He tried, and I give him tons and tons of credit for hustling his arse off his last two years, but, ball handling is his weakness. If he can somehow work on that, he’ll be in the NBA. Herb has defense, and was a little better ball handler, but just struggles shooting. Both guys will make money in Europe, but I’d sure like to see them in the NBA one day.
What I find crazy is in HS he was a pretty good ball-handler and played PG a lot, he regressed big time in that area in college. I am sure the step up in competition had a lot to do with it.

I might catch hell for this, but, a lot of times, it seemed like he was pushing or trying to hard. Again, I respect the hell out of his hustle, but I don’t believe he developed much as he should have. Whether that’s coaching and coaching change or his ceiling, I just don’t know. When he was “on” we were damn near unbeatable. Unfortunately, he went games, without being “on”

Yeah his issues on the court seemed to mostly start in his head. Trying too hard is a good way to put it, he put way too much pressure on himself.

I wish that I would have paid more attention to when he pressured himself. Was it when Q was out of the game? I’m sure it’s just hindsight. But it seemed like everyone somewhat calmed down when Q was leading things. Shack scored, but I truly don’t believe that we’ll miss him. I think when everything plays out, Shack will realize that he needed our system, more than we needed him. (Sounds shitty, but I truly believe that). This system can make players

JQ was the only guy we had on the roster last year that was actually a PG. Herb did his best at PG but wasn't a good passer or dribbler.
We will give up some size from last year but I think we will be able to play even faster than last year with a lineup of JQ, JD, Burnett, Ellis, and Gurley. JQ, JD, and Burnett are all good ball handlers, Ellis isn't bad either.
We also have taller guards like Miles and Holt, then two big guys in Tchikou and Bediako. We have a chance to be a really versatile team if everything comes together.

Oats isn't gonna abandon his guard heavy fast-paced offense and all of the sudden go with an old school 3 bigs on the floor at a time offense. We are already loaded with guys that can play forward, Gurley, Bediako, Tchikou, Gary, Rojas, KAH, that's almost half the roster already that plays mainly forward. We need another guard.
Tchikou has Guard Skills

Theres more to being a guard than hitting a three. Can he dribble? Can he guard a guy that’s 6’1? I haven't seen many 6’11 guys play guard even in the NBA. He could play the 4 maybe but we would be a really slow lineup with him and another big like Cockburn or Bediako in the game at the same time.

Can he dribble?
Uh...yes. Very well

At the 3/4 he won’t have to.

Any smart coach would isolate a fast guard on a 6’11 guy playing the 3 and he would blow by him every play. Having a 6’11 guy who can dribble and shoot at the 5 gives you an advantage cause he is more skilled than the guy guarding him, playing a 6’11 guy at guard gives the other team the advantage. Tchikou has potential but he is a freshman in college coming off an achilles injury, he isn't Durant or Giannis.

You put him out there with someone like Gary. Tchikou plays the 3 on offense and Gary the 4 and then Tchikou Guards the 4 on the defensive end and Gary Guards the 3.

Why not just put Tchikou at the 5 on offense so that a slow guy is guarding him and give yourself an advantage? Tchikou isn't gonna out-quick many guards, especially not coming off an achilles injury.
I do think we will have some lineups with Tchikou and Gurley in the lineup at the same time but it would make more sense to have Tchikou at the 5 and Gurley at the 4 when they are than the other way around.

I do hope that Tchikou is skilled enough to be a guard, just saying that if he is it makes more sense to play him at the 5 still, then you could have a 5 guard lineup basically but still have size in the middle, which is what Oats ideally wants and why he tries to recruit skilled bigs.

Tchikou is not a guard, and neither is Gary.

I do think Tchikou has the potential to be one of the most skilled bigs in the country if he is close to 100% healthy. He is pretty special, not many 6'11 guys can move and shoot like he can.

I agree. But he's not a guard. Is Durant a guard? I dont think so.
I just hope Tchikou can play and give us some solid minutes.

Durant is about the closest thing to an NBA guard that's 6'10 or over, but still I would consider him a small forward, he isn't as quick as a guard. Giannis and Ben Simmons can't shoot so I consider them forwards too.
There are some 6'9 guys that are legit guards, but I can't really think of anyone over 6'9 I would consider a guard.

I think Tchikou is the tallest and heaviest player listed on the roster
Posted on 7/8/21 at 6:19 am to SECSolomonGrundy
He is the heaviest but Bediako is listed as 7'0 on the roster so he is the tallest.

very small sample size, but that recent clip of tchikou doing drills gave me the impression all that added muscle didnt hurt his mobility at all. if anything the weight gain improved it. by no means to the point of being 'guard level' but certainly better than the average center.
gary on the other hand does have the quickness of your average guard, just not really guard skills. i could still see him technically playing at the 3 spot on occasion as long as the other frontcourt mates can still spread the floor. tchikou and gurley will def do that, while the others have potential but still a bit of a question mark.

Tchikou I would label a stretch Forward. He'll play out on offense but I don't think he would ever be labeled or considered a Guard.
Gary is definitely a Forward. Right now his game is playing defense, crashing the boards, and going for putbacks. Hopefully his jump shot is developing.
Another poster pointed out that we may be losing some size this year in our lineup. I'm actually okay with the trade-off of size for speed. I don't want to see players like Herb or Petty trying to ball handle again. If we're undersized at two Guard spots but both have great handles and can speed up the offense, I'm all for it.
I'm really eager to see this offense with two primary ballhandlers on the floor along with a stretch 5. This offense hasn't reached its full potential just yet.
