The ball was probably supposed to go to Damien Harris. However, Tua pulled the ball down when he saw a defender was probably going to tackle him for no gain. Then Harris just stands there flat footed whilevTua scrambled around.

What the hell was Harris doing there?
It’s like he forgot a play was happening.

Also, a legit wheel route to Harris on that play would have been dat murder.

I really believe our receivers had become used to being blockers rather than receivers when plays broke down under Jalen's watch....I could be wrong.

I'm sure he ll learn to throw it away next time. If not we ll have 1 less QB because Saban will kill him lol.

It's because the play wasn't supposed to go to Damien Harris. The screen action was meant to be a distraction to open up one of a couple developing routes downfield. The Georgia secondary didn't bite and the pressure got to him before he could finish his progression.

Watch the play again. Harris is wide open for the first couple of seconds. If Tua throws him the ball, he's free in space one on one with a LB that's in a hurry to get there. Damien might make him miss if he has the ball. I will say Damien didn't do anyone any favors by turning around at the snap and just standing there flatfooted, waiting for the ball. It looks like Tua looks deep first then comes back to Harris and by then it's too late, the LB is almost there and the pocket is breaking down.
At that instant, Hentges who lined up at TE on the right and stayed in to block is on a delayed release into the right flats and is alone. If Tua flicks the ball to him, he gets big yards. Tua instead chooses to try and spin out of trouble and gets sacked.

@Ben_Litvin has a thread going about this play on twitter right now actually: LINK

quote:

They're trying to win it on this play. It's a smoke and go. Tua fakes the screen and then looks to the vertical. If the boundary safety bites he'll throw it over the top. If the corner bites he'll throw it b/w the corner and safety. If neither bites he'll look to the over route.

Neither the corner nor the safety bit and before he had a chance to let the over route develop the pressure gets home. It was a failed play and now a completely forgotten one, given what happened next.

He also points out we scored on similar plays in the 2016 and 2017 playoff Clemson games.
