Kardell Thomas
Early contenders: LSU (committed), Alabama
Breakdown: Thomas has been committed to LSU since his freshman year and despite many flirtations with the Tide and other programs, has kept that commitment intact, even declaring in January that he was shutting down his recruitment for good. Despite that decree, other schools remain in the mix, with Alabama the only real threat to the Tigers. It seems very unlikely that Thomas will spurn his hometown school to play for the Tide, but don’t expect Nick Saban and company to give up anytime soon.

Evan Neal
Early contenders: Florida, Florida State, Miami, Texas, Alabama, among others
Breakdown: A South Florida native who transferred to IMG Academy last year, Neal’s recruitment is shaping up to be a classic battle between the Big Three is the sunshine state. All three programs have felt good about their standing at different times and the race will likely continue into the spring and summer. Neal has also flirted with Alabama and took a recent visit to Texas, so out of state schools aren’t conceding the race for Neal just yet.

Clay Webb
Early contenders: Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Clemson among others
Breakdown: As a five-star from the state of Alabama, it’s not surprise that an Iron Bowl battle between Alabama and Auburn for Webb’s services is fully underway. But Georgia and Clemson are also in the mix and Webb recently named the quartet of schools as his top four. Can the Bulldogs or Tigers actually steal him away from the in-state powers? It’s an uphill battle for sure. Don’t expect Webb to drag his recruitment out for long, with a decision likely to come by mid-summer.

Gorney's Takeaways: Physical five-star, 2020 class shines in L.A.
quote:
GLENDORA, Calif. - Stop four of the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp Series presented by adidas took place in the Los Angeles area on Sunday and there was plenty of talent from California and surrounding states. Dozens of players made their respective marks on camp, but below are five of the major takeaways from the event.

FLOWE IS SOMETHING ELSE
The talk of the camp was 2020 linebacker Justin Flowe, who absolutely dominated from the first snap until the end even though he was banged up from snowboarding recently. He goes by “Babyman” and that name was being yelled throughout the day because the Upland, Calif., standout is incredibly physical and wants to go after players all the time. He’s big, strong and athletic. Flowe covers like a cornerback and hits like an 18-wheeler. There’s no question he’s one of the best players in his class and it’s hard to believe a lot of linebackers in 2020 could have a bigger impact on the field. As for his recruitment, Flowe is in the early stages. He has 24 offers with Alabama, USC and others leading the way but the 2020 recruit is nowhere near narrowing things down.

STEELE WAY MORE PHYSICAL
Chris Steele has always been good and now the five-star cornerback has gotten much more physical at the line of scrimmage and it’s really paying off. The Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco standout did not let receivers get into their routes, he took one receiver and slammed them to the ground in the first five yards and then he was excellent on not being too handsy later in the route and just tipping passes away. Another thing that stands out about Steele is that he shows up to events every single weekend looking to dominate and enforce his will during every rep. The five-star has been on the circuit for years but Steele never goes through the motions and he always battles everybody every single time he’s on the field.

QUARTERBACKS APLENTY
Ryan Hilinski won the quarterback MVP award and proved he’s one of the better prospects at that position in California but it was an exceptionally tight race and numerous players could have won it. The Orange (Calif.) Lutheran standout got the nod but Santa Clarita (Calif.) West Ranch’s Weston Eget was right there as well. Eget was the surprise of the day, dealing all over the field and definitely creating buzz as he continued to perform throughout the camp. Four-star Hank Bachmeier also looked strong along with four-star Jayden Daniels and then a bunch of 2020 stars looked great. Leading the way was Scottsdale (Ariz.) Chaparral’s Jack Miller, Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco’s D.J. Uiagalelei and Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei’s Bryce Young.

Florida DB wants to visit Alabama and Georgia over spring break
quote:
CELEBRATION, Fla. — Travis Jay is a 6-foot-2, 181 pound defensive back out of Greenville (Ala.) Madison County with double-digit offers. He is a big fan of Florida State and he visited Tallahassee last weekend, but Alabama and Georgia are two other schools on his list that he wants to visit.
He talks about why the Crimson Tide and Bulldogs have his interest.
IN HIS OWN WORDS: "Over spring break, I want to visit Alabama and Georgia," said Jay. "I have not visited either of those schools yet, but I like both of them, so I want to see what it is like there. I want to see if I feel welcome, if I feel at home and if the environment fits me.
"Alabama has always been a great school with great players. They not only coach their players up, but they work hard to make their players great men. The coaches work hard to make their players the best they can be on and off the field and I like that.
"How they win and how they produce top defensive backs is big for Alabama as well.
"With Georgia, I like their style of play. They play fast, they play hard and I like their defense. I talk to coach [Mel] Tucker from Georgia and he is a great coach.
"Both schools like me at cornerback and they like my size."
RIVALS REACTION: Madison County has sent a lot of their top guys over the years to Florida State and the Seminoles are the early favorite for Jay, but he plans to take his time and explore his options. He is very familiar with Tallahassee and the FSU program, so he wants to venture out and see other places. Alabama and Georgia are two schools he really likes. It will be about how he feels when steps foot on their campus. All schools like Jay's size and he has picked off 17 passes in the last two seasons, so his ball skills are appealing too. He does not plan to make an early decision.

Tennessee impresses DT Patrick Lucas on visit: ‘I could just see myself playing there’
quote:
Tennessee impresses Patrick Lucas
The Vols are trying to rebuild their defensive front with big, physical players. The coaching staff did plenty to impress one such prospect in Patrick Lucas this weekend.
The 6-foot-3, 255-pound defensive tackle had never been to Knoxville before the weekend. He enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere with the coaching staff and other prospects.
The visit has made Tennessee a contender for Lucas.
“I could just see myself playing there,” Lucas told SEC Country. “With all the tradition that they have. I can see myself playing there.”
Lucas likes the vision and direction the coaching staff is taking Tennessee. He spent most of his time around the defensive coaches, getting to know them and their plan better.
The Wetumpka, Ala., native has said being a part of building an elite program would really stand out to him.
“[I liked] just how they are down there,” Lucas said. “They really want to build something and start a trend. They are really family-oriented and working really hard to get where they want to be.”
Playing time also will be an important factor in his decision. The Vols’ defensive line depth chart isn’t very clear with spring practice a few weeks away. The new staff has a bigger emphasis on size and run-stopping ability among its defensive linemen, and Lucas fits the mold they are seeking.
Tennessee did about as much as it could to position itself well with Lucas. He didn’t hesitate when asked if he’ll make another trip to Rocky Top.
“Most definitely,” Lucas said.
Other visits
Lucas visited Alabama the weekend prior to his Tennessee visit. Coach Jeremy Pruitt has deep ties to the Alabama program. A few months on the job, and it’s clear he’s taken a lot of what made the Crimson Tide successful and tried to implement it on Rocky Top.
To Lucas, there really was no comparison between the visits, though.
“Tennessee definitely stood out more,” Lucas said. “When I talked to everybody at Alabama, it wasn’t like how I talked to everybody at Tennessee. They didn’t show me a lot of love, but Tennessee showed me a lot. It left an impact on me.”
It’s fair to note Alabama has not offered Lucas and therefore could be why it didn’t pay as much attention to him.
Lucas rates as a 3-star prospect, but has the tenacity and size to potentially become a 4-star this fall. If Alabama turns more attention later to Lucas, the Vols will always have this juxtaposed advantage.
Lucas holds other SEC offers from Auburn, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Missouri, Ole Miss, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt. He already has visited Auburn and plans to visit Vanderbilt soon. He also plans to be at Florida’s spring game on April 14.
A commitment likely won’t be coming soon. He wants to take all of his unofficial visits throughout the spring. A list of his top few schools likely will come around the middle of the summer.
Right now, Tennessee looks to be a lock for the list.

Why any kid with options would consider a dilapidated, probation-ridden program led by an OL coach is beyond me. If I'm an elite recruit, I don't even sniff Ole Miss.

Nakobe Dean, nation’s top inside linebacker, plans on ‘cutting my list down soon’
quote:
The time is drawing near for five-star linebacker Nakobe Dean to begin narrowing his list of college options.
“I’m planning on cutting my list down soon, probably in half because I have 30 offers now. So, I’ll probably cut it down to a top 15,” Dean told GN. “Right now, I’m just trying to get out and visit as many schools as I can and view my options.”
Dean (6 feet 0, 215 pounds) is from Horn Lake (Miss.) High, about 20 miles south of Memphis. He is the No. 1 inside linebacker in the country and a top-25 prospect overall in the class of 2019.
Dean was asked for a sneak peek of his top 15.
“Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and most of the schools I’ve visited a couple times will be in there, but I’ll also have some schools in there that I haven’t visited yet,” he said.
As for when he will make his decision, that will be a while.
“I always told my mom that I would wait until after my senior season, and she will make sure I stick to that,” Dean said. “I’m most likely going to commit after my senior season. I’ll probably commit December 13., which is my birthday.”
Most of Dean’s offers have come in the past year.
“My first camp I went to was Ole Miss, after my freshman year and I didn’t do so well,” Dean said. “Then I went to a camp at Mississippi State and did way better there and started getting looked at.
“I really didn’t start hearing from numerous programs until January after my 10th-grade season. Mississippi State and LSU hopped in there, and I didn’t even know they were watching me. After that, the offers just started rolling in. Most colleges liked my inside linebacker film after my 11th-grade year because I played outside the first two years.”
Dean, who was offered by Stanford this week, has certain things in mind when it comes to his college choice.
“I don’t care about the distance from home,” Dean said. “I won’t say the relationship with coaches, either, because coaches come and go. I look for a school that will prepare me for life after football. A school that will prepare me well academically. It’s all about who you know, not what you know.
“I also look for a good feel from the university. The coaches may change, but the people around you most likely won’t.”
Dean will be busy this spring.
“I plan on visiting Georgia this weekend, and then the weekend after that, which is my spring break I may go to LSU,” he said. “During spring break, I also may go down to Florida and visit my dad and take a trip to the University of Florida. My dad lives in Lakeland, Fla.”

Because Freddie Roach. Ole Miss went from rarely signing Alabama kids to having classes made up nearly 50% Alabama kids.

4-star DE Jaren Handy commits to LSU, but admits recruitment not over
quote:
Ed Orgeron and his LSU staff had a good weekend on the 2019 recruiting trail, adding commitments from three-star linebacker Zach Edwards and four-star defensive end Jaren Handy after each made a weekend visit to Baton Rouge.
GN caught up with Handy to talk about his pledge to LSU.
“I talked about it with Zach Edwards, about how good a fit it would be here,” Handy told GN. “We both said it felt good to be here, so why not go ahead and make it happen?”
Handy (6 feet 5, 260 pounds), from New Augusta (Miss.) Perry Central, about 20 miles southeast of Hattiesburg, is one of the top-10 strongside ends in the country and also is a top-100 prospect overall.
Does the commitment mean he is shutting down his recruitment?
“I’m not going to shut it down just yet,” he said.
When asked if it was fair to say he was committed to LSU but still may look around, Handy replied, “Yes.”
Handy chose LSU over offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi State and Ole Miss, among others. He didn’t get the warmest reception in his home state for crossing state lines.
“Yeah, I’ve got a lot of that,” Handy said. “They have been throwing shade to Coach Orgeron, and people were telling me that they thought I would be one of those kids that stayed in-state and helped us out. It’s tough because I at least thought they would be happy for me.”
Handy said Orgeron is “up front with you and he’s real. I really like that about him.”
He also said a certain former quarterback turned him into an LSU fan.
“I probably liked Alabama more than LSU, but I really started liking LSU when they had Zach Mettenberger at quarterback,” Handy said.
What type of player are the Tigers getting with Handy?
“They are getting a hard-working player who has a good work ethic and is just ready to play,” he said. “I like to rush the passer and stop the run, but I think I’m probably better at rushing the passer.”
LSU now has eight players committed for its 2019 class. Four of the eight are among the top-200 prospects in the country.
