That's a definite possibility but I'm hopeful Battle can put a package together where a good candidate can't say no.

All the folks who said Bama has no shot at Marshall... are wrong.
I want to believe.

Did any of you read this article on Archie Miller? That's a pretty damn good coaching job this year.

He's my second choice after Marshall. I don't think we are getting Gregg so really, he's my first choice.

Just need to get Saban on Marshall.

I believe so. I can't imagine why he wouldn't be.

I think Battle understands the magnitude of this situation. There is plenty of money to pay a coach that can build a top flite b ball program and he is prepared to go out and make it happen. This will be his defining moment as AD at Bama.
All that to say, I think everybody but about 10 coaches are realistic.

If Battle fricks this up, he won't see the end of Sabans career at UA. If he can't make a good to great hire for bball, I won't no part of him selecting our next fooseball coach.

I feel the same way.

Drew D of AlabamaIntel article:

The key will be total autonomy of the basketball program plus the SIGNIFICANT financial commitment mentioned above. Marshall (1.75 million) & Smart (1.52 million) make very good money but likely have never been approached with an offer as of the magnitude that could be put on the table by the Crimson Tide power brokers. Will it ultimately happen? Very likely yes. But the deal will still need to be closed, and will it will need to be with the headlines made in the last two weeks by the basketball programs at Auburn & UAB in the yellowhammer state.

quote:If Battle screws this up, he need not reboard the plane back to Tuscaloosa. If we fail on this hire and end up with a "D" list candidate, Bama basketball will be set back ten years. Having said that, it will be hard to screw this up with the names mentioned and the money offered. Let's land Marshall and remove all doubt. After watching WSU today and how hard those kids played, I drool at the thought of him with SEC caliber athletes.

While I'm hopin' to see a great hire in b-ball, Bama football and basketball are apples and oranges. Currently, our football program is elite and pretty much sells itself, while our basketball program is far from that level...we're far more likely to attract a big name football coach as opposed to basketball. And whomever Battle hires, we're not likely to know whether he screwed it up until at least a couple of years or so from now any way...

Battle is a shrewd business man. You don't get his kind of money without having an ability to make good business decisions. In the end this coaching search is primarily a business decision. A big name coach is more money on the front end but generally pays for himself in increased revenue.
Having let a solid choice in Howland go without an offer, I have to think that Battle knows something about a big name that leads him to believe we have a better than even chance to land him. Battle is smart enough to know if we are being played for a raise. Whether it is Marshall, as we are being led to believe, or another name totally off the radar, we don't know, but Battle knows this is his defining moment as AD. Our patience will be rewarded with great news in a couple of weeks.
Otherwise Howland or Prohm would already be here.

Lucky from BOL keeps saying Bama has more than a shot, so obviously people close to Marshall maybe is communicating to Bama through Back Channels that he is very interested. I was hoping Wichita State lost yesterday to speed up this process.

I really hope this is so...after watching WSU whup Kansas yesterday, I'd love to see him at Bama and run that style of b-ball...but the skeptic in me wonders if this might be a lot of smoke to leverage a pay raise from WSU...

from the fan in me:
Me too, but IF he ultimately ends up being the coach it will "feel" better that he didn't have a 2nd round loss and is coming of at minimum a sweet 16.
From the realist in me:
Why would he leave? WSU will likely give him a substantial raise to minimize some of the salary difference he may gain by coming. He's proven at WSU he can A) be a #1 seed, B) make the final four, and C) consistently make runs in the tourney. What is Bama offering that he doesn't already have?
I love Alabama as much as anyone, but I'm not so blinded by that love that I think everyone else views it the same way I do.

I think Battle will offer a lot, I know he will offer at least 3 mil a year, I think the most important would be total control of the program. From what I've heard Nick Saban will be involved as well. I think he could do damage in the SEC, after Kentucky and maybe Florida this leaugue is wide open and Kentucky have down years as well because they have so much turnover.
