Top 25 recruiting classes of 2020 (247Sports)
quote:

Chris Braswell

The 2020 recruiting cycle is just beginning to heat up, but several college football programs around the country are already off to a strong start with their respective classes.

While the Division I Early Signing Period is still more than nine months away, we’ve decided to check in on the nation’s top 25 recruiting classes, according to the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings.

The SEC leads all conferences with nine of the current top 25 recruiting classes in the country, followed by the Big Ten with six. The ACC and Big 12 each have four classes ranked among the top 25, while the Pac-12 has one.

With that in mind, scroll down to take a closer look at the nation’s top 25 recruiting classes for the 2020 cycle as of March 11, per the Composite. (more)

Four-Star Friday: Haynes King, Jalen Kimber among risers (247Sports | 03/08 | segments)
quote:

Jalen Kimber

247Sports has national, regional and local analysts and reporters throughout the country getting eyes on college football prospects at 7on7 events, The Opening Regional events, Under Armour camps, quarterback competitions and even basketball games or track meets. New information bubbles up weekly, if not daily, and context is added to what we know – or thought we knew.

To keep pace with the fire hose of information that we gather on the thousands of prospects around the country, we will be making weekly rankings updates that we’ll be documenting here, every Friday, in a piece we’re calling Four-Star Fridays.

This week, The Opening Dallas regional, the Los Angeles Under Armour regional and the Adidas 7on7 East Coast Regional are among the drivers of the biggest movers.

No. 1 overall traits

Haynes King

You may see more spectacular camp showings for a quarterback than what Haynes King put together in Dallas but the Longview High state champion did everything we wanted him to do.

King showed a strong arm, there’s nothing concerning in his delivery, he exceeded the athleticism expectations with a 4.50 40 and he has a big strong frame. From a profile standpoint, he’s what we like at quarterback and we think he’s just starting to scratch the surface developmentally.

The move: King is up from No. 43 nationally to No. 31, shortening the distance between himself and other top quarterbacks Bryce Young and DJ Uiagalelei.

Note: Article includes King's highlights at The Opening Dallas Regional. I haven't seen any mention of Bama recruiting King, but I suspect they may be doing so behind the scenes.

Lockdown potential

Jalen Kimber

In our recent Top247 overhaul for the class of 2020, Mansfield Timberview CB Jalen Kimber received a big rankings boost based on junior film. On Sunday at The Opening Dallas, he showed that he’s got elite athleticism as well. Kimber ran multiple 4.4s in the 40 and was the fastest man at the event. He also had a 40-inch vertical and showed a frame that is brimming with upside. He’s a bouncy athlete with good feet that showed us he’s got five-star caliber physical traits. Alabama appears to be the new leader for Kimber.

The move: From No. 182 nationally and 30th in the state of Texas up to No. 105 and No. 16 in the state.

Ground Zero wins Adidas West Coast Invitational (247Sports | segments)
quote:

Ground Zero takes home the Adidas West Coast Invitational Championship with an impressive win over FSP Blue Chip in the Final. After losing to FSP Blue Chip in overtime in the semi-finals two weeks ago at the Las Vegas Pylon 7v7 event, Ground Zero got some revenge with a dominant 35-12 win to take home the Adidas West Coast Invitational.

It wasn’t just that Ground Zero took home the tournament championship on Sunday that surprised some people, they were expected to make a long run in the event. The surprise was how dominant they were in taking out a loaded FSP Blue Chip squad that was just about everyone’s tourney favorite heading into the event. Ground Zero was led by a dominant defense and an efficient offense en route to the tourney title.

Below is a rundown of the top performers from Sunday's loaded Adidas West Coast Invitational. . .

NEXT FIVE DEFENSE:

DB Kelee Ringo

The physical corner again showed why he is considered such an elite talent. He was overpowering at the line of scrimmage, didn’t give receivers an inch of breathing room and displayed the straight-line speed to stay with wideouts down field. Ringo does get a bit too handsy at times when he doesn’t have to, but that’s a minor technique correction for a player that oozes high-end upside. The five-star prospect from Scottsdale (Ariz.) Saguaro plans to visit Oklahoma soon before planning some official visits.

DB Dwight McGlothern

The Cedar Hill (Texas) Trinity Christian defensive back was very good in the games we saw and really uses his length and athleticism well. He has long arms and can disrupt a receiver at the line, make a play on the football and closes extremely well. He was rarely tested and when we isolated on him, there was zero separation in whoever he was covering. For a long 6-2 corner, he showed good quickness and change of direction and plays with a nice edge and compete level in his game as well. Texas A&M currently leads in the 247 Crystal Ball forecast.

TOP FIVE OFFENSE

WR Jalen McMillan

Despite playing with Seattle-based FSP Blue Chip, the Northern California star receiver didn’t skip a beat and was consistently getting open down field. McMillan is a smooth route runner that sets up his defenders nicely to break free and has the top-end speed to get a couple yards of separation. His hand-eye coordination was superb, making a number of impressive catches in the end zone while fighting off contact. He scored both of FSP’s touchdowns in the championship game and is only scratching the surface of how good we think he can in a few years when he gains size and strength after spending time in a college strength program. Washington, Oregon and Notre Dame have been generating the most buzz for the four-star prospect from Fresno (Calif.) San Joaquin Memorial.

All-American Game Invites Going Out

Five players at the event landed invites to the All-American Game in San Antonio, Texas. Fresno (Calif.) San Joaquin Memorial wide out Jalen McMillan, Sammamish (Wash.) Eastside Catholic receiver Gee Scott Jr., Saint Louis (Mo.) Desmet wide out Jordan Johnson, Tucson (Ariz.) Salpointe Catholic running back Bijan Robinson and Burien (Wash.) Kennedy Catholic ’21 quarterback Sam Huard have all looked great this off-season and show up even better with the pads on.

While not in attendance, Orem (Utah) four-star athlete Noah Sewell was also invited to the AA game after the tournament and immediately committed. His older brother Penei was in San Antonio for the 2018 game but was unable to play as he recovered from a shoulder injury.

In addition to the five new invites, the nation’s top two quarterbacks, Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco’s DJ Uiagalelei and Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei’s Bryce Young signed their paperwork to lock in their spot for the All-American Game.

NEWS AND NOTES:

Although his Premium squad went out in the quarter finals, there wasn’t a better quarterback in the event than Bryce Young. The Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei signal caller and USC commit showed why he’s a top 25 player nationally and threw some of the best balls in the tournament. His arm is live and accurate and his touch and feel on the deep has really improved in the last year.

Seattle (Wash.) Gardield athlete Sav'ell Smalls is another player who, assuming he stays healthy, should be able to play football for as long as he wants. He’s not just a great physical talent but loves to compete and plays with a ton of energy and emotion. He has the versatility to play multiple spots at the next level, defensive end or outside linebacker and would be among the nation’s top tight end prospects if he wanted to be a full time player on the offensive side of the ball. Oregon and Washington are hoping to keep Smalls out West but Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Miami and Texas are just a few national programs making a big push.

From a pure physicality and speed standpoint, no receiver was more impressive than Calabasas (Calif.) standout Jermaine Burton. He has the ability to run past any corner and get vertical and the physicality to bully an opposing corner as well. You can’t press him or play him too tight and those corners who did try and get physical usually ended up on the ground. He said LSU, Georgia and UCLA remain the schools on him hardest and Miami and Oregon are pushing hard as well.

Upland (Calif.) linebacker Justin Flowe told us recently he might be done playing 7v7 this off-season but there he was in the middle of the defense for Premium making plays. Flowe is known for his toughness and physicality and he’s a scary sight, even in short and shirts but he’s very quick, solid in coverage and can really close on the football as well. Clemson and Georgia made big impressions on his recent visits and USC remains a local favorite. Texas and LSU should get visits later this off-season as well.

Tucson (Ariz.) Salpointe Catholic running back Bijan Robinson was outstanding all tournament. He was the top running back in the event and made a ton of plays in the slot and lining up out wide. It’s always hard for running backs to shine in a 7v7 setting but Robinson is the exception and showed why he’s among the nation’s most coveted athletes. He visited UCLA and USC over the weekend and he’ll check out Ohio State, Oklahoma and Texas this off-season as well.

Saint Louis (Mo.) Desmet wide out Jordan Johnson was easily among the most impressive pass catchers of the day. Johnson has the total package of size, speed, routes, hands and body control and was always open when we watched his talented Fast Houston squad. As mentioned, Johnson was so impressive he received an invite to the All-American Game in San Antonio during the tournament and also picked up scholarship offers from USC and Texas over the weekend.

Four-Star WR Jalen McMillan sets commitment date (247Sports | segments)
quote:

Fresno (Calif.) San Joaquin Memorial wide out Jalen McMillan showed why he’s among the nation’s top pass catchers at the Adidas West Coast Invitational over the weekend.

McMillan was very impressive over the weekend and was able to get deep against every team his FSP Blue Chip squad lined up against. He’s a smooth route runner and his speed can be deceptive. There is little wasted motion in his running style and before you know it, he’s two yards behind you.

This was our evaluation of McMillan, who made our Top Five Offensive Performers following the tournament...

On the recruiting front, McMillan has a pair of unofficial visits coming up and is close to another cut to his college list. He cut his list of schools down to 10 in February. “I’m going to cut it down to 5-6 on May 1st,” McMillan said. “I have some visits coming up and then I’ll be ready to do that. I’m going to Oklahoma next week and then I’ll be at Notre Dame for their Spring Game...

McMillan said Ohio State and USC are a couple of schools he’s hoping to visit as well and a handful of SEC schools remain on his list. “Alabama, Georgia and Florida are still up there too,” McMillan said. “I like the SEC and I think all those programs have great coaches and great people associated with them. I have no problem leaving home to play college ball and that’s big time football out there.

“My plan is after I cut my list to 5-6, I can start thinking about some of my official visits. I’ll take those during the season and then I’m planning to commit on December 7, which is my birthday.”

4-star WR Jalen McMillan 6-2/181 CA hudl

Eta: 247 West mods Brandon Huffman and Blair Angulo CB Jalen McMillan to Washington today. Notre Dame (been considered strong contender) mod Tom Loy CBd him to Foggy.

Eta: Mekhail Sherman told BOL on Tuesday afternoon that he may also make it (to UA) on March 25, but it’s not 100% locked in just yet.

Yep, two guys from St John's (Keilan Robinson's and Terrell Lewis' HS) I would love for us to get:

5-star WR Rakim Jarrett 6-0/182 DC hudl

5-star LB Mekhail Sherman 6-3/234 DC hudl

A lot of tough competition for them, but I think our chances are pretty good. Sherman projects very well at both OLB and ILB.

4-star QB/DB Kristian Story 6-1/206 AL hudl
quote:

As a junior, Story racked up big-time statistics as a dual-threat quarterback, nearly 2,500 yards with 40 touchdowns passing (just 8 interceptions). He added more than 1,200 yards and another 16 touchdowns rushing, along with his 33 tackles and 9 interceptions. - 247Sports

Even with Tua likely going to the NFL after this season, Bama may have trouble landing an elite 2020 QB prospect because of Taulia and Tyson, who could both redshirt if Jones (redshirt soph) proves to be a pretty solid backup to Tua. Bama likes Story a lot as a DB, but he's actually a pretty good QB. He reminds me of Blake Sims. My point is that Story (assuming Bama signs him) could provide enough "insurance" at QB that it doesn't seem that critical for Bama to sign another QB besides him in the 2020 class.

4-star RB Keyvone Lee 6-0/216 FL hudl
quote:

Scouting Report, 9/7/18, John Garcia Jr.

Powerfully-built prospect who can damage defense from multitude of positions. Prefers running back, and thick lower-half lends towards the position at the next level. Natural runner with great lean and body control despite great size. More of an accelerator than sprinter but plenty elusive and crafty in the open field with good vision, change of direction and natural instincts. Can play space game or power game from running back position. Scheme versatile. Extremely effective pass-catcher with route-running ability and ball skills to make contested catch. Strong stop-start ability in traffic. Gritty runner with workhorse qualities. Weight has fluctuated some through last year of high school but Power Five strength and conditioning program should help find the right balance. Candidate for playing time right out of the gates at high-end program with three-down potential at the highest level.

Note: Keyvone Lee visited Bama on March 2.

5-star OLB/TE Reggie Grimes 6-4/225 TN hudl
quote:

4.58 forty | 4.25 shuttle | 28.9 vertical

Scouting Report, 2/27/19, Barton Simmons

Long, high cut athlete with enormous physical upside. One of the best athletes in the country from a combine perspective. Excels in track as well. Naturally strong and can deliver jarring hits. Good as a pursuit defender and easily runs down action away. Has positional versatility. Athleticism and frame combo points towards edge pass rusher but he could be effective at linebacker or on offense at tight end long term. Plays too high and is not refined. Doesn’t seek contact out. More of a finesse athlete currently. Likely an impact power five player and a mid to early round NFL Draft pick with upside as high as the first round.

Athletic Background
Varsity basketball player
Varsity track and field athlete

Skills
Athleticism: 10
Pursuit: 9
Closing Speed: 9
First Step: 9
Frame: 9
Hand Quickness: 7
Instincts: 7
Point of Attack: 6

Bama appears to have a pretty good chance of landing one of it's top two elite 2020 TE targets (Arik Gilbert or Darnell Washington). But if Bama doesn't, Reggie Grimes projects very well at TE. And Bama appears to have pretty good chances of landing Grimes and enough other elite OLB prospects to allow developing Grimes at TE.
