Al.com wrote an article that says Kentucky is lucky we didn't have Sexton and Petty today. They said we only lost by 5, so imagine what we'll do to them next year. ? LINK

Also an NIT championship would put us at 24-14 (10-8) and it would likely require us beating a couple big name schools who miss the NCAA tourney. That would be a great year 2 under Avery and would give us a ton of momentum going into next season along with our top 5 recruiting class.

LINK ]Kentucky's lucky Alabama can't fast-forward one year | AL.com
quote:

Kentucky had De'Aaron Fox and Malik Monk.

Alabama didn't have Collin Sexton and John Petty.

That's what separated those teams Saturday in the SEC Tournament semifinals. That was the difference between a Kentucky team that hopes to go on to bigger and better things Sunday and beyond and an Alabama team that's a year away from making some real noise.

The surest way to win tight, sweaty postseason games is with great guard play. Kentucky has one of the best backcourts in the country playing this season, and Alabama has one of the best backcourts in the country coming next season.

So more than anything, bad timing negated a fantastic effort by the Crimson Tide. It's hard to guard against serious optimism for the future despite Kentucky 79, Alabama 74...

Fox, the cat-quick 6-foot-3 point guard who was the No. 6 national recruit in the Class of 2016, and Monk, the smooth 6-3 shooting guard who was No. 11 - according to the 247Sports composite rankings - played like it Saturday. Monk scored what was for him a casual 20 points, but it was Fox who stole the show.

He scored a career-high 28 points, nine of them in a row at crunch time, when Alabama was threatening to beat the 'Cats in this event for the first time since 1983 and advance to the finals for the first time since 2002.

One sequence in particular helped put an end to Alabama's upset bid. The Tide stood within three points with 3:30 left when its terrific freshman forward, Braxton Key, went to the line for three free throws that could've tied the game. But the charity stripe hasn't been kind to this team all season, and it happened again. Key missed two of his three attempts.

Still, Kentucky led by only two until Fox went Kyrie Irving at the other end. The UK phenom crossed over a defender, attacked the goal, laid the ball up and in pretty as you please and got fouled. He completed the old-school three-point play, and Kentucky led by five.

The lead never dipped below four again with Fox in the midst of his own personal nine-point run of excellence in the clutch.

As much as Alabama battled for 40 minutes, bolting out to an early 10-point lead and never letting Kentucky pull ahead by double digits, superior talent is hard to beat when it decides to step up and take over. That's exactly what Fox did...

As much as Alabama overcame its flaws from the start of the SEC season with defense, rebounding, guts and grit, one of those flaws has been the lack of a consistent go-to scorer. Kentucky has two in Fox and Monk, and it was Fox's turn to say, "I got this."

To a man, Alabama has no reason to hang its head after losing to a legit Final Four contender and falling to 19-14 overall. Avery Johnson's second team has squeezed almost every drop out of its talent, winning 12 games against SEC opponents between the regular season and the conference tournament. Of their nine conference losses, five came by five points or less.

Including Saturday, when they made the entire Big Blue Nation perspire.

Now the Tide has every reason to look forward to the NIT and beyond. More experience for the likes of Key and Dazon Ingram is a positive, and considerable help is on the way.

Sexton, the explosive 6-2 point guard out of Georgia, is the No. 7 national recruit in the 247Sports rankings for 2017. Petty, the versatile 6-5 shooting guard from Huntsville, is No. 30. Both can play at a high level, both can score in bunches and both can get you points in a variety of ways when you need them most.

That was the difference between this Alabama team and this Kentucky team Saturday. UK had Fox and Monk. Alabama didn't have Sexton and Petty.

Even without them, the Tide has closed the gap. A year ago, Kentucky dismissed Alabama from this tournament by 26 points. This elimination game was anything but easy for the regular-season champs.

Imagine what might happen next year should they meet on this stage again.

I know everyone is going crazy over Sexton and Petty(rightfully so) but I think Alex Reese and Herb Jones are gonna be big time players for us too.

I don't think Reese will be ready for a year or two. Saw him play he is just bigger than most not that impressive to me.

All of Bama's hope shouldn't be placed in the hands of a few incoming freshmen.
I'm hoping players like Ingram and Key will develop and become big leaders on this team.

Outside of Sexton and Petty, I see Reese playing the most significant minutes out of the freshmen. Reese isn't as athletically gifted as the bigs we have, but he is very fundamentally sound and adds some floor spacing and post scoring without giving us a huge disadvantage defensively or in rebounding. I think he'll get 15-20 min.

my observations tell me we need to develop those players who can hit the mid range shot. Like Robert HOrry and others from the top of the key. Almost all of our baskets were either long shots or in the paint close to the basket. Also it appeared we have no offensive rhythm and this could be that UK played great man to man D.

Sexton will be the leader of this team. I'm not expecting a hell of a lot from the rest of the freshmen, but Sexton isn't just a normal freshman. Different breed.

Same here. We're going to be thin at PF unless we land a grad transfer. Reese might have to play 15 minutes per game.

Same, though I think Petty has skills that can immediately contribute as well.

I'm guessing we'll be in the market for a Bola type PF/C transfer again.

Best guess is Austin and AJJ drops his scholarship I'd think.

But who knows, could always have a guy we don't expect to leave leave.
