All he told me is what I posted. This is not Gilmer's first incident of inappropriate behavior and other parents have come forward.

I've heard some other people say this as well, and I trust the people who told me this, but I'm skeptical of any school system liability here. Honestly, unless there are more videos I think the school system would have a pretty decent defense in court over this. The videos that are publicly available right now do not clearly show what people are wanting them to show.

That said, Hoover City Schools are pretty cowardly when it comes to court so they'd probably just settle if it means avoiding litigation in court.

ETA: The fact that the parents got state representative Juandalynn Givan as their "lawyer" makes me very skeptical of how serious the allegations are and how much substance is actually there. I think they'd jump at a payday and a press conference.

Looks like they aren't trying to claim there were any prior incidents at Hoover. They're saying people are now coming forward from Clay-Chalkville and Hoover should have somehow known about this stuff other parents "have begun to come forward" about. That interview makes it clear this is nothing but a money grab.

quote:

Other parents from Jefferson County schools have begun to come forward with additional allegations dating back to when Gilmer was the head coach at Clay-Chalkville High School, the attorneys said.

“These revelations suggest a troubling pattern of behavior that may have gone unchecked for years,” the statement said. “Obviously, the Hoover Board of Education failed to perform a quality background and personnel investigation before hiring Helms, particularly as his abusive behavior was well known in the community and by his former employer at Clay-Chalkville. Hoover rushed to hire Gilmer because of his winning record on the field and failed the students who had been subjected to physically disturbing abuse by Gilmer and Helms.”

Givan said the education system is supposed to be a safe haven for children, where they can grow and learn without fear of harm.

Looks like they should be suing Clay-Chalkville if they're going to claim a "pattern of behavior" for a coach that was hired in January. Going from allegation to losing a job in under a week is lightning fast for government entities.

Guy has a pattern of abuse. Thought he could just change the first letter of his name and no one would figure it out.
