Just for an example of how different the impact is region by region and thus how the "one size fits all" approach to mitigation is unnecessarily damaging the economy in general and many individuals, WSFA gave an update last night of the impact on local hospitals.
Keep in mind these aren't vent/ICU patients, they're total patients.
Baptist South - 15 out of 454 beds
Baptist East - 14 out of 126 beds
Jackson - 14 out of 334 beds
Prattville Baptist - 5 out of 85 beds.
That's 48 out of 999 beds (4.5%) being used by COVID patients as of the nightly news on 4/11.
Those hospitals are the principal ones serving the Montgomery MPO (metropolitan planning area) which includes Montgomery, Prattville, Millbrook, and Wetumpka - a total population of 375,000 people. There's no reason at all why there couldn't be some easing of the existing restrictions in place for that area so that people could go back to making a living.

Beijing tightens grip over coronavirus research, amid US-China row on virus origin
quote:
China has imposed restrictions on the publication of academic research on the origins of the novel coronavirus, according to a central government directive and online notices published by two Chinese universities, that have since been removed from the web.
Under the new policy, all academic papers on Covid-19 will be subject to extra vetting before being submitted for publication. Studies on the origin of the virus will receive extra scrutiny and must be approved by central government officials, according to the now-deleted posts.

it’s not the first time the Chinese have unleashed a virus onto the world.
But yet some ppl think the Chinese do no wrong.
Mao starved a estimated 38 to 45 million of his on ppl to death. That mindset is still enforced in China.
If their willing to do that to their on ppl... what do you think their willing to do to the rest of the world

I honestly don't think many people in the US think this at all.
I do, however, think that for a combination of financial, political, and personal fear (scared of cold war/armed conflict) reasons a lot of people and most national leaders are afraid to confront them about the things they do.

Media outlets have been pumping up China in the last 3wks. Never say anything negative about China.

Didn't release that number. The average US hospital occupancy rate during normal times is about 60%. Assuming normal numbers other than Corona (and they're probably below normal since all elective procedures are on hold), you're looking at a whole lot of empty beds.
Edited to add - for anecdotal evidence about lower non-covid patient loads, Huntsville Hospital is furloughing people because they don't have the patients for them to treat - and this is something that's happening nationwide.

What they're paid to say (see my statements about fear to confront) and what they actually believe aren't the same thing.
Also, who the frick thinks the national media in any way reflects what mainstream America thinks?

They don’t reflect mainstream America. But the number of mainstream Americans isn’t what it once was.

The wealthiest Americans make trillions off China's exploitative manufacturing practices.
Trump, Republicans, Democrats. . . all of them either make trillions from their own investments or were put in office by those who do . .. Fox, CNN etc all with stockholders who make billions off the way things are with China . . .
If you like lip service and "tough talk" you may get a bit of that but nothing substantial is going to change.

I'm not aware of Trump having any significant involvement in manufacturing of any type. His money is real estate.
As far as the rest go, yes it is non-partisan graft. Even so, that can only go so far when China threatens to cut off things like penicillin those people get more concerned with keeping their jobs.
The biggest problem now is that we're so reliant on them we CAN'T cut the cord right now if we all were in agreement to make it happen. Best we can hope for is to get really critical items like meds back to being produced domestically.

Perhaps I'm wrong about this but I would imagine that Chinese money creates a ton of wealth for the big players in real estate.

Yeah, the only long term solution would include lots of billionaires making a lot less profit to shift manufacturing back to USA where they have to share it with workers. Well, at least more than with China. So that's totally out of the picture.
Agree that the most we can hope for is individual crisis like this to force us to pick a few things here and there to make ourselves. . . and also add the benefit of creating a few more higher paying jobs at home instead of just more Walmart shelf stockers.

All those counties between the two coasts. You know, the ones where normal people that actually make this place go live.
The ones the heads you see talking on those media sites never meet, don't understand and really don't care about.
