I took it more as Saban defending his players, who the whole world is against right now. At least I hope that's how it was meant.

Brutal schedule and tons of youth on that team, especially on defense. People overestimated them and still do because they had big names return, but they lost most of the key pieces from 2009. The 2022 team had more off-season hype and a much easier schedule - the SEC West is really down this year.

And again, as has been said many times, it's not just that this team has lost to two inferior opponents, it's that they have looked bad against every single opponent, barring the glorified scrimmages against Vanderbilt and the like. They never play to the standard Saban established.
