WATCH: Alabama QB commits Taulia Tagovailoa and Paul Tyson compete at Elite 11 7-on-7 competition

quote:

REDONDO BEACH, Calif. – The Elite 11 Finals concluded on Sunday afternoon and Alabama quarterback commitments Taulia Tagovailoa and Paul Tyson await their fate to see if they get invited to The Opening Finals later this month.

Heading into Sunday’s 7-on-7 competition, Tagovailoa was ranked No. 8 out of 24 quarterbacks in attendance. The Elite 11 directors only rank the top 11 QBs, and Tyson wasn’t included in the top 11.

Unofficially, Tyson was 10-of-16 with two touchdowns. His receivers dropped two additional touchdown passes. Tagovailoa was 12-of-17 with three touchdowns.

Check out the highlights of the quarterbacks above.

Auburn has ‘definitely got a shot’ for Maryland safety Nick Cross after official visit

quote:

AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn is known for its recruiting territory of Alabama, Georgia and Florida. The Tigers typically only step outside of that coverage area for prospects they see as elite-level talents.

For Big Cat Weekend, Auburn only hosted one official visitor: Nick Cross from Maryland.

Cross knew when he heard from Auburn coaches about an official visit that he needed to take a trip to the Plains. It’s not often coaches from the Southeastern Conference make their way to Maryland in search of top defensive backs.

“Just because [safeties] Coach [Greg] Brown and the staff expressed interest in me. As a kid up north, you don’t see them come up north too often. They offered me an official, so I wanted to take it and test out the environment,” Cross said. “It definitely raised their chances. It exceeded my expectation of what it would be. Auburn’s definitely got a shot.”

Cross’ official visit intersected with Big Cat Weekend. He had his own schedule somewhat separate from the event, but he took part in some of those festivities, as well.

Cross felt that helped Auburn’s chances because it allowed him to see coaches and players in a different light than he’s seen at other universities.

“It’s just the family environment,” Cross said. “I never talked to assistants as much as I do here. The GAs and assistants are all great people to hang out with. The players carry themselves very well. It was nice to see the players and how they carry themselves.”

This marked the second official visit for the DeMatha Cathloic (Md.) safety. He had already been to Florida. Cross will return to the state of Alabama next weekend to check out the Crimson Tide. The week after that he’ll be back down south again for an official visit to Florida State.

Those are the four schools to keep an eye on right now.

He would like to make a decision before his senior season.

If Auburn has a chance, which Cross is adamant it does, it’ll be because of the relationship and national acclaim.

“Big stage. The SEC West is the best conference in college football. They send a lot of players to the league. It’s a great environment. It should be good football. I just want something different than what I’m used to seeing up north,” Cross said. “Auburn’s definitely there with some of the top schools.”

Alabama’s Offer Gives Michael Redding A Sense of Accomplishment

quote:

After a great talk with Nick Saban, Michael Redding now holds an offer from Alabama.

“Alabama’s offer made me feel accomplished,” Redding said. “It made me feel as if all my hard work was finally paying off.”

Redding is one of the top wide receivers in the 2020 recruiting class. He is a product of high school powerhouse, IMG Academy.

The dynasty that Nick Saban has built in Tuscaloosa has produced several NFL players, but Redding is more impressed with the Tide’s player development as a whole.

“Alabama’s player development is amazing,” Redding added. “They often send guys to the NFL, but not only that, if you don’t go pro, you are put in a position to do something after college.”

Redding got a chance to see some of the Tide’s newest facilities around the campus, where Saban himself ensured him that Alabama has some of the top facilities in the nation.

The IMG Academy product will continue to have a productive offseason as he plans to visit many camps. He expressed that Alabama offer is huge, but he is still just enjoying the recruiting process.

It is safe to say Alabama is in a good position with Redding. Touchdown Alabama Magazine will keep you updated on his recruitment.

Alabama’s Offer is Huge for Clark Phillips and His Family

quote:

Clark Phillips was very excited to visit the University of Alabama for the first time on Saturday and the Tide’s offer made the experience that much better for the California-native.

The Tide’s coaching staff hosted a private camp for some of their elite visitors and that was where Phillips got his chance to shine as an athlete.

“I actually got a chance to compete in a private football camp with a couple of more great players,” Phillips said. “We did some drills, ran 40’s and I got the chance to solidify the player that I am. After a long talk with coach Saban and coach Lupoi, I was told I received the full ride.”

Phillips is a 4-Star cornerback out of La Habra, California. He holds offers from several top schools, including SEC school, Florida.

The California-native knows all too well what an Alabama offer means.

“I have always dreamed about having the opportunity to play for Alabama,” Phillips said. “With me being a cornerback and with Saban being the G.O.A.T of college football, This is huge for my family and I.”

Phillips’ family has some ties to the state of Alabama. He has family members that reside inside the state, but his mother has a very special connection to the yellowhammer state.

“My mother was born in Alabama,” Phillips said. “She really likes Alabama and loves the university.”

The Crimson Tide were able to give Phillips a complete tour of the campus. He got to see many of the Crimson Tide’s facilities.

The Tide’s latest offer gives Phillips some things to think about.

“Alabama was already really high on my board,” Phillips added. “But I am also still young. I’m only a sophomore and I am just learning about the recruitment process. I am just trying to learn as much as possible about different schools.

Elite 11 Finals: Weekend top performers (247 Sports)

quote:

LOS ANGELES -- The third and final day of the Elite 11 Finals wrapped up from Redondo (Calif.) Union High School in Southern California with the 7-on-7 portion of the event.

Twenty-four of the nation’s top quarterbacks were in the Southland this weekend in hopes of being one of the 12 signal callers invited to The Opening Finals in Dallas, where the prestigious competition takes place June 29 through July 3.

Sunday was the passing competition against a live 7-on-7 defense, where all 24 participants had 15 minutes to orchestrate their offense and attempt as many 40-yard drives as possible.

The following rankings take the 7-on-7 portion into account, but also factors in Saturday's pro-day workout that was scored on a point system for accuracy, delivery and timing, and also how each quarterback fared Friday through a variety of drills and footwork stations. This list of 12 is based solely on the three-day performance from the weekend -- it's not necessarily a list of our 12 best college prospects.

Here is 247Sports' look at the top performers from all three days at the Elite 11 Finals.

NO. 7 TAULIA TAGOVAILOA, ALABASTER (ALA.) THOMPSON

Committed to Alabama. When you’re talking about pure arm talent, not many can rip it like Tagovailoa. He’s another QB who was hurt with drops Sunday and was late on a few reads but had an overall solid workout that should get him to Dallas, Texas for the finals.

The guy who wrote that was generally down on Taulia today compared to others I saw on Twitter, but admitted to not watching him really and managed to, um, blame him?, for drops? Taulia apparently went 12/17 with 3 TDs, no INTs, and 2 or 3 drops.

I’m a fan of Taulia but was on a different field from him, when I saw him , he struggled with drops and throwing late, still would be in my top 12 for the week.

As far as I know, the official top 11 hasn't been released. However, it seems likely that Taulia will make it to Dallas for The Opening/Elite 11 Finals and Tyson will not.

Anybody have any thoughts or predictions about who we end up with in regards to WR/DBs. I know we have a long way to go and things are fluid (especially with so many guys who can play db and wr) but was just interested in what people thought. These seems like the position groups with the widest variance in who number of spots and possible players.

Receivers & Tight Ends (1-3)
4* WR/S Brandon Turnage 6-1/185 (MS) hudl
4* WR/S Milton Wright 6-3/195 (KY) hudl
4* WR/S Zion Puckett 6-1/195 (GA) hudl
4* WR Mycah Pittman 6-1/195 (CA) hudl
4* WR John Metchie 6-0/195 (MD) hudl
4* TE Keon Zipperer 6-3/230 (FL) hudl
4* TE Ethan Rae 6-5/240 (CA) hudl

Defensive Backs (3-4)
4* CB Christian Williams 6-1/185 (AL) hudl
4* S/WR Devonta Lee 6-2/212 (LA) hudl
5* S/NB Daxton Hill 6-1/187 (OK) hudl
4* S/WR DeMarcco Hellams 6-1/203 (MD) hudl
4* S/NB Nick Cross 6-1/205 (MD) hudl
4* S Jaylen McCollough 6-1/190 (GA) hudl
4* CB/S Noa Pola-Gates 6-2/180 (AZ) hudl
4* CB Tyrique Stevenson 6-0/190 (FL) hudl
4* CB Jeffery Carter 6-0/180 (TX) hudl
5* CB Akeem Dent 5-11/176 (FL) hudl
5* CB Andrew Booth 6-1/188 (GA) hudl

It is a little crazy because even with 12-14 spots to fill it already feels like we are facing a numbers crunch. I was listing my top 12 and all types of great players who we could get I couldn't fit on my list (Pola-Gates, Handy, Diabete etc.) . Bama problems

They just released the list of 11 that were invited. Taulia was one of the eleven and Tyson was not.

Here’s the article:

It's official: Field of 2018 Elite 11 Quarterbacks released

quote:

Taulia Tagovailoa, Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson – Undersized but instinctive and accurate with the football, Tagovailoa also has one of the top arms in the country and showed it off over the weekend. The younger brother of Tua, Tualia is committed to Alabama. 247Sports Composite Pro-Style Ranking: 8.
