Alabama 1 of 2 schools who are locks to be finalists for one of South’s top DBs

Jalyn Phillips is one of the South's top DBs.
quote:

Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Roll Tide-ings, a rundown of everything happening in Alabama Crimson Tide recruiting with Chris Kirschner. Today, we talk the latest with one of the top defensive backs in the country.

Alabama guaranteed to be a finalist for Jalyn Phillips

Alabama lost a commitment from 4-star safety Brendan Gant on Sunday. That was to be expected. Gant was no longer a priority to the staff after former defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley left for the Oakland Raiders and former defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt left for the Tennessee head job.

The Tide have a commitment from 4-star defensive back Brandon Turnage, who could play safety or corner. But like Gant, don’t be surprised to see him reopen his recruitment at some point.

One player who could potentially fill Gant’s spot in the class is 3-star safety from Archer High School (Lawrenceville, Ga.). Jalyn Phillips. Phillips estimated that he has been to Tuscaloosa around five times and plans on getting back there several times in the coming months.

When he commits on Aug. 20, he knows two schools which will be among the finalists.

“Oklahoma and Alabama are locked in right now,” Phillips told SEC Country. “I have a really good relationship with the coaches at both of those schools. They’re always real with me. I just took an official visit to Oklahoma. Everything felt good there. It felt like home.

With ‘Bama, I’ve been there so many times. I’m building a relationship with the new DBs coach [Karl Scott]. They always keep in contact with me. Coach [Tosh] Lupoi is always hitting me up. We get on FaceTime and talk about football and other things like school and life.”

Phillips said he feels his connection with the Alabama staff is one of the strongest he has of the schools recruiting him. He said he talks to Lupoi almost daily and has met individually with Nick Saban “a bunch.”

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound prospect, who has been clocked at 4.59 seconds in the 40-yard dash, said Lupoi told him that he has the versatility to play all over the secondary, which increases his value. Alabama would like to add around four defensive backs this cycle.

“I know ‘Bama needs some DBs this class,” Phillips said. They’ve lost a lot of DBs to the draft that’s coming up. Some of the guys have told me that I have a chance to come in there and have a chance to compete to play early. I like competing and I know I can go there and compete for a winning team and try to keep the tradition they have going on there.”

Phillips was expected in Tuscaloosa last weekend for A-Day, but he chose to visit Georgia instead. The Bulldogs recently offered Phillips, and he named them, Alabama, Oklahoma and Florida State as the teams that are coming after him the hardest.

If he did choose Alabama, he knows why he would.

“They’re about their business there,” Phillips said. “They have a good business school, and that’s what I would like to major in. School and football is very important there. They don’t play any games when it comes to that.

“I feel at home there and it’s also close to my actual home. I have a good relationship with the coaches and I know I can compete to play early there. They like to win, and I like to win.

This is OT and pretty random...but I'm tired of looking at that big SEC patch on the jerseys. I wish we could put it above the numbers where the script A patch is.

Anyway, carry on fellas.

Howard Cross’ son committed to Notre Dame. The elder Cross played TE at Alabama in the 80s.

Don’t think Alabama heavily pursued. He’s a 6-2 240 DE out of New Jersey. Good offer list.

Pickering trims list, knows three official visits

quote:

Nathan Pickering has eliminated five more schools from his list.

On March 3, the 6-foot-5, 277 pound defensive end out of Seminary (Miss.) released his top 15 schools. Fast forward seven weeks and he is now down to 10 schools.

Notre Dame, Oregon, Stanford and Tennessee have dropped off that list.

Who remains in contention, who will receive official visits and what's next for the Rivals 250 prospect?

IN HIS OWN WORDS: "I was back at LSU over the weekend and before that I visited Florida," said Pickering. "I have also visited Auburn and Mississippi State this year. I have got my list down to 10 schools.

"Alabama, USC, Florida, Auburn, LSU, Georgia, Clemson, Mississippi State and Ole Miss are now my top schools."

ALABAMA: "Alabama is just a great program. It is surrounded by people who want to be the best and do what it takes to be on top."

AUBURN: "What stood out to me when I was there is how they push their academics. It is not all about football there. The coaches really want their guys to get the degree."

CLEMSON: "The Clemson coaches have been here, they are showing me a lot of love and I really like coach [Todd] Bates. Coach Bates is a great coach, he is a cool guy and he knows how to get guys to the NFL."

FLORIDA: "I love Dan Mullen. My mom loves him too. You can really say it was all about him, but when I visited down there, it was amazing. I loved it and with him there, Florida is definitely a school I am considering."

GEORGIA: "Coach [Tray] Scott and I have been talking and he knows what he is talking about. I like him and his style. He has coached some top defensive linemen too."

LSU: "I get lots of love from LSU. I love how their coaches are real with me. They don't tell me just what I want to hear, but they are honest with me. They way they have kept it real with me means a lot."

MISSISSIPPI STATE: "It is like home for me there because I have been there so me. Mark McLaurin is like a brother to me and I will be up there for a couple of weeks staying with him this summer. I love the enthusiasm the new staff has and it feels like family there."

OLE MISS: "I have gotten close to coach [Freddie] Roach and I like how he coaches. He lets his defensive linemen play loose and free."

TEXAS: "Texas made it because I love the way the coaches coach all of their players and how they develop their guys.”

USC: "At first, it was all about the Hollywood and LA thing, but the more I talked to them, the more I liked them. I have been talking to coach K.U. (Kenechie Udeze) and we have talked about football and life. I really want to see what it is like out there."

OFFICIAL VISITS: "I am working to schedule an official visit to USC for June, then I am probably going to take the others during or after the season. I know LSU and Alabama will get official visits too, but I do not know the last two yet. I am still working on that."

NEXT: "I do not plan to cut my list again until after the season. I will go into my senior season with a top 10, then after the season is when I will cut my list down to my final five."

RIVALS REACTION: Pickering was back at LSU Saturday and he now has visited Baton Rouge four times. Some feel the Tigers are the team to beat. Mississippi State's new staff has taken over right where the old one left off making Pickering feel like he is a top priority. He knows a lot of players in Starkville. He plans to visit Clemson and Georgia for the first times in May, so they will have their shot to impress. Pickering plans to take his time and enjoy the recruiting. He said he is having "fun" right now and all of this is a "blessing" to him.

Alabama DB signee Jalyn Armour-Davis ready to produce (al.com)

quote:

Alabama DB signee Jalyn Armour-Davis has 'everything going for him'

Jalyn Armour-Davis is literally counting down the days until he reports to Tuscaloosa.

The Class 5A All-State defensive back for St. Paul's, who signed with Alabama in December, told AL.com last week that he is "extremely excited" to officially become a member of the Crimson Tide.

He reports to Tuscaloosa on May 27.

"I'm ready to go," Armour-Davis said. "I went up there for spring break to try and get a feel for what it will be like, to try to learn some things since I'm not an early enrollee. It was the first time I met with (new defensive backs) coach (Karl) Scott in person. I was just trying to get comfortable with the guys and get comfortable being part of the team. It was a productive week."

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Armour-Davis helped St. Paul's to three Class 5A titles in four years during his high school career. As a senior, he played key roles in every phase for head coach Steve Mask's team.

On offense, he caught 24 passes for 364 yards and three TDs. He completed his only pass for 66 yards and a touchdown and ran four times for 28 yards.

Defensively, he finished with 21 tackles and eight pass break-ups as opponents constantly went away from his side of the field. Mask said he has all the tools necessary to be a quality defensive back in Nick Saban's system.

"He can run really fast and he's got good size," Mask told AL.com recently. "He's got everything going for him. He's a great cover corner, and they are hard to find. I think he will do very well."

AL.com caught up with Armour-Davis last week to talk to him about his high school career, the recruiting process and his expectations at the Capstone.

St. Paul's does not allow seniors to graduate early. Since some of your other future teammates did enroll early at Alabama, do you feel like you will be behind?

"I don't think so, especially after going up there for spring break. I think I'll be just fine."

As you look to your college career, what are your goals?

"I think just to be successful overall - to be the best version of me I can be - and I think everything else will take care of itself."

When did you know Alabama was the place for you?

"I don't think there was really a certain moment. I just kind of woke up one day and knew it was the school for me and never really looked back."

How much pressure was there to stay in-state?

"There wasn't necessarily pressure. I didn't really judge any schools based on proximity. I think Florida State, which was one of my finalists, is really about the same distance from Mobile that Tuscaloosa is. So that was never really a factor. FSU was in consideration, but it just didn't roll that way."

What do you think would have happened if you would have committed to Florida State and then-head coach Jimbo Fisher only to see him leave to take the Texas A&M job?

"I most likely would have de-committed. I had a great relationship with coach (Charles) Kelly and coach (Dameyune) Craig and with all of those guys gone, it would have been tough to stay with that. I'm glad I didn't go that route."

Do you have any regrets about the recruiting process?

"No regrets at all. I was blessed to be in the situation I was in. It was a place I didn't think I would be in coming into high school. Basketball was my favorite sport at that time. I received my first football offer as a freshman, and it was obvious that was the sport I needed to commit to play. No regrets. I've had a great four years at St. Paul's. Now it's time to move on to something else."

quote:

Do you have any set expectations for your freshman yet at Alabama?

"Not really. I don't have any set goals like statistics or playing time. I'm confident that when I do what I do good things will happen. I just have to stay within myself, do well in school and work hard and be a part of the process. The rest will take care of itself."

Former St. Paul's offensive lineman Josh Casher is a senior now at Alabama? Will it be nice to have a familiar face there?

"Definitely. I talk to him pretty much every time I'm on campus. I'm glad we will have one year up there together. His senior year here at St. Paul's was my eighth-grade year so we really weren't on the same football team, but we were on the track team together."

Who was the most memorable coach you met on the recruiting trail?

"There were a couple of them. (Georgia) coach (Kirby) Smart made a very good impression. I got very close with coach T Will (Travis Williams, Auburn). That is one of those relationships that, even though I didn't pick Auburn, I'm just glad I met him. He's a good person to know. I also was tight with coach Kelly, of course (Tennessee) coach (Jeremy) Pruitt and (now Oakland Raiders' DB) coach (Derrick Ansley)."

Is it intimidating or exciting to think about the reputation for producing great defensive backs that Alabama, and Nick Saban particularly, have developed?

"It's exciting. There is certainly a great opportunity there, but it's up to me to take advantage of it. Hopefully, in 3-4 years, I can follow in the footsteps of some of the great players they've had and move on to the next level."

With Daphne 2019 cornerback Christian Williams committing to Alabama last week, how cool would it be with two Gulf Coast guys maybe starting at corner in a few years?

"That would be cool, but we'll both have some work to do because I know they've already got some great defensive backs in my class."

Did anything you found out about or from coach Saban surprise you?

"I wouldn't say anything really surprised me because I've had an opportunity to be around him since the eighth grade. A lot of people think of him as being so serious -- and he is when it is about business and work. But he also likes to make jokes and have a good time when the time is right."
