According to SEC Country Christian Tutt will have to camp to earn a commitable offer. Not expected to pick tide when he announces May 30th unless something changes

Well now.

It appears we have our first "Mod Battle" for the Class of 2018 because John Garcia said a week or so ago that he had a commitable offer.

Interdasting.

Jalyn Armour-Davis is putting recruiting on hold for the moment.

The St. Paul’s junior is concentrating on the Class 5A state track meet in Gulf Shores this weekend, then will turn his attention to spring football for two weeks beginning Monday.

“I’ll be ready for spring on Monday and probably won’t start thinking about recruiting again until after that,” Armour-Davis said.

The 6-foot, 170-pound cornerback participated in a pair of events in Gulf Shores on Thursday. He finished fourth in the long jump at 21-00. Later in the day, he won his heat in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.60.

He qualified second overall behind Hunter Appling of West Point (11.49). Other qualifiers included South Alabama commit Roger McCreary of Williamson (11.65) and Jacksonville State signee Charles Crawford of Vigor (11.74).

“It didn’t feel great,” Armour-Davis said of his 100-meter dash run Thursday afternoon, “but I’ll be able to redeem myself on Saturday. The win and the (rain) delay was an issue. It’s not an excuse, but it was a factor.”

In addition to his 100 final, Armour-Davis also is scheduled to compete in the triple jump on Saturday. In football, the four-star standout, who plays offense and defense for the Saints, is rated as the fourth-best rising senior prospect in the state, according to 247’s composite rankings.

The first-team Class 5A All-State and All-Coastal Alabama selection finished his junior season with 31 tackles and three interceptions on defense. He also had three TD receptions and one rushing score on offense.

Earlier this spring, he seemingly narrowed his college choices to six – USC, Auburn, Georgia, Florida State, Florida and LSU. However, he visited Alabama two days before A-Day, and the Crimson Tide could be in the mix now as well.

“My mom and I went, and we enjoyed it,” he said of Tuscaloosa. “We got to see the whole school. We met all the coaches and a few players. I just got to see what it was like being a Crimson Tide player on a normal day. My mom enjoyed it for sure. It’s definitely a school to consider.”

Armour-Davis also said Auburn and Florida State are both “still up there.”

“I’m just trying to take it slow right now, but those are definitely two schools that will be right there when I decide something,” he said.

Armour-Davis said he plans on making his decision this summer.

Alabama football signee Henry Ruggs is just trying to finish his high school athletic career strong this weekend at the Class 4A-7A state track meet in Gulf Shores.

So far, so good after Day 1.

The Robert E. Lee standout recorded the top time in the Class 7A 100-meter heats on Thursday, running it in 10.77 on a windy day marred by several rain delays.

“It wasn’t great,” Ruggs said. “I got kind of a slow start, but I’ll take it.”

He said the wind and the delays made the day difficult. The start of the meet was pushed back until noon due to heavy overnight rain in the area. It was then delayed for another hour by a storm right as the 100-meter heats started.

“Both were a factor,” he said. “Obviously, the wind holds you back. But the break also is tough because you want to get something to eat before you run, but you really can’t. Still, you don’t want to starve yourself. It’s kind of just part of it.”

The 100-meter final is scheduled for 10:10 a.m. on Saturday. Other qualifiers Thursday included Karon Delince of Central-Phenix City (11.08) and Auburn football signee Noah Igbinoghene of Hewitt-Trussville (11.16). Ruggs also will be part of Lee’s 4X100 relay team on Saturday.

A 6-foot, 175-pound wide receiver for the Generals, Ruggs caught 38 passes for 664 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior. He also played some quarterback and earned Class 7A Back of the Year honors. He will have little time to rest following his high school graduation.

He reports to Alabama on May 31.

“I’m excited to start,” he said. “I’m ready to get in school, get used to everything and get to know everyone on campus. I can’t wait to get there.”

Ruggs should be another piece to an already talented Alabama wide receiver group, but he said his first-year goals are realistic.

“I just get into the flow of the things, adapt to school and do the best I can to get into the rotation,” he said. “We’ll see what happens from there.”

Ruggs was the second-ranked 2017 prospect in the state, according to the 247 composite rankings behind only five-star defensive end LaBryan Ray, also an Alabama signee.

Alabama nearly produced as many NFL draft picks this year as an entire Power 5 conference, and Barry Switzer has a simple theory about how that happened.

The Crimson Tide had one of the best draft classes ever in 2017 with 10 players selected overall. The Big 12, meanwhile, had 14 total selections between its 10 teams. On Sports Talk with Bo Mattingly this week, Switzer said he thinks it goes back to recruiting.

“They recruited them,” Switzer said of Alabama’s draftees. “They were talent that you recruited. (Big 12 programs) don’t get the talent that Alabama gets.”

Alabama has landed seven straight No. 1 recruiting classes. Meanwhile, Texas and Oklahoma, the Big 12’s two traditional powerhouses, haven’t approached the same level of recruiting success.

The Longhorns have had just two top-10 recruiting classes since 2013. The Sooners have had one in that same time frame.

While there are plenty of lower-rated recruits who have gone on to be NFL draft picks, blue-chip prospects are more likely to eventually be selected in the draft. And Nick Saban’s program gets more blue-chippers than anyone.

“Not saying that Alabama coaches aren’t good,” Switzer said. “Damn right, they’re good. But they get to coach good players. … You just don’t recruit the good players at schools in this Big 12 conference. The only schools that really do are Texas, and Texas is down, and Oklahoma. And they’ve been down a little bit.”

Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Roll Tide-ings, a rundown of everything happening in Alabama Crimson Tide recruiting with Chris Kirschner. Today, we discuss the latest with Michigan offensive line commit Emil Ekiyor.

Alabama in good position for Emil Ekiyor

Alabama is strongly recruiting Michigan offensive guard commit Emil Ekiyor. Almost seven days a week he hears from either offensive line coach Brent Key or his primary recruiter, defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley.

Emil Ekiyor said he talks to an Alabama staff member almost every single day. That communication has put the Crimson Tide in good position for a flip down the road.

Ekiyor says he only hears from the Michigan staff only once or twice a week. He says he has no issue with Alabama recruiting him harder. He has a solid relationship with the Wolverines coaches and he feels like the Tide coaches have to reach out more because he was offered by Nick Saban in late February while in Tuscaloosa.

“I think with Alabama coming a bit later than Michigan, it’s important that they’re talking to me more because I just got the offer,” Ekiyor told SEC Country.

In a little over two months since the offer, Alabama has made up significant ground with the Wolverines commit. Ekiyor said Alabama is “probably” his No. 2 school and Florida State is third on his list.

The 6-foot-3, 330-pound prospect will return to Tuscaloosa on June 4 for one of Saban’s summer camps. He’ll make the trip from Indianapolis, where he lives, and stay overnight for the camp.

“It’s hard to not have interest in a school like that when they talk to you just about every day and you get to be on the phone with Coach Saban,” Ekiyor said. “I’m still committed to Michigan, but I have to take a look at Alabama.”

The Tide would like to sign around three offensive linemen in the Class of 2018, and Ekiyor is one of just a handful of guards the team is strongly recruiting. Offensive tackle is a bigger priority for Alabama this year, but Ekiyor is one of the team’s top overall targets on the offensive line.

“They really want to add to their depth on the offensive line,” Ekiyor said. “They are telling me that I could be a big part of what they’re trying to do. It could be a good situation if I go there.”

The nation’s No. 3 guard does have some connections with the university. A former Cathedral High School (Indianapolis) staff member now works in admissions at Alabama. Several of his former classmates at the high school now attend Alabama. Those students have told Ekiyor all about Tuscaloosa.

Though Tuscaloosa is much farther away from his home in Indiana, distance won’t be a factor in his final decision.

“The only factor is that I can’t visit those schools [Alabama and Florida State] as many times as I can with Michigan,” Ekiyor said. “That’s the only thing that is a problem, so distance wouldn’t deter me away from a school.”

Those three schools he mentioned are the only ones that he knows of right now that will receive an official visit this fall. Alabama and Florida State will have to fight a battle to bring Ekiyor on board, though.

Ekiyor’s mother is on board with his commitment to Michigan mainly because of the school’s academic prestige. Ekiyor is planning on majoring in communications when he gets to college.

“Michigan has a world-class education,” Ekiyor said. “It’s one of the best public schools in the country. That’s definitely important to my mom. When I committed, that was a big factor for why I chose there. You’re going to get a meaningful degree.”

One of those meaningful educational lessons the football team just partook in was a trip to Rome. Ekiyor said the Michigan staff kept him in the loop on the trip overseas. He was definitely impressed that the team had a chance to take part in that experience.

“They sent me some pictures of them with the pope,” Ekiyor said. “They told me that it was a life-changing experience. I guess you could say that it’s a pitch they’re using with recruits — how they’re getting to travel the world and seeing a bunch of different things.

“It’s definitely pretty cool. Going out of the country at that age is really cool. Getting to see some historic things that you probably wouldn’t be able to see otherwise is pretty cool.”

The state of Indiana’s No. 1 prospect will return to Ann Arbor, Mich., on June 16 for Michigan’s big man camp, just two weeks after his trip to Alabama. Ekiyor said he is planning to have his mind made up on his commitment after he takes all of his visits this summer and fall.

So, do the Crimson Tide have a chance to change his mind on his commitment to the Wolverines?

“I definitely think it’s possible,” Ekiyor said. “I don’t want to say anything else because I’m committed. I just want to explore everything this summer.”

Here's what Rizzy was talking about in regards to Tutt:

quote:

Quick note on Tide DB target

Earlier this week, I wrote that Christian Tutt, a 4-star cornerback from Thomson (Ga.) High School, was on commitment watch later this month when he makes his decision on May 30.

SEC Country was informed that Tutt will need to attend Alabama’s camp this summer to earn a committable offer. So, when he makes his decision on May 30 to honor his brother who was killed in a car accident last year, do not expect him to choose the Tide, unless there’s a big change over the next few weeks.

Tutt has a good relationship with Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, so it’s very possible he does end up in the Tide’s 2018 class, but it’s not likely he announces his commitment to the team this month.

He hasn't posted much since we got separate SEC boards. I know he moderates this one. Or at least used to.
