LSU mailbag: Bill Busch impact, Kenyon Green tidbits, DB haul for 2019
quote:
What are your thoughts on Kenyon Green, former LSU commit? Does he come back to the Tigers?
— Ed Tarver (@et52) February 28, 2018
LSU remains in a very good spot with Kenyon Green, the nation’s top-ranked tackle.
In fact, Ed, he was the subject of one of my recruiting notebooks this week. Green, a longtime LSU verbal, de-committed in December as other schools continued to press for a flip as he was making visits to other campuses across the country. He felt it was in his best interest not to be committed as he thoroughly examined all of his options.
At The Opening regional in Houston last weekend, the 5-star tackle gave a top three of Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Alabama, with Texas and LSU two that are pushing to be in that upper echelon. Green has made recent stops at Oklahoma and A&M. LSU could be next.
First-year Tigers offensive line coach James Cregg has made a strong first impression with Green. Green is high on Cregg’s NFL pedigree and the players he coached at the collegiate level, such as Tyron Smith.
Furthermore, sources at LSU believe that they’re in a very good position. Green is likely to make a return visit to campus at some point during the spring. He could make a decision soon after.
Texas A&M is the odds-on favorite for Green. He has a lot of ties to the hometown program and has visited quite a bit in recent months. However, if Cregg continues to develop a relationship with the 2019 Under Armour All-American and impresses him during his next stop to campus, Green could very well fall right back in LSU’s lap.

Top-100 tackle Xavier Truss said 1 school stood out on Southeast tour
quote:
Top-100 tackle says Auburn stood out
Xavier Truss experienced his first recruiting tour to the Southeast last weekend.
The 4-star tackle from Warwick, R.I., came down South for a multi-visit weekend to some top college programs — Clemson, Georgia, Alabama and Auburn, in that order. He capped off the weekend with a return trip to Penn State, a program he’d never visited.
It’s early in the 6-foot-7, 325-pound tackle’s recruitment, but one part of the Southeast swing made the biggest impression on Truss.
“Auburn probably stood out the most to me out of the Southern schools because I had no idea going into Auburn what to think, and e,” Truss told SEC Country. “I had already been to Penn State and had a feel for them, but out of the schools I had no experience with, Auburn took the cake.
“I just felt incredibly comfortable on campus at Auburn and comfortable around everyone there.”
Truss’ communication with the Tigers began last year through then-offensive line coach Herb Hand.
Hand’s departure left Truss with no point of contact at Auburn. New offensive line coach J.B. Grimes re-initiated the recruitment of Truss, which came at a perfect time given Truss’ travel plans. Auburn squeezed its way into the conversation, and by the end of the weekend it had made a major move for Truss.
“I had a blast at Auburn, Coach [J.B.] Grimes is a really great man, and I actually got to learn a lot about what goes into molding an Auburn football player academically and athletically,” Truss said. “I was talking with Coach Hand before he went to Texas and was really excited about Auburn, but unfortunately had no contact with any other coaches after he left. So when I got a text from Coach Grimes I was so excited to get down there.
“I feel like I learned a lot about the program in one day from academics to athletics that I had no idea about, so it was really fulfilling.”
Truss isn’t in a hurry to make a decision, which likely plays in Auburn’s favor, as well as other programs with which he’s less familiar.
The 4-star tackle said he’d like to make a decision after his senior season, though he’s already starting to narrow his list of top schools. Truss will take a few more visits to Big Ten programs this spring, but nothing is set in stone.
A return trip to the Plains is almost a guarantee.
“I want to get down there again to get a chance to see the liveliness on game day,” Truss said.
Truss is the No. 99 overall player in the nation, and the No. 13 tackle.

The Opening Finals moving to Dallas for 2018
quote:
The biggest recruiting showcase in the country will have a new home later this summer.
The Opening Finals are moving from Beaverton, Ore., to Dallas, Texas.
The Finals are the culmination of eight regional competitions from around the country that will take place during the spring.
Student Sports, the organization that runs The Opening, will select the top 166 high school football players in the nation “after film evaluation and/or in-person evaluation at one of The Opening Regionals or Rating Days.” Only that athletes who receive an invite will get to go to Dallas.
After previously taking place at Nike headquarters in Beaverton, The Opening Finals this year will be held from June 30th through July 3rd in Dallas. While the exact location has not been announced yet, based on the video above, the event will likely take place either at the Dallas Cowboys practice facility or at AT&T Stadium.
Quarterback Justin Fields, the No. 2 overall prospect in the nation for the 2018 class and early enrollee at Georgia, earned MVP honors at The Opening Finals last summer.

Tennessee hoping 5-star lineman’s relationship with assistant coach pays off
quote:
Anyone who follows recruiting knows it often comes down who the recruit has the best relationships, with and this can benefit Tennessee.
One relationship, in particular, has put Tennessee in a potential place to flip Alabama commit Pierce Quick, according to Rivals’ Chad Simmons.
Coach Jeremy Pruitt brought with him a staff member from Alabama, which has opened the door for Tennessee. Quick plans to visit Knoxville this weekend despite being committed to the Crimson Tide for about 10 months.
“This will be my first time ever in Tennessee, so I am ready for it,” Quick told Simmons. “I knew Coach Pruitt, but he wasn’t really a coach I knew that well at Alabama, but me and Coach [Brian] Niedermeyer were extremely close.
“Every time I would visit Alabama, I would be around him, we would talk a lot and we were super tight. So, him being at Tennessee is something that is pretty cool and we still have a good relationship.”
Niedermeyer has the least experience on a young coaching staff. He brings great energy and a work ethic that won over Pruitt while they were at Alabama.
This seems to have charmed Quick, as well.
Tennessee needs to rebuild its depleted offensive line in a hurry. Quick can go a long way in aiding the effort. He rates as a 5-star tackle and the No. 25 prospect in the country, according to the 247Sports composite.
The Vols’ main pitch this weekend and moving forward is a better chance at early playing time. With his talent, that’s not too surprising.
Niedermeyer has also pushed for Quick to develop a relationship with offensive line coach Will Friend. He’s a good recruiter in his own right.
“He is really a cool guy and his grandparents are from Trussville (Ala.), so that is pretty cool,” Quick said. “He has been recruiting me hard and he knows the area I am from, so we will talk more when I get up there.”
Having as many strong relationships as possible will be important the later his recruitment gets.
The 6-foot-5, 285-pound Alabama native won’t be an easy flip from the Crimson Tide. When a talent like his leaves a slight chance, though, it’s wise to pursue it.

Auburn recruiting question of the day: Top lesser-known prospect in Alabama
Patrick Lucas Highlights
Any of you Wetumpka baws care to comment on this kid?
quote:
who is the top in-state (Alabama not Georgia for you SEC Country homers) that I don't know much about?
— Drew Champlin (@DrewChamplin) February 27, 2018
Thanks for stopping by again, Drew.
This feels like a trick question since I don’t know who you don’t know much about, and I’m assuming you know much about several of the in-state guys. I also received a question from @_RCB3 on Twitter that ties somewhat into this about under-the-radar prospects who Auburn views more favorably than other programs right now. I’ll answer that one more specifically later in the week.
For Drew’s question, it’s somewhat dependent on what he defines as “top” and what he defines as not knowing much about. I’ll take the liberty of making those assumptions on Drew’s behalf.
There is one specific in-state target who has already been offered by Auburn, but he hasn’t yet been offered by Alabama. I’d expect him to pick up an offer from the Crimson Tide, so from that standpoint — as someone offered by Auburn and Alabama — he’d be a top in-state target.
As far as not knowing much about him, I figure Drew’s knowledge of the Birmingham area to be a little bit stronger than his familiarity with Wetumpka, Ala., which is where this prospect calls home, so I’ll assume you don’t know a ton about him, at least.
His name is Patrick Lucas Jr., a 3-star defensive tackle.
Lucas visited Auburn for its initial junior day on Feb. 3. He’s considering a return trip for the second junior day this upcoming weekend, though he’s trying to take visits to a couple other programs, too. Outside of Auburn, Lucas holds offers from Florida, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Mississippi State and Tennessee. Alabama and Georgia are the primary Power 5 programs who have communicated, but haven’t offered.
Once spring evaluations rolls around, that’s likely to change.
Lucas didn’t hold an Auburn offer when he made his first junior day visit. When he left, he had this to say about an offer: “They didn’t tell me anything. I just talked to Coach [Kevin] Steele and Coach [Rodney] Garner, and they told me to stay in contact and build a relationship. … It’s the in-state school. I thought it would be nice to check it out and see what it’s all about.”
Within three days, Steele and Garner checked out Lucas’ film in more detail and offered. As someone who grew up an Alabama fan, Lucas likely will try a similar approach with the Crimson Tide. If that happens, an in-state defensive tackle battle — much like the race for Coynis Miller — will begin.
By that time, Drew, you’ll know plenty about him.

Alabama’s 2019 wide receivers class will be small while featuring big targets
quote:
Alabama wrapped up its 2018 recruiting class with 19 signees, which was the seventh-ranked class in the country and second-best in the SEC, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Full attention now turns to the 2019 class. Over the course of the next two weeks, SEC Country will look at each position group on offense and defense for the Class of 2019. Here is a look at wide receivers.
Returners/newcomers: Derek Kief (redshirt senior), Xavian Marks (senior), Jerry Jeudy (sophomore), Henry Ruggs (sophomore), DeVonta Smith (sophomore), Tyrell Shavers (redshirt freshman), Chadarius Townsend (redshirt freshman), Slade Bolden (freshman), Jaylen Waddle (freshman), Xavier Williams (freshman)
Departures before or after 2018 season: Kief and Marks
How many commits at position: 0
How many receivers Alabama plans to take: 2-3
Main targets: 5-star prospect Frank Ladson, 4-star prospects Devonta Lee, Arjei Henderson, Jake Smith, Theo Wease Jr.
Importance of more blue-chip additions (1-10): 2
The breakdown: Wide receiver is one of the deepest and youngest position groups in Tuscaloosa. Alabama had three freshmen ball out last season at the position in Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs and DeVonta Smith, who caught the game-winning touchdown in the National Championship Game. Those guys are likely going to be the starters at wide receiver this season.
Alabama added one of the most dynamic recruits in the 2018 class in Jaylen Waddle. Expect him to get playing time as a freshman.
We haven’t seen what Tyrell Shavers or Chadarius Townsend can do just yet, but Shavers is a big-bodied, fast receiver who impressed me when he was going through the recruiting process. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him get lots of action.
With the wide receiver room being young, I don’t expect a large number of commitments at the position. I see two or three receivers being added in the 2019 class. Alabama will focus on at least one of the players being a big-bodied receiver after missing on top target Justyn Ross to Clemson in the 2018 class.
Frank Ladson fits the big-bodied receiver profile. He’s 6-foot-4. Auburn commit George Pickens also fits the profile. Pickens, a 4-star prospect from Hoover (Ala.) High School, doesn’t have an Alabama offer yet, but he will likely get one.
Devonta Lee is a big target for Alabama. He was offered by the Tide last weekend. Lee was a teammate of DeVonta Smith at Amite (La.) High School. Lee is very close to Smith.
Arjei Henderson has Alabama in his top 3 along with Oklahoma and Texas A&M. Jake Smith visited Tuscaloosa earlier this year.
This list definitely will evolve in the coming months as camp season gets underway.

Every Bama player recruited during Saban's tenure owns at least one National Title ring.
ETA: Except a couple of 2-year players (Leon Brown and Gehrig Dieter) that only got SEC Title rings, as poster remaster916 searched to find and point out (below). So, a better way to say it:
Every Bama recruiting class during Saban's tenure has won at least one National Title.

Meet The 2019 Class: Running Backs
Fair warning, they didn't list Quavaris Crouch in their Top 5 because they have him ranked as an Athlete.

The 2019 class is officially on the clock and with the early Signing Period just about nine months away and the first opportunity for prospects to take official visits coming this spring, it’s time for recruiting fans from across the country to start familiarizing themselves with the class of 2019.
We at Rivals.com are here to help. Over the next two weeks, we will introduce the top five players at each position in the class. Today we take a lot at running backs.

Trey Sanders
Early contenders: Alabama, Miami, Florida State, Georgia, Ohio State, among others
Breakdown: Sanders had been committed to Alabama for quite some time, only to re-open his recruitment in December. The news came as a surprise to some but like most recruits who commit very early in their high school careers, Sanders was feeling like he might be missing out on the recruiting experience. Since he’s been back on the market Miami as emerged as a contender, while other programs are working to get him on campus for visits this spring. Alabama is still the odds-on favorite but Sanders is expected to take his time before making another commitment.

It's fairly likely Quavaris Crouch ends up playing LB -- like Dylan Moses. His recruitment might become mainly a Bama vs Clemson battle.

Leon Brown???
Part of the 13 recruiting class, played during the 13 and 14 seasons. No national title ring, but did get a SEC Championship ring in 14.
He is the only player Saban has signed that has graduated from Bama that did not get a natty ring.
Gehrig Dieter is the only other player that has graduated from Bama that has no natty ring, but has a SEC Championship ring. He however, was a grad transfer.

Alabama’s 2019 tight end targets feature brother of current NFL player
Hudson Henry is rated as the nation's No. 1 tight end according to the 247Sports composite.
Notes: Henry, Zipperer and Lowe seem like pretty tough pulls. 4-star TE Isaiah Foskey, 6-5/235, Concord, CA, is another top target and may also be a tough pull. 4-star WR Devonta Lee, 6-2/212, Amite, LA, is a fast (4.41/40-yd) big bodied WR who also projects well to line up as an HB or Flex TE. Lee is currently a heavy lean to Bama.

Departures before or after 2018 season: Hentges
How many current commits: 0
How many Bama plans to take: 1
Main targets: 4-star prospects Hudson Henry, Keon Zipperer; 3-star prospects Jackson Lowe, Baylor Cupp.
Importance of additions (1-10): 1
The breakdown: Alabama returns all of its tight ends from last season where the position group shined in numerous games. The Tide’s tight ends over past years have shown excellent blocking skills while making key receptions in key moments (see O.J. Howard in the national championship on two different occasions).
Smith Jr. collected 14 receptions and a touchdown, while Hentges was mainly a blocking tight end. Forristall returns after tearing his ACL last season. We haven’t seen much of James or Tennison yet and Parker will join the team this summer.
There’s no clear top target at tight end in the 2019 class just yet. The players listed above, though, are all names to watch.
Henry, the nation’s top tight end, is the brother of former Arkansas great and current San Diego Charger tight end Hunter Henry.
Zipperer should be considered a Florida lean as of now.
Lowe attends Forristall’s alma mater, Cartersville (Ga.) HS. His decision could come down to Clemson, where his former QB Trevor Lawrence enrolled in January, and Alabama.
Cupp was just offered earlier this week, but I’ve been told that he is definitely a name to watch and his stock should rise in the coming months.
