Luke Ford is taking a hard look at all schools recruiting him, but Alabama is currently in the driver's seat for one of the nation's best tight ends.
The 6-foot-7, 248-pound Ford, a four-star recruit from Carterville, Ill., recently decommitted from Arkansas. He's the No. 4 tight end in the 247Sports composite, No. 4 overall tight end and No. 1 prospect in Illinois.
Ford cemented his offer from Alabama two weeks ago at a camp.
"They said I didn't do good, they said I did really good," Ford said at The Opening Finals in Beaverton, Ore. "They thought I did well and said I'm their No. 1 guy in recruiting for tight ends. It made me feel good. They're Alabama."
Alabama is after junior college standout tight end Dominick Wood-Anderson, who decides next month, but would likely take two if Ford also wants Alabama.
But he knows that Alabama has four tight ends on scholarship.
"Depth chart is a big factor," Ford said. "I'm going to have to look into that stuff. I want playing time. I'm not sure I want to wait until my junior or senior year to play."
But what's more important to Ford is how teams use their tight ends. Ford had great visits to Alabama and Auburn. He's also been to Georgia and LSU and wants to visit Texas. Arkansas remains in the mix.
He likely won't commit until National Signing Day or at the Under Armour All-America game in early January.
"I want to make a well-informed decision," Ford said. "Everybody's in the race, so I want to visit more schools."
First, Ford said Alabama was "probably No. 1 or No. 2" and the other school there would be Auburn. He then said, when informed that many crystal ball picks were in Alabama's favor, that those picks were on the right track.
"Alabama would probably be first," Ford said. "Everyone else is kind of around there. I really don't have an order."
Ford got the royal treatment on visits to Alabama and Auburn last month.
"First off, the facilities (at Alabama) were amazing," Ford said. "The campus was amazing. Nick Saban was awesome. You see a lot of things in the media where Nick Saban never smiles or never laughs. When I was in there, he was laughing and joking around."
Auburn also impressed Ford.
"The head coach, Coach (Gus) Malzahn, he literally took us on a tour by himself," Ford said. "He took us around the stadium and around the facilities. For a head coach to spend that much time on me, it made me feel great."
But Auburn tight ends had just two receptions last season, and Ford needs to see more.
"The thing about Auburn is that they say they're going to use tight ends, but they had almost zero production from tight ends," Ford said.
"What's going to come down to Auburn, they can be in my top five right now but after the season, if they're not using tight ends, they can drop out real quick."
And that's why Ford is taking his time. He also wants to see how Alabama uses tight ends after the departure of first-round NFL Draft pick O.J. Howard.
"I want to see how everything plays out," Ford said. "The proof is in the pudding. Coaches can say they use their tight ends, but until I see it on game film, it doesn't matter."

Cornerback is a position of need for Alabama in this class, and one of south Florida's best hears from the Crimson Tide daily.
Tyson Campbell fits the new wave of tall cornerbacks to a T. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., standout is 6-foot-2, weighing in at 182 pounds. Campbell is a four-star recruit, ranked No. 27 nationally and as the country's No. 3-ranked cornerback.
He visited Alabama two summers ago with American Heritage teammates Nick Eubanks and Brian Burns, who were being recruited by Alabama. At that time, Campbell was just starting to get noticed.
He plans on returning to Alabama in July. Campbell speaks with head coach Nick Saban and secondary coach Derrick Ansley on a regular basis.
"He's basically telling me that they don't have a lot of DBs and I can be that type of player who can come in and leave in three years," Campbell said. "That's a good plan and I like talking to Coach Saban."
Campbell doesn't have any leaders. Miami and Ohio State have momentum in the 247Sports crystal ball. In fact, throughout the entire group interview, Miami commit Al Blades, Jr., was by Campbell's side holding up a "U" and joking that Campbell was a silent Miami commit.
But he doesn't feel the heat to stay in south Florida. Alabama regularly has success with south Florida recruits, including Amari Cooper and Jerry Jeudy.
"It's not pressure," Campbell said. "I don't let it get to me. I just pray to God and let the process handle itself.
"Right now, just taking it day by day. The recruiting process is a fun process but at the same time, it's a tough one. You're making a decision that can dictate your future and how your life can change in the next three to four years. I'm taking my time to make the right decision."
Alabama didn't sign any cornerbacks in last year's class, and Campbell is more of a pure cornerback than recent commit Jalyn Armour-Davis of Mobile.
"That can influence my decision, early playing time," Campbell said. "Come in early, learn the system and get on the field."
Campbell has no timetable for a decision.

Huge need here. The staff really wants this kid and so do I. I know OSU is on a roll but don't count us out.

Josh Jobe doesn't know what he's talking about. We have a know-it-all here that says he is locked at Miami, so that's who I believe

Kind of similar to Sewell before he made his first visit, I've been hearing that Tosh feels very good about where we are with Parsons behind the scenes. We definitely have a lot of momentum with him right now.
