The Broncos put Surtain on the best opponent WR every week. Why didn’t we ever just stick Koolaid on 11 and see if he could stop it?

That is what they should have done but for some reason we need our defense to be overly complicated.

Do you actually believe Nick wouldn't play a player if he were the better player?

Absolutely, Jalen Hurts is one of my favorite players ever but Tua was significantly better than him in 2017 and Jalen still started. Seth McGlaughlin is way better than Darrian Dalcourt but they kept running DD out there. Literally anyone was better than Chris Owens last year but he was starting every game. I’m sure I could continue but I don’t think I need to.

Well they played Dalcourt over Seth for 2 weeks...

Saban has always been stubborn with veterans playing over underclassman. See Tua/Jalen

Nah we had several players starting on that team that didn't even sniff a NFL roster. Front didn't have many capable players starting either.

He's a top 3 cornerback in the NFL, so yeah.

Most of the guys in the current defensive backfield won't sniff an NFL roster. Have you noticed the trend for Bama over the last few years? Surtain was the last.

Yes Patrick Surtain is legit. He was legit as a recruit out of HS and you could see the obvious talent unlike some of the guys on the current roster.
BTW, I love Koolaid and he gives it his all but he's no where close to Patrick Surtain.

I think that Branch, Battle, Hellams, Mckinstry, and Arnold will definitely make an NFL roster. I know that the defense was total a-hole against UT, but you can't indict a player's skill off of one single game.

I don't think so. Maybe Koolaid as a DB but not a corner. The rest I just don't see it. They just don't have the speed and or flexibility the NFL requires.

Koolaid should make it as a nickle. I think Branch will make it as a safety and he does have good speed for a safety. Arnold has a good shot after 1 or 2 more years. Battle as a close to the box safety has a shot as well.

Kyree Jackson had no business getting an offer from Bama at DB. The kid is a safety.

Don't forget Surtain has been getting NFL coaching his entire life.

This is something I think a lot of people forget. We have TWO elite corners in the NFL. Surtain and Humphrey. We have a bunch of good safety’s. It’s the technique Saban teaches his DB’s and he’ll die before he changes it. It just doesn’t work anymore in todays game. Face guarding a receiver and playing through his arms isn’t going to cut it. Surtain has a NFL corner as his dad and has been taught the NFL way since day 1. His technique is teach tape. Marlon also has a dad that played in the NFL and was only a starter for 1 year. You could also see Marlon’s instincts were elite even here. He just knew when to turn, that isn’t taught. Every other corner we have put in the league no matter the hype has flamed out or moved to safety and been productive. It’s just something we’re gonna have to accept. Saban teaches the DB’s a certain way and that isn’t gonna change. We also seem to recruit a lot more tweener/safety type players than true corners with size and speed so anytime we play a team with 3 or 4 legit wide receivers we automatically lose that matchup. We can’t cover across the board with 2 corners and 3-4 safeties on the field.

All these guys are still listed as corners:

Levi Wallace - Steelers
Josh Jobe - Eagles
Trevon Diggs - Cowboys
Tony Brown - Colts
Jayln Armour-Davis - Ravens

I forgot about Diggs. Every other corner is average at best. Also diggs was a receiver before a corner so the ball skills are clearly there. Don’t think he’s an elite corner tho. I love Levi Wallace and what he did but he’s still average at best. We have 2 elite corners in the NFL maybe 3 and 2 of them have played DB a different way than Saban teaches. Which is why they are able to be elite in the NFL.
