and give this staff a chance....

Mack seems like he would benefit more from a slow paced type of game. Id rather have Herb on the floor locking guys down anyway.

I’d take Quinerly all day over Mack anyways, even tho he’ll have to sit a year

Mack leaving will probably open up a lot of minutes for Alex Reese who would probably be a better 4 in this offense than Mack. He is just as good of a three point shooter and a better rebounder.
I do think Jones would get more minutes at the 4 than Reese due to him being a lock down defender, but Reese will get his share if Mack leaves. I think the style of play Oats brings may benefit Alex Reese more than anyone on the team not named Kira Lewis.
I still hope Mack comes back, but if he doesn't I think we will be fine. We have a bunch or players that can play the 3/4 positions. Where we are hurting for depth is at 1-3, Shackleford and Forbes are gonna have to play a lot out of necessity.

We looked like a completely different team when Mack played well. Both times

If Mack comes back I think we see one one of our big guys transfer. Oats typically only plays one big on the floor at a time and we have 4. That's not including Reese, who in a pinch could play the 5 but he is skilled enough to play outside the three point line, and I think he will.

I agree losing Mack isn’t the end of the world, but he’s just as good a fit if not better at the 2/3 as he is a 4. I also agree we aren’t hurting for depth at the 3/4, but I definitely don’t think that’s the case with 1-3. Lewis, Bolden, Petty, Jones, Rojas, Shackelford, Gary, and Forbes. That’s pretty deep. Where we’re very thin is 5. We have some guys that can play there, but no one that stands out as even an SEC-average play at the 5 (at least right now).

Hawkins, Davis-Fleming, and Smith are our only bigs outside of Reese, no?

Oats likes to play really fast, and play 3 or 4 true guards on the floor at once, we don't really have the guard depth to do that.
Rojas, Jones, and Gary probably won't be 3's in this offense.
Bolden, Lewis, Petty, Shackleford, and Forbes are the only players on our team I would consider true guards, we are a bit thin there.

Rojas and Hawkins will probably play the 5. Hawkins is listed as a center, and Rojas is probably gonna be our starting big man this year.
They aren't typical big men, but Oats likes his big men to be able to run the floor and shoot well.

Jones is much better suited to play a 3 than 4. If we’re going to waste his on-ball defense at the 4 position we might as well go with a better shooter at the 4 IMO. Also, while I’m confident we’ll play Rojas and Gary more at 4 than 3, both seem very capable of sliding over.

I can see Rojas playing some at the 5, but the guy is listed as a 3 on recruiting sites. I’d say Reese is much more of a big, and the guy I’d put money on being our starting 5.

Jones would be a great 4 in Oats system, he has good height at 6'7 and is a good enough defender to defend players bigger than him, but is still athletic enough to handle the ball and run the floor.
He is no threat to shoot the three and isn't a great ball handler, he led the team in turnovers, hard to see him playing the three in an Oats offense, but I've been wrong before.

Rojas played 5 for his JC team and is where I think Oats recruited him to play for us. He isn't a small guy, he is 6'8 220.
In oats offense the 3 isn't played by a forward, it's played by a guard, even the 4 is played by a guard in his offense a lot of the time. This is why his teams are able to play so fast without turning it over a ton. Rojas is definitely a 5 in his system.
