Two guys who can tend to fight the football, Justin Watkins and Xavier Williams, had good first days catching the ball. Each has the speed to gain separation and their hands were reliable for the most part all day.

The linebackers were very physical. In addition to Robertson’s big hit on Slade, I saw Lamb and Mitchell also make big hits on fills during run plays. Quay Walker is also very aggressive and if this holds up, the game itself should be a physical battle.

UA All-America Game: Five commitment predictions

quote:

Registration day at this year’s Under Armour All-America Game is off and running, as many of the top prospects in the 2018 class descend on the Orlando area for one of the country’s premier all-star events. Prospects both signed and unsigned will participate in the weeklong event, but it’s the uncommitted names that pack the intrigue. With that in mind, Rivals.com takes a stab and forecasting where five of the game’s uncommitted prospects’ may land.

Nicholas Petit-Frere

The Situation:
Florida has long been seen as the leader here, but the Gators’ coaching change opened the door for other suitors. Alabama and Michigan got involved with Petit-Frere to some extent, but the most logical landing spots seem like UF and Notre Dame. Never count out Nick Saban, who is making a late charge here. There’s plenty of time until Signing Day, so Alabama should not be ruled out in any way shape or form, but logic dictates that the Gators are the team to beat.

The Pick: Florida

Justyn Ross

The Situation:
Ross’ teammates at last month’s Alabama-Mississippi seemed to think Clemson was his most likely landing spot, but the two in state schools are very much in play. Top-flight Alabama prospects rarely escape the state, so Clemson has its work cut out for it when it comes to landing Ross. That said, the sheer amount of smoke around the Tigers is impossible to ignore at this juncture. It will be up to Auburn to sway the five-star wide receiver on his Jan. 26 official visit. For now, however, Clemson must be seen as the ever-so-slight leader.

The Pick: Clemson

Army Bowl: Five players who could make the jump to five-star status

quote:

Players arrive in San Antonio today for the start of six days of preparation for the annual U.S. Army All-American Bowl. With an impressive collection of talent, there will be plenty of current five-stars on display. But which players can join the five-star club with a strong showing this week? We take a look at five candidates and have Rivals.com National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell weigh in on what he’s hoping to see from each prospect.

JJ Peterson

The Situation:
Peterson has kept a relatively low profile despite being ranked in the Rivals100 for nearly the entire 2018 rankings cycle. One of the highest-ranked uncommitted players in the country, plenty of fan bases will have their eyes on Peterson this week.

Farrell’s take: “Peterson isn't the biggest linebacker, but he has good length, covers a lot of ground and is good in his drops. If he can showcase his coverage skills during the week and then hit everything that moves in the game, he has a shot”

UA All-America Game: Where five unsigned players might land

quote:

The first day of practice at the Under Armour All-America Game has come and gone, as prospects from all over the country spent the day competing against each other and learning the schemes they’ll be asked to run in Thursday’s game. And while most of the players involved in the event have already signed letters of intent, a few remain unsigned. Below, Rivals.com takes a stab at guessing the college destinations for five such players.

Jacob Copeland

THE SITUATION:
Copeland was committed to Florida and would have likely signed with the Gators if the coaching change hadn’t taken place. These days, however, things have become a bit more open. Copeland is considering Alabama and Tennessee in addition to Florida. Texas A&M could get involved, should a pending official visit to College Station go well. Never count out Nick Saban, but Florida has positioned itself to get Copeland’s last official visit and holds a slight edge based on that. The four-star wide receiver will announce his choice on signing day.

THE PICK: Florida

Justin Watkins

THE SITUATION:
No stranger to making verbal pledges, Watkins has been committed to LSU, Texas and Florida State and different times during his high school career. Now back on the market, the four-star athlete plans to announce his fourth decision at Thursday’s game. Watkins dodged media availability during Sunday’s registration day, as mystery grows around his pending choice. A number of schools have been involved with the unpredictable Watkins, but it seems as though a second commitment to LSU is likely.

THE PICK: LSU

4. Xavier Williams and Anthony Schwartz

Coming into this event, Williams and Schwartz were Florida receivers who were known more for their speed than their hands. On Sunday they proved that their hands could be trusted as both were reliable throughout the practice session. Williams was especially impressive, while Schwartz made a few very difficult receptions. Both have the potential to be big-time playmakers at the next level, so seeing their improvement was a very pleasant surprise.

UA All-America Game: Takeaways from Day One

quote:

ALABAMA QUARTET OFF TO GREAT START

Alabama had 18 commitments going into the Early Signing Period, and 14 of those have signed. Out of the six participating in the Under Armour All-America game this year, four really stood out on Day One.

Starting on the offensive side of the ball with wide receiver Xavier Williams: He showed good speed and his hands were strong Sunday. He made a couple of very nice touchdown grabs within a 5-minute span that drew big celebrations from his teammates. On defense, Stephon Wynn, Jordan Davis and Quay Walker showed up often. Wynn played strong at the point of attack and was not pushed back often. Davis was outstanding in the Team session applying constant quarterback pressure. He would have had at least three sacks if they were going live. Walker, the only one out of this group that did not sign earlier this month, was one of the fastest linebackers on either team. He closed on the ball extremely well and the Tide will have to work hard to hold off Auburn, Georgia and Tennessee for Walker.

Have heard that at least one assistant on our staff thinks Anoma is the #1 overall player in the country this year and the best pass rusher they've seen come out of HS since Clowney.

Again. The national recruiting guys literally NEVER pick us to get anyone that isn't an in-state guy in the last couple years unless the recruits just flat out say that they're a heavy lean to us.

It's the cool and trendy thing to do, apparently. It's rather bizrre, though. We'll get several of the ones they're picking to go elsewhere.

We have pass rushers on the roster they're just young. Looked good in mop up duty.
