LINK ]Watch: Top-100 2020 prospect Malachi Moore makes college choice (BOL | embedded video)

quote:

After collecting more than 20 verbal scholarship offers throughout the college football recruiting process, Malachi Moore cut his list to six programs in early August.

The Trussville (Ala.) Hewitt-Trussville cornerback, rated four stars in the class of 2020 to this point, narrowed his choices to in-state rivals Alabama, Auburn, defending ACC champion Clemson, LSU, Florida and Tennessee on August 2.

That list has now been cut further, from a half-dozen down to just one.

In an exclusive with 247Sports, the 6-foot, 170-pound prospect is showcased before announcing a verbal commitment to the program he intends on signing a National Letter of Intent with for the class of 2020.

Moore, ranked the top cornerback in the Yellowhammer State among junior football prospects, also plays on the Husky basketball team. His father played basketball at Middle Tennessee State University and stands 6-foot-5, a part of the reason many view the young prospect as a high-ceiling candidate.

"Malachi has a great work ethic, he's a great teammate." Hewitt-Trussville head coach Josh Floyd told 247Sports. "He's always been a guy that's committed to whatever he does.

"He's a very good basketball player as well, so no matter what season he is in, he gives his all there. He's able to balance both sports really well. His dad played Division I basketball, so he's got a rich history there."

As a defensive back, Moore plays with consistency and physicality while flashing ball skills, according to Hewitt-Trussville defensive coordinator Rudy Griffin.

"Malachi is one of the best cornebacks in the country," he said. "His work ethic has led him to that. He's one of the guy's that lead our DB school, which is stuff we do after practice. Not only that, he's a competitor, Malachi doesn't like to lose. One of his better attributes is his ball skills. As a defensive back, to have great ball skills, is a premium, and Malachi has that."

On Friday night's, Moore is often slotted on the offensive side of the football as well, mainly at wide receiver. He helped the Huskies to an undefeated regular season for the second straight year in 2017. The program reached the second round of the Class 7A playoffs, the highest level in the state of Alabama, before falling to eventual state champion Hoover (Ala.) High.

The Huskies open up the 2018 slate Saturday, August 25, against Ellenwood (Ga.) Cedar Grove High School. Moore will presumably be matched up with class of 2019 five-star wide receiver and current Georgia commitment, Jadon Haselwood.

Moore is considered the nation's No. 148 junior football prospect, according to the 247Sports Composite, checking in as the No. 13 cornerback. On 247Sports, he sits within the top 100 overall, at No. 87 and also the No. 3 overall junior in the state of Alabama rankings.

Just need to flip Story and Alabama will have the entire in-state Top 5 locked up for 2020.

I would like to see Roydell Williams, Story and Ashford (depending on how the Harrison Bailey recruitment shakes out) to close out in state for 2020.

LINK ]Tide climbs to #2 in 2020 recruiting rankings (BamaOnLine)

quote:

With 4-star cornerback Malachi Moore joining the Crimson Tide’s 2020 class on Monday morning, Alabama climbs to No. 2 in the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings.

Miami currently leads the pack with 12 commitments and a score of 216.22. Alabama sits with seven pledges, good for a total of 158.15 points. The Tide has a higher per/commit average of 94.20 to the Hurricanes’ 91.77.

Just like Bama’s 2019 recruiting efforts, 2020 has seen an uptick in momentum since the start of the spring. Here’s a look at the class’ current makeup:

Jayson Jones, 4-star DT, Calera, AL

The state of Alabama’s No. 1 player, Jones joined the fold early last month, committing to the Crimson Tide over Georgia. The 6-foot-5, 322-pounder is rated the No. 3 defensive tackle and the No. 44 overall player in the country, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Dazalin Worsham, 4* WR, Trussville, AL

Worsham is one of four Alabama commitments currently at Hewitt-Trussville joining Moore, 5-star offensive tackle Pierce Quick and 4-star quarterback Paul Tyson. The elite wideout committed to Alabama back in April over nearly two dozen offers. He is rated the No. 13 receiver and the No. 76 overall player in the country.

Jackson Bratton, 4-star ILB, Muscle Shoals, AL

The in-state linebacker kicked off the Tide’s recruiting momentum in March when he committed to the program over Auburn and Ole Miss. The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder is rated the No. 3 inside linebacker and the No. 113 overall player in the country.

Javier Morton, 4-star CB, Stone Mountain, GA

Morton holds the honors of the original commitment in the Tide’s 2020 class after jumping onboard last December. Morton is rated the No. 12 cornerback and the No. 125 overall player in the country.

Malachi Moore, 4-star CB, Trussville, AL

The Tide’s latest commitment, Moore chose his childhood favorite over Auburn, Tennessee and Florida, among many others. Moore is rated the No. 13 cornerback and the No. 148 overall player in the country.

Carson Beck, 4* QB, Jacksonville, FL

A one-time Florida baseball commitment, Beck flipped to the Crimson Tide back in June. The 6-foot-3.5, 214-pounder, who is getting set to embark on his first season as a full-time starter, is rated the No. 9 pro-style quarterback and the No. 216 overall player.

Caden Clark, 3-star TE, Akron, OH

The 6-foot-3, 257-pound Clark joined the Tide’s class after a visit for the Champions Cookout at the end of July. He is rated the No. 6 tight end and the No. 341 overall player in the country.

Alabama has a prime opportunity to overtake the one spot down the line as it is in strong position with several 5-star recruits in the 2020 class.

Recruits, coaches react to Alabama's latest commit
quote:

Alabama added commitment No. 7 to its 2020 class on Monday morning in 4-star cornerback Malachi Moore. The Hewitt-Trussville product's pledge pushed the Tide to the No. 2 spot in the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings.

Moore is the fourth Alabama pledge from the Hewitt-Trussville (Ala.) program. He joins 5-star offensive tackle Pierce Quick and 4-star quarterback Paul Tyson, both in the 2019 class, as well as 2020 4-star wide receiver Dazalin Worsham.

“I feel like it was the right fit,” Moore told 247Sports of why he chose the Crimson Tide. “I have good relationships with all the coaches, especially the defensive backs coach (Karl Scott), and just the legacy they have and winning and putting my position in the league.”

quote:

The in-state defensive back grew up a fan of Alabama, so when the offer came down in June following a standout camp performance, it didn't take long for him to make up his mind.

“It was my dad’s first time meeting Coach Saban and first time being on campus and talking to all the coaches,” Moore said of July's Champions Cookout, an event that ultimately sealed the deal on his commitment. “It just felt like we were part of the family when we were there, everybody was comfortable. I talked to them about it and they were cool with it and felt like it was the right decision.”

Understandably, many Alabama commitments, coaches, and fellow recruits were excited to hear the news. See what they had to say on Twitter.

A fellow Alabama pledge and Hewitt-Trussville (Ala.) Husky, Worsham joined the Crimson Tide's class back in April on an unofficial visit to Tuscaloosa for A-Day. The pair of 2020 prospects join 5-star offensive tackle Pierce Quick and 4-star quarterback as a Husky quartet of Alabama commits. Similar to Moore, Worsham grew up a fan of the Tide and didn't wait long to hop aboard after picking up an offer back in January. Nearly two dozen other programs offered the 4-star wideout. Worsham is rated the No. 13 receiver and the No. 76 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Morton is the original member of Alabama's 2020 class. The 4-star cornerback from Stone Mountain (Ga.) Stephenson committed to Alabama back in December over several offers from programs like Auburn, Georgia and LSU. The Peach State defensive back has stayed firm in his commitment despite opting to continue taking visits elsewhere. At 6-foot-1, 175 pounds, Morton is rated the No. 12 cornerback and the No. 125 overall player in the country, according the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Rankings. 247Sports is a little bit higher on Morton than the industry average, ranking him the No. 10 cornerback and the No. 96 overall player in the country.

ALABAMA CB COMMIT BRANDON TURNAGE

Turnage was another big commitment that joined Alabama'a class last December. The 4-star athlete from Oxford (Miss.) Lafayette projects to play safety in Tuscaloosa. There is a lot of chatter that Turnage will eventually reopen his recruitment and flip to Ole Miss -- he does after all live in Oxford, Miss -- however, Turnage himself has quelled those rumors by making three separate visits to Alabama over the course of the summer and maintaining that he's firm in his pledge. At 6-foot-1, 185 pounds, Turnage is rated the No. 8 athlete and the No. 113 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Rankings.

ALABAMA OL COACH BRENT KEY

And it won’t stop...! LINK — Coach Brent Key (@CoachBrentKey) August 13, 2018

Alabama offensive line coach Brent Key, a Hewitt-Trussville alumni, is the primary recruiter for the loaded high school program and is credited with landing Moore. Key has also led the charge on 5-star offensive tackle Pierce Quick, 4-star quarterback Paul Tyson and 2020 4-star receiver Dazalin Worsham. Since joining the staff a couple years back, Key has been one of the Tide's top recruiters out on the trail credited with landing several big-time players, including Jedrick Wills in the 2017 cycle. Key has been instrumental in helping put together the Tide's current 2019 offensive line haul, and will play a big role in 5-star center Clay Webb's decision should he choose the Tide.

‘20 Keeps on ROLL’N.......#rolltide — Josh Gattis (@Coach_Gattis) August 13, 2018

First-year Tide assistant Josh Gattis has infused a renewed energy onto the Tide staff since coming aboard earlier this year. The former Penn State assistant has been credited with landing several major recruits include elite defensive lineman Antonio Alfano, 4-star defensive lineman Justin Eboigbe and 4-star receiver John Metchie. Gattis has also seemingly boosted the Alabama coaching staff's presence on Twitter often Tweeting out tips, highlights, Alabama graphics and always making comments on big recruiting news like he's done here. Gattis wasn't the primary nor secondary recruiter for Moore, but he's certainly a coach on the staff that's built relationships with recruits outside just his territory or position group.

ALABAMA OL COMMIT PIERCE QUICK

The longtime Alabama commit was the first from Hewitt-Trussville to join the Tide's 2019 class way back in April of 2017. The 5-star offensive lineman has been a big boost to the Tide's recruiting efforts outside of just the coaching staff. Quick was on campus seemingly every weekend he was able to over the summer recruiting for Alabama. He did the same in his time at The Opening Finals early last month getting in the ear of guys like 5-star offensive tackle Darnell Wright and 5-star running back Trey Sanders. Of course, the in-state lineman also played a big part in Alabama landing his teammates Paul Tyson, Dazalin Worsham and Moore. Expect Quick to continue leading the 2019 class as he's done for well over a year now.

ALABAMA QB COMMIT PAUL TYSON

Congrats brooo #RollTide LINK — Paul Tyson (@Paul_Tyson17) August 13, 2018

Tyson is one of two quarterback commits in Alabama's 2019 class joining 4-star signal caller Taulia Tagovailoa. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Tyson committed back in April after the Tide extended an offer last December. Like Quick, Tyson hasn't slacked in the recruiting department getting in on the action shortly after committing. If you follow Alabama recruiting, you know who Tyson is related to. The great-grandson of Paul "Bear" Bryant has, however, stepped out of his great-grandfather's shadow to make his own name for himself. Last season, his first as a varsity starter, Tyson passed for nearly 3,400 yards and 36 touchdowns.

FOUR-STAR QB ROBBY ASHFORD

my boy congrats bro!! LINK — Robby Ashford (@robby_ashford) August 13, 2018

Alabama has a 2020 quarterback commitment already in its class in Carson Beck. Ashford, however, will be an interesting name to watch. Similar to Paul Tyson last season, the 4-star signal caller is expected to take the reigns of the high-powered Hoover offense this fall after recovering from an offseason shoulder surgery. Ashford has all the traits a coach could want in a quarterback prospect with his size and athleticism. The rising in-state signal caller has already earned several Power Five offers, however, Alabama has yet to pull the trigger. With a solid junior season campaign, that could certainly change.

FIVE-STAR SF TRENDON WATFORD

Congrats Lil bro LINK — Trendon Watford (@Trendon_2) August 13, 2018

Top Alabama hoops target Trendon Watford got in on the congratulatory Tweets to Moore. The 4-star cornerback also plays basketball. The 5-star Watford earned an Alabama offer way back in the summer of 2015 heading into his ninth grade season. As of late, it's been Memphis trending on the 247Sports Crystal Ball with the new Tigers staff in place led by Penny Hardaway. The good news for the Tide in Watford's recruitment is that the Mountain Brook (Ala.) product doesn't plan to make a decision until late. The Tide's basketball recruiting efforts have picked up in recent weeks. On Friday, former 247Sports 5-star point guard Kira Lewis committed to Alabama and reclassified to join Bama this fall.
