Antonio Alfano committing on May 18
A few days ago, I wrote a story breaking down who may be next to select Alabama after the Crimson Tide’s recent run of commitments. On that list was Antonio Alfano, a 4-star defensive end from Colonia (N.J.) High School.
Alfano will make his decision on May 18 at 3 p.m. ET. I spoke with Alfano shortly after his last visit to Tuscaloosa in mid-April. It was clear to me then that Alabama was the team to beat. He told me shortly after his visits to Alabama and Georgia that he would release his top schools, and both SEC schools and Penn State would be his only finalists. But this is mainly a battle between the Crimson Tide and Nittany Lions.

A big difference between his trips to Tuscaloosa and Athens, and why the Tide have an advantage, is that Alfano didn’t get a chance to spend time with Georgia’s players. He spent just one day at Georgia, and it was a rushed visit because of that.
Alfano spent two days in Tuscaloosa and had the opportunity to hang out with Isaiah Buggs, Raekwon Davis and Anfernee Jennings. Having a bond with the players is something important to him. It’s also clear that he wants to play for an established, winning program.
“I definitely want to go to a school that is already there and has been there,” Alfano said. “I wouldn’t have a problem going to a school that is on the rise, either. I think the advantage of going to a college that has been there is that they already know what it takes to get there every year. … There’s no beating around the bush. Alabama knows what it takes. If you do everything they tell you, you are going to become a monster.”
RELATED: Alfano moved up his commitment date after visiting Alabama
One of the biggest questions Alfano had about Alabama was whether he had a chance to play early. The coaching staff has broken down the depth chart to him and reminded him that the Tide failed to sign a true defensive end in the 2018 class. Tevita Musika is strictly a nose guard and Stephon Wynn and Christian Barmore are defensive tackles. Isaiah Buggs and Johnny Dwight will exhaust their eligibility after this season and Raekwon Davis is a likely candidate to declare early for the NFL draft.
In 2019, the Tide will have LaBryan Ray, Quinnen Williams, Phidarian Mathis, Wynn, Barmore and Musika on the defensive line plus whichever recruits they sign this class, so the opportunity to make an early impact is attainable for a Class of 2019 recruit such as Alfano.

Another thing working in the Tide’s favor is his relationship with wide receivers coach Josh Gattis, who was recruiting him when he coached at Penn State. The nation’s No. 5 strongside defensive end also spent a lot of time with Nick Saban, defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi and defensive line coach Craig Kuligowski when he was in town.
Alfano has the ability and athleticism to play numerous positions. While Alabama wants him on the defensive line, some schools are recruiting Alfano to play tight end or linebacker.
The 6-foot-4, 285-pound prospect has shown himself to be a testing warrior in camps. At the Nike New Jersey Opening regional event, Alfano posted eye-popping numbers. He ran a 4.82-second 40-yard dash, had a 36.6-inch vertical jump, ran a 4.27-second shuttle and threw the power ball 46 feet.
He is the only prospect among the top 100 in the current SPARQ ratings who weighs more than 250 pounds. His short shuttle time of 4.27 seconds was better than the one recorded by the nation’s No. 2 running back Noah Cain in that event.
Alfano was told by the Alabama staff that he is the No. 1 defensive line target for the Tide in the 2019 class. It’s clear to see why. With defensive line being one of the team’s biggest needs, getting Alfano, who said he will not take any visits to other schools after his commitment, arguably would be the biggest get for the Tide yet.

Why wouldd Alabama offer top JUCO offensive tackle?
In case you missed it over the weekend, Alabama offered the nation’s No. 1 junior college OT, Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu.
Malaesala @SalaDaBeast
I am truly blessed to receive another full ride and adding Alabama to my official visit list for universities. @AlabamaFTBL

A lot of you messaged me asking why the Tide would offer him with the team already having three tackles committed in 5-star prospect Pierce Quick and 4-star prospects Amari Kight and Tanner Bowles. Alabama is also in good position to land 5-star tackle Darnell Wright and 5-star center Clay Webb.
I think this should be seen as an offer just to cover the team’s bases. There are really no repercussions to offering him, so why not?

5-star RB Trey Sanders talks Gators
Florida is one of several schools vying for the services of the nation’s No. 1 running back, Trey Sanders. The 5-star prospect from IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) claims no leaders, but his recruitment has been trending toward Florida since mid-March.

Trey's brother, Umstead Sanders, is a big reason why. The junior college linebacker (Hinds C.C./Raymond, Miss.) committed to Florida on March 18 and will join the football program this summer as a preferred walk-on.
Last month, Sanders told SEC Country his older brother was calling “every day” trying to get him to commit to Florida. Those efforts have not subsided.
“He likes to get the coaches to call me every day and try to get me to come to Florida, man,” Sanders said this weekend. “So it’s pretty hectic. But at the end of the day, he understands even though we’re family I’ve got to do what’s best for me.”
Sanders and his older brother first visited Florida together for the opening weekend of spring practices under first-year coach Dan Mullen.
The 6-foot, 216-pound back returned to Gainesville with his IMG Academy football team for the Gators’ second scrimmage, and then attended the Orange & Blue Game along with Umstead.
“I’ve been going up there with my brother a couple times,” Trey Sanders said. “He goes up there and he feels something different, and I feel something different. I loved the last staff, but this staff brings a whole new type of mentality. There’s just a lot more joy around the football program.”

Growing up together in Port Saint Joe, Fla., Sanders said he played with Umstead “on almost every team.” The chance to reunite with him again — even if just for one season — would be a dream come true for both. [<< Author's words, not Trey's.]
“We grew up talking about that all the time,” the 5-star RB said. “Since we were little kids we talked about playing with each other on the same team and being able to have the opportunity to play with him in college, that’s a great thing.”
There’s no denying their mother is hoping for that outcome. Being able to watch her sons at one school beats having two places to be on game days, and she already has the appropriate attire for The Swamp.
“She grew up a Florida fan,” Sanders reiterated, “and for just me and my brother to be at the same school so she don’t have to travel that much and she can wear her favorite team, it’s just like a dream for her."

Mullen and running backs coaching Greg Knox are working around the clock to make that dream a reality. Sanders said he talks to Knox just about every day and hears from Mullen twice a week.
“Me and Coach Mullen, we’re real cool,” Sanders said. “Just talking to him and building that relationship from the times I’ve been up there, it’s pretty good.
“He likes to run the ball. I want to run the ball in college. Offensive scheme doesn’t matter much. … I don’t care how you run it or how you want to run it, I’m there to run the ball for you.”
Sanders is ranked the nation’s No. 7 overall recruit in the 247Sports composite. He also took trips this spring to Florida State, Miami and Georgia, and his other offers include Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Ohio State and Oklahoma.
The former Crimson Tide commit said he plans to enroll early and will take official visits before making his decision. Despite his familiarity with Alabama, Florida and the other in-state programs, Sanders is not ruling anyone out. Ain’t no telling what other schools got in store for me,” he said.
Note: Sanders visited Miami with his parents and FSU in March and Georgia on April 21 for G-Day. He's from Port St Joe, FL, which is a little east of Panama City Beach, and only slightly farther from UA than from UF.

I'm actually ok with him going to Florida..Give Mullen a QB and RB and he will give Kirby fits... Don't get me wrong I would love to have him, but if he goes to Florida I could live with it in the long run. Bama will be just fine at RB

St. Louis (Mo.) Cardinal Ritter wide receiver Jameson Williams earned an invitation to the Under Armour All-America Game with his performance. In a group of really good receivers, he has another gear from most of the rest of the pack. He eats up cushion quickly and quick feet in addition to that pure speed. He caught the ball consistently also. He is still adding strength, but he has tools and showed competitiveness as well.
Top Five Offensive Performers
5 - St. Louis (Mo.) Trinity Catholic wide receiver Marcus Washington, a four-star prospect, showed off his ball skills, making some juggling catches and others in traffic.

Saw the talk '19 MS LB Derick Hall might be landing a Bama offer.
His highlights are pretty good, he's rangy and runs well. He's 6-5, but his wingspan is of a 6-8 player. He already plays in a 34 defense, and Pruitt is all over him about growing into a rush OLB.

I don't know how Lewis isn't a top 15 pick on those mock drafts right now at the minimum. 6-5 250 with great athleticism and good against the pass and run. Will be a monster this season
