Nick Saban has taken a much more methodical approach to recruiting for 2018, and it has the fans freaking out a bit, but if there is one coach I never doubt in recruiting (OK, two with Urban Meyer), it’s Saban. He knows the guys he covets, he is willing to be patient to land them (or flip them, as I see ‘Bama flipping a bunch of kids this year), and he’s not going to push the panic button and take a player he doesn’t want that badly.

Alabama has added Stephon Wynn and Tommy Brown, two players anyone in the country would love to have, in the last few weeks, and the Crimson Tide's class is third in the nation in average star ranking. Be patient. While you see a bunch of programs landing kids this early and apparently outpacing Alabama, watch how many Saban steals away before all is said and done, and keep an eye on how many upsets he pulls in recruiting this year.

I think Alabama fans will be pleasantly surprised at how his strategy unfolds this year compared to many of his earlier classes.

The Gators have a few of the biggest commits of the past week. Here are my top 10 in order since my last column for the class of 2018. There were enough great 2019 commitments I will mention them in Thursday’s column…

1. QB Matt Corral, Florida: A big-time QB commitment and a kid who could play early from across the country no less. It doesn’t get much bigger than this.

2. WR Ja’Marr Chase, Florida: A dynamic playmaker who can stretch the field and is excellent after the catch as well. A steal from Louisiana.

3. CB Jalen Green, Texas: Expected? Yes. Important? Yes. Green plays big, has a long frame and is an elite lockdown guy.

4. S Isheem Young, Penn State: A big, physical safety who will make you pay in the middle of the field or in the run game. Penn State added some thump.

5. LB Chad Bailey, Missouri: A huge pull from Texas for Mizzou and a much needed big name to kick-start this recruiting class.

6. OT Tommy Brown, Alabama: A legacy who has great size, can play right or left tackle and possibly at guard because he’s a very good run blocker.

7. WR Marquez Ezzard, Florida State: A thick and powerful receiver who can gain yards after the catch. FSU had a great week as well.

8. TE Kyle Pitts, Florida: Pitts isn’t a burner but he gets open, can box out defenders and should be a reliable red zone target.

9. ATH Jaquayln Crawford, Oklahoma: The Sooners keep adding athleticism to this class, and Crawford could be a dynamic receiver at the next level.

10. LB Michael Harris, Auburn: Harris is quick and athletic and is very physical covering a ton of ground on defense. He could play inside or outside depending on how he bulks up.

It's nearly the end of July, and a look at the Rivals.com Team Recruiting Rankings shows that Alabama continues to lag behind its usual pace on the recruiting trail. As of today, the Tide have just seven commits. Since the calendar turned to June they have picked up the pace, adding five commits including Rivals250 offensive lineman Tommy Brown over the weekend. But make no mistake, Alabama sitting at No. 47 in the nation with just five months until the first point prospects can official sign letters of intent (Dec. 22) and it's not just a surprise, it's a shock. As the summer moves along expect the Tide to keep adding pieces, but with several key staff changes following the conclusion of last season, it's worth noting that for now, Alabama isn't recruiting at its typical level, at least not yet.

Tanner McKee has one official visit scheduled, plenty of others coming and even a few last unofficial visits coming up this summer.

It's a busy time.

The four-star quarterback from Corona (Calif.) Centennial who will take a two-year Mormon mission after high school will be at UCLA on Wednesday and then head to Stanford on Friday.

Both Pac-12 schools are definitely under consideration.

As for official visits, McKee said he will take a return trip to Alabama for its SEC West showdown against LSU in early November.

Rated as the third-best pro-style quarterback in the class behind only Clemson commit Trevor Lawrence and Florida pledge Matt Corral, McKee was in Tuscaloosa in the spring and wants to see everything possible when he returns.

“I want to see everything I saw and was told on my unofficial visit come together on gameday,” McKee said.

“I had a great visit down there back in March. I've never been to an SEC game so I am excited to be part of gameday at ‘Bama.”

An official visit to Texas is almost assuredly happening as well but McKee has not set a date yet as he works through schedules with offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Tim Beck.

After his senior season, McKee is planning to take official trips to BYU and Washington.

Because the Corona Centennial standout is taking a mission after high school, there really are no boundaries on which school he can pick, even schools with quarterbacks committed since he won’t be back for two years.

Georgia CB shined at Alabama, picked up offer

THE LATEST: Warren Burrell ended the summer with a bang. The 2019 cornerback out of Suwanee (Ga.) North Gwinnett traveled over to Tuscaloosa (Ala.), camped at Alabama and he left with an offer from the Crimson Tide.

Alabama's defensive backs coach, Derrick Ansley was in touch with Burrell's coach, so the junior knew some type of interest was there. Once Burrell camped in front of Ansley, the offer was presented and the Crimson Tide has his attention.

IN HIS OWN WORDS: "I knew there was a chance I could get the offer, but I was still a little surprised," said Burrell. "After the camp ended, coach Ansley pulled me over to another field and that is when he offered me.

"He said that he really liked how I looked on film, but that I was even better in person. He liked how I performed at camp and that is why he offered me."

FIRST VISIT TO T-TOWN: "My first visit to Alabama was a special one. I did not get to spend a lot of time there to check it all out, but I got an offer and I got to see their football facilities. It was amazing as soon as I walked into the football facilities. Everything is top notch, it looked like all the facilities have been upgraded to the max and it was very impressive."

HIGH INTEREST IN UA: "I have known about Alabama my whole life. Many people in my family like Alabama, so I know a lot about them and I like them a lot too. I now have huge interest in playing for them. I like the coaches, their facilities are amazing and I will be back for a game this fall. It is Alabama, so my interest is high."

RIVALS REACTION:
It is still early for Burrell and he does not have any favorites yet, but Alabama made a strong impression. He wants to get back as soon as possible to see more of the campus and to learn more about the school, but he left impressed with what he saw. He knows about Alabama's history of producing defensive backs under Nick Sabam and Alabama is now one to watch. He also has offers from Mississippi State, NC State, South Carolina, Virginia and Wake Forest.

Coynis Miller apparently won't be announcing until the Fall now.

That's good news for us because I think he would have picked Auburn if he announced this week as planned.

Four-star offensive tackle Reuben Unije earned an offer from Alabama a little over a year ago, and on Tuesday night listed the Tide in his top seven.

Along with Alabama, Oregon, Ole Miss, UCLA, South Carolina, Oklahoma, and Florida made the cut.

Unije, a 6-foot-5, 303-pounder from IMG Academy, is rated the No. 17 offensive tackle and the No. 248 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.

Why Alabama fans still shouldn’t panic over team’s lack of commitments

Alabama sits 46th in the recruiting rankings, according to the 247Sports composite, with just 38 days to go until the Crimson Tide kick off their season against Florida State in Atlanta. There’s no doubt that filling out the 2018 class is moving at a snail’s pace. There’s also no need to be concerned about Alabama being behind teams such as BYU, Kansas and Purdue in the recruiting rankings. This class WILL be ranked inside the top 10 and likely the top 5 when National Signing Day rolls around in February. Now, I don’t think Alabama will end up with the top-rated class for the eighth year in a row, but that shouldn’t be considered a failure because I expect the Tide to hit on several key needs such as cornerback and interior defensive linemen.
