Other quick takeaways include...
Shorter should be a five-star. We are excited to talk about that as we update our rankings from this event. Babb remains in the discussion too. I continue to like the Buckeyes for Babb.
And speaking of liking Ohio State, Jeremy Ruckert is the most dynamic tight end in the country but Luke Ford isn't bad too. Ruckert plans to announce within the next couple weeks with Michigan looking to spoil OSU's plans. Ford is leaning towards Alabama but Georgia among others have him thinking.
Jackson Carman is the nation's No. 1 offensive tackle prospect and Jamaree Salyeris still that guy on the inside. Could they both beat teammates at Clemson? Absolutely but I still like the Buckeyes for Carman who is looking at USC as well. Clemson is my pick for Salyer but Georgia, Ohio State, Notre Dame and a couple others are in play. William Barnes was the most consistent offensive line performer over a two-day stretch. Florida and North Carolina may be his leaders but folks need to be talking about Florida State more here. The Seminoles are very much in it.
The defensive line didn't have a standout, but Clemson five-star commit Xavier Thomas certainly flashed rare ability in this camp with his unique first two steps and ridiculous power. Perhaps he's No. 1 over the two quarterbacks. Notre Dame defensive tackle commit Jayson Ademilola was the standout on the inside.
Isaac Taylor-Stuart ran a 4.32 40-yard dash in the semifinals en route to taking home fastest man at the event. He also made a lot of plays during 7-on-7. I continue to like USC's chances for the nation's No 3 cornerback.
Nebraska commit Brendan Radley-Hiles was the most exciting defensive player at the event forcing several turnovers and getting his hands on several other passes.
Quarterback Tanner McKee is worth the wait. The Corona (Calif.) Centennial standout will take a two-year LDS Mission before enrolling at the school of his choice, but the way 247Sports No. 3 ranked quarterback lived up to his lofty ranking during 7-on-7 play, at times making it look as easy as Fields did. BYU will get the last official from the 6-foot-6, 220-pound McKee the first weekend of February, but Alabama, Texas, Washington and UCLA are four others that will get visits during the fall. If Stanford offers they'll certainly be a contender as well.

BEAVERTON, Ore. — Brenton Cox is one of Alabama’s top overall targets in the Class of 2018, but the Crimson Tide will need to flip him from his commitment if they have any shot at him.
Cox, a 5-star defensive end from Stockbridge (Ga.) High School, committed to Ohio State over Alabama and Georgia in April. That hasn’t stopped Alabama from pursuing the nation’s No. 2 defensive end.
The 6-foot-5, 247-pound prospect said he talks to either defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley or outside linebackers coach Tosh Lupoi at least once every two days; however, his commitment to the Buckeyes is solid.
“I’m locked in. I’m going to take official visits, though,” Cox told SEC Country at The Opening Finals. “My official visits may be to LSU, Alabama and Georgia. Other than that, I’m not going anywhere else. I’m good.”
Those schools he mentioned are the schools that are still coming after Cox. He was expected to make a three-day trip to Tuscaloosa last month but ended up canceling it.
“The trip to Alabama wasn’t really for me,” Cox said. “I was going to ride up there with my coach. I guess someone took it the wrong way and it spread out the wrong way. I still would have went, but something else popped up.”
Cox said he didn’t ask for Ohio State’s permission to visit other schools. He’s also never talked to the coaching staff about visits elsewhere. He has heard from another Buckeyes commit that the coaching staff would prefer if they don’t visit other schools.
“I heard from Emory (Jones) that they don’t like that,” Cox said. “I’m good, though. I’m locked in with them anyways.”
Alabama is going to need to get him on campus once again to have a shot at flipping Cox. The good news for the Tide is he has a very good relationship with the Alabama staff.
“I’ve been knowing Ansley since he was at Kentucky,” Cox said. “It’s kind of like an I’ve been knowing you type of thing. Coach Lupoi is a good coach, too.”

Justin Fields dazzed throughout the 7-on-7 finals at Nike Football's The Opening.
For his efforts, he was rewarded as the top player from the event. Fields was named the Elite 11 MVP and The Opening overall MVP at the Beaverton, Ore., setting.
Fields led his team to a championship in the 7-on-7 event, as Mach Speed beat Vapor Speed 31-15 behind five touchdown passes from Fields.
The nation's No. 3 overall recruit, the five-star quarterback from Kennesaw, Ga., recently visited Alabama and Auburn. He also said he plans to return to Auburn on July 13. He's in contact with Alabama assistant Brent Key, but has not set a return trip.

BEAVERTON, Ore. — The week of competition at The Opening Finals is complete. The event featured 12 of the nation’s top quarterbacks who advanced from the Elite 11 Finals to go head-to-head at Nike World Headquarters looking to prove they were the best.
There were several quarterbacks with elite arms, but only a few separated from the pack to prove they are the best of the best. The quarterback’s performances during 7on7 play carried the most weight as 247Sports ranks them in order.

12. Jack Tuttle
Utah commit Jack Tuttle really struggled during 7on7 play. The 6-foot-4, 195-pounder threw seven interceptions, the most of any quarterback. Tuttle’s team did not win a single game throughout the tournament and his was only able to toss three touchdown passes.

8. Matt Corral
Long Beach (Calif.) Poly five-star Matt Corral struggled with accuracy issues through out the week and only completed 57-percent of his passes during 7on7 play, the lowest of all quarterbacks at the camp. Corral certainly has a cannon of an arm that can drive the ball down the field though. In total, he tossed seven touchdowns to only three interceptions.

3. Tanner McKee
Corona (Calif.) Centennial five-star quarterback Tanner McKee is another that only competed during one day of 7on7 play, but the 6-foot-6, 220-pounder made the most of it. McKee caught fire tossing 10 touchdowns and no interceptions while completing 70-percent of his throws. McKee showed he had a good feel for the offense going through his progressions and hitting the open man consistently.

1. Justin Fields
Kennesaw (Ga.) Harrison five-star Justin Fields left no doubt on who was the top overall signal caller during the weekend of competition. During 7on7 play, the 6-foot-3, 220-pound prospect tossed 16 touchdowns, zero interceptions while completing 72-percent of his passes and leading his squad to championship. Fields flashed a big arm to make the vertical throws, but he remained in complete control of the offense hitting intermediate and underneath throws when that is what the defense gave him. It was an all around stellar performance by Fields.

BEAVERTON, Ore. — The Opening Finals are a wrap. After three days of position drills, 1on1 competition and a 7on7 tournament that culminated in a Championship for Team Mach Speed at the Nike World Headquarters, it's time to close the book on the premier all-star event of the summer. This year, we're breaking down our prospect reports by region instead of 7on7 team. Here's who caught out eye this week from Florida.

Next 5 Standouts
DB Brendan Radley-Hiles – No Florida-based prospect made more plays this week than Radley-Hiles. The Nebraska verbal commit, who started his prep career in California, was essentially the quarterback of Team Untouchables' defense as he directed traffic and called out coverages while roaming freely at safety. The Bradenton IMG Academy playmaker finished the 7on7 tournament with seven pass break ups and three interceptions to his credit.
CB Patrick Surtain Jr. – Surtian Jr. could start in some college secondaries right now. The Fort Lauderdale American Heritage cornerback was one of the most physically impressive prospects out in Oregon and also one of the most polished. He was rarely tested by opposing quarterbacks and when he was, he made plays. The highlight of the weekend for him came on Saturday when he went up and intercepted a deep ball from Kentucky commit Jarren Williams.
DT Nesta Silvera – There wasn’t a more powerful defensive tackle on hand than Silvera. The Fort Lauderdale American Heritage standout used a quick first step to gain penetration right at the point of attack and then a low pad level to leverage his way past guys like Top247 center Justin Dedich and three-star guard Jovaughn Gwyn. He made a case to earn a bump in the 247Sports' rankings.
OL William Barnes – Barnes didn't make the event's 'Final Five' which came as a bit of a surprise seeing as how he was one of the most impressive linemen in 1-on-1s on both Sunday and Monday. The U.S. Army All-American showed plenty of versatility working at both guard and tackle and was able to use his quick feet and long reach to push a number of much quicker defensive ends to the side. Florida remains the favorite in the recruitment, but North Carolina is pushing.
CB Asante Samuel Jr – Samuel Jr. was one of the more physical defensive backs. The Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas standout broke up a pair of passes on Sunday and another on Monday when he jumped a slant route and bumped a wide receiver. The Florida State commit has been billed in the past as someone that could make an impact in the nickel, but he also showed that he can get it done on the outside when asked.

Emptying the Notebook
– Miami Columbus Top100 defensive back Josh Jobe had an interception on Sunday. He was one of the better looking safeties in coverage and was able to get his paws on a number of balls during tournament play. That was also the case with Orlando Jones three-star cornerback Sevyn Banks, who totaled two interceptions. The Ohio State commit returned one of them for a touchdown.
– Speaking of Buckeyes pledges, defensive tackle Taron Vincent was one of the best in 1-on-1s. The IMG Academy was able to motor past a variety of different offensive linemen with his brute strength. He continues to look like the nation's top interior defensive lineman.
– Clearwater Calvary Christian Top247 safety Amari Burney got better and better as he logged more and more 7v7 games under his belt. The Florida safety commit had two pass break ups and an interception on Monday.
– IMG Academy 2019 defensive end Nolan Smith looked elite on Sunday. That wasn't necessarily the case on Monday as the Georgia verbal commit didn't win as much reps in 1-on-1s. He still cemented himself as one of the state's best prospects for the next recruiting cycle.
– Miami Southridge three-star offensive guard Delone Scaife had his moments in 1-on-1s. He's a prospect that put himself in contention to add another star next to his name at some point down the line.
– North Broward Prep's Kevin Austin was one of the more productive wideouts. He caught 18 passes during the tournament three of which went for touchdowns.

KN had update on Justyn Ross this weekend. He says that AU & Clemson are recruiting him the hardest. KN apparently thinks that Clemson might be the team to beat right now with AU a close 2nd. But also emphasized that you can never count out Alabama
I think fact Ross played with Trevor Lawrence this weekend probably has something to do with the Clemson love though he did enjoy that visit. Honestly though both him and Lawrence underwhelmed some this weekend

Yeah, there weren't a ton of positives about them overall. I don't think TL will stay #1 after this.

I'd be more than just a little surprised based on everything I've heard if Ross isn't in Bama's class.

Whereas we generally have a numbers logjam at several positions as we get close to Signing Day, this year it looks like the position is pass rushing DE/OLB. With Jordan Davis committed publicly, Anoma privately, Latu, Henry, Parsons, and Ojulari out there(among others), it will be very interesting to see what we do there.

I tried my hand at a class of 22 and the hardest part was fitting the Jack/DE/OLB in this class. There's a serious log jam there.
Davis is the only one that strikes me as a guy that has the frame to grow into more of a combo DL like Allen did. Henry too, but I just don't see him in Alabama's 2018 class.
