There are pretty serious concerns about whether Geoge Pickens can qualify. He has A LOT of work to do to make it. He may have to take courses in the summer before that can happen.
If Pickens signs an NLI with a school in February, that school won't get that signing spot back to use for another recruit if Pickens fails to qualify and has to go to Juco for two years.
So, it's quite possible Pickens doesn't end up signing an NLI with Auburn or any school until he's able to qualify.
ETA: Tim Watts says Bama isn't aiming to sign another WR in this class besides Metchie, due to higher priority needs at other positons.

I realize it always sounds like sour grapes when it's an in-state guy going to the Barn and we ding the recruit for something, but...
I've seen several of Hoover's games on TV. The guy just doesn't make many plays. And he isn't very fast. I mean... I guess we dinged Justyn Ross a little for that (although he seemed to make more plays than Pickens), but Ross also runs about .3 seconds faster in the 40. So even not taking into account his grades, how is he a 5*, let alone top 10?

I'd be scared to waste an LOI on Pickens if he doesn't qualify, though. We'd have turned down another player at a real position of need to make room in that instance.
If he DOES qualify, I'm sure we'll be disappointed not to have him in the fold. But if Malzahn has proven anything, it's that he can waste exceptional talent at QB and WR.
Honestly, I'm a little surprised Bo Nix is still planning to go there. I understand the family connection, but ... man, that's a LOT of love for the school to overlook the lack of coaching he's gonna get.
I wonder if he re-thinks his commitment if Kelly Bryant transfers to Auburn.

So that has real legs? He wouldn't be bad in that offense but they have really missed on the O-line last few seasons.

Rival Views: Is Antonio Alfano worthy of five-star status?
quote:
During rankings meetings, not everyone agrees on everything. In this version of Rivals Views, National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell and Mid-Atlantic Recruiting Analyst Adam Friedman debate the five-star status of a New Jersey standout.

FARRELL'S VIEW
While I like Antonio Alfano quite a bit, I’m not quite sold on the Alabama defensive tackle commitment from New Jersey's five-star status yet. He’s improved quite a bit his senior season and has shown more of a motor each and every play, but he still lacks great consistency overall. And I worry about his athleticism at the position when it comes to being an elite five-star prospect. Alabama is getting a great player and a kid who could eventually play like a five-star as he’s coached up, but right now I’d keep him as a high four-star.
Is this guy for real?

If there's anyone who is taking the position that he ISN'T worthy of 5-star status after watching his film, they need to be immediately terminated with cause (stupidity).

FRIEDMAN'S VIEW
Anybody who turns on the tape of Alfano’s senior season cannot deny his dominance. His speed at the snap is what stands out most about him. He is in the backfield seemingly before any of the offensive linemen have gotten out of their stances. Even if any of the linemen are able to get a hand on him, he is so strong that he continues on as if he’s completely unimpeded.
We’ve been pointing to consistency, on and off the field, as the reason for not rocketing Alfano up the rankings. Alfano has been consistent enough for a long enough period of time for us to have confidence in his long-term potential.
So he's going to be a 5-star tomorrow?

I said last week after watching Pickens film we must get him if he is going to qualify.
Tremendous body control, balance and focus. Hands are so natural. He'd be an instant impact player like Waddle.

I get that he isn't fast and he doesn't really explode off the line either, but his playmaking ability to go get the ball? Tremendous.

I mean.. maybe he is. Maybe it's just a matter of motivation or whatever at the HS level. But I just don't see it right now. He disappears for incredibly long stretches. Runs like a 4.7 on a good day. Maybe he is able to physically dominate with size and strength and whatnot... and can be motivated to play every down. But he just hasn't shown it at the HS level to be ranked so high. If he ran a 4.4 with that size, I might could see it.

Mike Farrell is a fricking moron. Alfano would have been one of the 5 most athletic DTs at the 2018 NFL combine as a 17 year old HS Jr.

Ishmael Sopsher and Quavaris Crouch dropped out of the Top 10 in the new Rivals' rankings.

Farrell is probably making room to bump moar WRs to 5-stars based on making a few flashy catches at camps.
George Pickens #9 WR maybe, but no way he's the #9 player in the nation across all positions.

LINK ]Where Alabama commits stand as Early Signing Period approaches (BamaOnLine-VIP)
Nutshell: None are thought to be much, if any, risk of flipping. All who haven't already officially visited Bama will do so this weekend, except Eboigbe's Bama OV is the following weekend. None have visits planned to other schools prior to December 19th signing day, except Eboigbe and Ingraham might visit Miami and Neal is expected at UGA this weekend. All have said they plan to sign early, except Keilan Robinson and Christian Williams, but they may end up signing early. If they don't, they could lose their spots.
