Top 2019 OLB Mohamoud Diabate touring ACC, SEC powers this week

quote:

Auburn High 2019 outside linebacker Mohamoud Diabate is using his spring break to tour some of the top college football programs in the Southeast.

The No. 9 overall rising senior prospect in Alabama, according to the 247 composite rankings, already has visited LSU and Florida State this week. He is in Gainesville, Fla., at the University of Florida today and will be at Virginia on Friday.

The four-star prospect has offers from all those schools and many others, including reigning national champion Alabama.

"I'm just trying to evaluate everyone," Diabate told AL.com. "I'm not just going to places and talking to coaches. I'm doing my own research to find out everything I can about different teams and schools and coaches. If I'm going to be there for four years, I want to know who you are as a coach, what you are about, what are your morals. I think things through before I act. I don't want to make a decision, any decision, based on pure emotion."

Diabate said he plans to sign during the early period in December, but he's not in a hurry to make a decision at this point and doesn't have a favorite.

As a junior, the 6-foot-4, 220-pound Diabate had 82 tackles, including 20 for a loss, and 10 sacks for coach Adam Winegarden's team. He was a finalist for Class 7A Lineman of the Year. Winegarden has said Diabate could play a similar role to the one Rashaan Evans played at Alabama in the right system.

"He's a smart young man," Winegarden said. "He does a great job in school, loves the game, studies it, has all the intangibles. He was voted a team captain by our guys at the end of the season. Mohamoud (Ma-mood) is very well rounded. He has a high motor, great toughness and a competitive drive."

Diabate, currently the No. 14 outside linebacker in the nation, said he liked what he saw this week at both LSU and Florida State.

On LSU, he said: "I loved it. I was there for practice, and there was a lot of energy. Coach O (head coach Ed Orgeron) is always yelling and getting people excited. You can tell that staff wants to get the best out of you every practice. It's also big knowing the head man's specialty is basically my position. The thought of having a defensive guy as a head coach is nice because defense will be a definite focus there."

On FSU, Diabate said: "It was a nice family atmosphere. The coaches were all there and they basically told me that whoever comes in and works the hardest will play. They don't care if they are a freshman or a senior. So I think there is a good chance I could see early playing time if I decided to go there."

Diabate also spoke highly of first-year FSU coach Willie Taggart.

"He sat me down and talked to me honestly about the whole recruiting process," Diabate said. "He kind of talked to me about the tricks not to fall for and that type of thing. He didn't want to force FSU down my throat. He said he wanted me to take my time and make the best decision for me. But he did say he really wants me there, and that I could come visit as much as I wanted."

In addition to the four schools he is visiting this week and Alabama, Diabate also boasts offers from Georgia Tech, Louisville, Michigan, Mississippi State, Texas A&M, Ole Miss and South Carolina among others.

However, it is easy to tell he is not letting the recruiting attention inflate his ego.

"I haven't made it anywhere yet," he said. "I'm excited about the offers and the chance to play college football for sure, but I've got a lot more to prove, a lot to achieve. I realize that one bad decision, one torn ACL and all this could be gone. I'm never going to get the big head. I'm going to be the best person I can be on and off the field always."

I really like Mohamoud Diabate. He's intelligent, humble, good attitude and will put in the work to be great. I think he's got the mental and physical attributes needed to be great, and the versatility to play any LB position. I hope Bama makes him a priority.

DeMarcco Hellams Highlights

Steve Wiltfong did a CB forecast today for DeMarcco Hellams to Clemson. Also, Wiltfong and a ND mod CBd his teammate Nick Cross to ND today, but Cross' timeline doesn't show any visits to ND (only VT and tOSU). Wtf?

Alabama’s biggest 2019 recruiting class needs

Tide’s biggest needs in 2019 class

Inside linebacker

Alabama whiffed at inside linebacker in the 2018 class. The Crimson Tide wanted JJ Peterson, but once Jeremy Pruitt left for Tennessee, that was a done deal. The Tide also liked Vernon Jackson, but once it was clear he wasn’t going to sign with Alabama, the staff stopped recruiting him. The team also liked Brandon Kaho, but he surprisingly signed with Washington.

‘Bama did sign 3-star inside linebacker Jaylen Moody, who surely was a backup plan for the team. He got offered in the final days leading up to National Signing Day. He’ll likely redshirt this season.

Getting inside linebackers in 2019 is of the utmost importance. Dylan Moses and Mack Wilson are likely the starters heading into this season. Moses showed that he’s bound for stardom while Wilson has shown that he’s likely the next Tide linebacker who’s going to get selected early in the NFL draft. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him leave after this season. Outside of Moses and Wilson, however, there are lots of unknowns. Ben Davis hasn’t developed the way we thought he would coming out of high school and Markail Benton hasn’t played yet.

Here are the Tide’s top 2019 targets at inside linebacker.

Quarterback

Alabama didn’t have the luxury of having a couple of elite quarterback prospects within its state borders in the 2018 class, but that changes in the 2019 class.

The Crimson Tide didn’t sign a high school quarterback in the last recruiting cycle, but they did add East Carolina grad transfer quarterback Gardner Minshew, who chose Alabama over Tennessee.

Here’s are the Tide’s top quarterback targets in the 2019 class.

Defensive tackle

The most interesting question to me surrounding the defensive tackle group heading into spring camp is whether Alabama will move Raekwon Davis inside to fill Da’Ron Payne’s loss. The team could also decide to play Davis on the opposite side of Isaiah Buggs and have Johnny Dwight, a fifth-year player, fill in for Payne.

There’s not a whole lot of depth at defensive tackle. We don’t know what Stephon Wynn and Christian Barmore will bring to the team, but both have a good chance of making an early impact. I would lean toward Wynn seeing the field sooner than Barmore because he’s already on campus and Barmore is just very raw as a player.

Here are the Tide’s top 2019 targets at defensive tackles.

Offensive linemen

The plan, as always, when it comes to Alabama’s offensive line is to start the best five players. Specific questions entering this season: Who will take over at center for Bradley Bozeman? Will Jonah Williams slide from left tackle to center? Before Lane Kiffin left, I was told that the plan was going to be to move Williams to center and Bozeman to guard, so there has been some talk of Williams making the transition already.

Alabama also has an influx of talented tackles. It’s going to be interesting to see if Alex Leatherwood can parlay his impressive National Championship Game performance into a starting spot. As interesting to watch will be the battle at right tackle that likely will feature Matt Womack and Jedrick Wills. Wills, like Leatherwood, raised some eyebrows as a freshman.

Looking at the 2019 class, this will be a bigger group than 2018. The Tide signed two offensive linemen in the last cycle in 4-star tackle Tommy Brown and 4-star center Emil Ekiyor. I expect Alabama to sign four or five linemen this year.

Here are the Tide’s top 2019 offensive line targets.

Maybe Chris Kirschner is on spring break.

10 from Alabama make first full Top247 for the class of 2020

quote:

247Sports came into the week with a trio of prospects from Alabama in the early class of 2020 rankings -- less than half of a traditional Top247 -- a number that has more than tripled with the full release on Wednesday.

Seven prospects from the Yellowhammer State make their debut in the rankings while the three who have long been involved -- Dazalin Worsham, Kristian Story and Jayson Jones -- remain among the top 150 prospects in the country at this time. The fresh list includes a new name at the top, a much talked about dual-threat quarterback and even a prospect without a known college football offer to his name.

The network takes a look at each of the Alabama standouts in the initial Top 247, in order of appearance.

I try not to go get too giddy over the instate talent for 2019, but I can't see how Alabama doesn't sign 10-12 from instate in this class.

No. 28 Jayson Jones, Calera (Ala.) High

-- The two-way linemen stands a towering 6-foot-5, 322 pounds and has ability on both sides of the ball, snagging first-team All-State honors as an offensive lineman, with a current projection leaning towards defense. Armed with early offers from Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee, among others, the new top prospect in the state moves much better than most at his size, with the power to split double teams on routine in the process.

No. 82 Dazalin Worsham, Trussville (Ala.) Hewitt-Trussville

-- A mainstay in this grouping since the first Top247 for the 2020 class, the top offensive threat in the state has just about all the tools of an elite wide receiver. Remaining in the top 100, the 6-foot-1, 180-pounder has the size and speed to make defensive coordinators sweat. As he fills out his frame and adds strength to go along with improved route-running, he could further cement his status as the top offensive prospect in the state. Alabama, Clemson and Florida State represent just some of his 20-plus offers.

No. 84 Malachi Moore, Trussville (Ala.) Hewitt-Trussville

-- Worsham's teammate gets the benefit of going against him daily but the long and physical cornerback was on our radar even before a breakout 2017. But during the year, he established himself as perhaps the top cornerback in the state regardless of class with his competitive nature at the line of scrimmage, ability to run in the open field and track the football well through the point of contact. The part-time wide receiver makes his debut in the Top247 and already has offers from more than a dozen programs, including Florida, Arkansas and Oregon.

No. 96 Kristian Story, Lanett (Ala.) High

-- Fresh off of leading the Panthers to a state championship as a quarterback, the versatile athlete remains a top 100 prospect on 247Sports. The network and the college football world alike know he's among the best, though the position projection for the 6-foot-2, 196-pounder remains up in the air. The case can be made for running back, wide receiver, linebacker or defensive back, something programs like Alabama and Georgia are willing to figure out at a later date.
